Quitting sucks

I've been a smoker for 14 years. I've probably been a two pack a day smoker for the better part of a decade. I went and got me an e-cig but it isn't the same. I haven't had a smoke in a day and half and I'm starting to get antsy.

Has anybody here quit?

I haven't ever smoked so I don't have any advice for you--but good luck! It's a killer addiction to break, but as I'm sure you realize your overall health will improve by leaps and bounds.

I applaud your efforts. Good luck. I never had to quit so all I could do would be to regurgitate what I have read, about identifying triggers beyond the physical craving for the nicotine, and replacing those triggers with alternatives to smoking to be proactive, like going for a quick walk in the morning rather than the morning cigarette, or changing up routines like what bar you go to after work or the ubiquitous gum chewing or twiddling a pencil to keep your hands occupied during your break period. I hope you get through it with minimal difficulty. I can tell you that cancer sucks, so anything you can do to minimize the risks is a good thing.

Thanks colton.

I feel like I'm hitting that age when I need to probably start thinking about retirement and being old or I won't achieve either.

Good luck. No experience with this sort of thing. Ain't got no advice except maybe eat some cake, pie, and ice cream to compensate.

I quit for several extended periods before finally giving it up for good about 7-8 years ago IIRC. Cold turkey is the only way to go IMO. Stay away from Las Vegas and Mexican resorts for at least 6 months or you'll relapse.

My father tried to quite several times over the years. He only managed to do so when the doctor told him he would be dead in 5 years if he kept smoking. That was 15 years ago. The scale of reward/punishment finally tipped when he heard that.

Find a way to make the rewards of not smoking better than the punishments of not smoking.

No good advice, just well wishes.

Kind of like the picture in your signature? That is one cold turkey right now.

Damn 2 packs a day?!

Ive never smoked but I heard exercise/working out helps. The one friend that I knew quit smoking became obsessed with being healthy. So in my limited opinion I think you need to become just as obsessed with something other than smoking. So being overall obsessed with being healthy will give you a focus and drive to not smoke. Rather than just having a goal not to smoke.

Good luck.

Good luck to you. I had a friend who took the money he would spend on smokes and put it in a box. Having the visual of what he was saving really helped him quit. The thought of not spending $12-15 per day on a couple of packs would be enough for me to make a concerted effort.

You in your late 30's like me?

Maybe try carrying some toothpicks with ya.
They can help with the physical habit of putting something in your mouth (insert joke here)

As far as the physical addition...... just smoke crack or meth whenever you feel like smoking something.

Only thing harder than quitting smoking is starting flossing

That actually sounds like a good idea. thanks

I use the e-cig and I'm going to ween myself down. They have different nicotine levels. The highest level(which is what I have) doesn't replace actually smoking, though. So maybe I'll get some crack too:p

Best of luck to you - I've never smoked but as an incentive to not start up again, I can tell you when you did smoke it probably bothered your loved ones more than they let on.

I just found out my nephew took up smoking and it pisses me off me more than I thought it would - and I don't even like the ****er all that much.

I'm really interested in how you feel through this process. I never felt like I had a nicotine addiction as much as a habitual system, at least not a physical addiction like other smokers I've known have claimed. I liked the sensation of inhaling and exhaling, which is why the whole full strength to medium to light to ultra-light isn't effective. You get to ultra-lights and you start cutting the damn filters in half because to get anything you have to suck on it harder than a whore trying to suck the bed sheets up through your *******.

I don't think you'd have that problem with the e-cig as the sensation stays the same regardless of nicotine levels? If that's the case then get used to the e-cig first (I hear that takes time) and then weaning the nic shouldn't matter nearly as much. If you get to zero then why care if you're addicted to inhaling chemical free, flavored water vapor.

I've had co-workers who have tried repeatedly. One thing they mention is to stay away from others when they're smoking. They had to move away from them, tell them to stay away, not ask to go on a smoke break with them. Just get distance from the temptation. They all say it's hardest thing they've done, but well worth it.

Best of luck.
