Hmmm.... What will this season be remembered as? I guess we'll find out in two weeks (and maybe after the bowl game as well...) . But the main theme for me at least has been the tragedy known as Wynn...
Y'know... I mainly agree with you. The roller coaster of it all has been this; you ask any Ute fan, BEFORE the start of the season, if he/she would be happy ending out 10-2 (yes, I am assuming Utah beats both SDSU and BYU - neither a sure thing...) and I think they would be ecstatic. As I remember it, expectations didn't really start boiling over until 4 to 5 games in. Then everyone started drinking the Kool Aid. I was there, I partook. But, this wasn't OUR YEAR at the outset. We were picked to finish 2nd to TCU - still a likely outcome - and somewhere in the middle of the top 25 (where we were prior to the ND debacle).
In the context of the MWC, Utah is still a good team. But for two bad losses, and some overly hyped rankings, the perception is different. Wynn has looked awful the last two games, for sure, but neither loss is squarely on him. Dumb penalties and turnovers have completely stalled any attempt to gain momentum. The special teams have been bad, the secondary looks like a high school JV squad, and the offense has been impotent. Turning the ball over on downs, in the red zone, twice in one game, is just excruciating. It's like a bad dream, in slow motion, and I can't wake up.
But I am still confident that the ship can be righted. A win at SDSU would be monumental to Utah now. They need some kind of confidence and momentum going into the BYU game, or they will be fighting an uphill battle. They still have something to play for, IMO.
The whole team, coaching staff included, needs to get their **** together.
