What's new

Racism and privilege

The only thing I've confirmed or denied, directly, are the initials, because you were inaccurate. Of course everyone knows my first name, it's been used around here for *years*, going back to when I suggested it to another poster. As for my last name, that's also publicly available to anyone with half a brain that want to click on a couple of links, and again, it's been available for *years*.

I don't use "One Brow" because I'm worried about my identity. It's a nickname I picked up in college, and I use it like a stage name or nom-de-plume. You might as well be calling Nicholas Coppola a liar when he uses a different name in an interview.

Well, for those without 'half a brain', I'm glad I provided them this wonderful service of knowing your identity :)

That long? What type of silly slacker are you? You should have had it in under 5 seconds.

Lmao. Dude. The last thing I will pride myself over, is how quickly I can do this sort of thing. I srsly do not give two ****s as to how quick this sort of thing takes. I'm not trying to be some big-shot hacker. I have for too many other things to pride myself on, than to prove my 'talents' to a Utah-based web-forum. I wonder if the same can be said about you.

Of course, that I've already said on this forum that I work in the IT department, with databases, for a local hospital and the health clinics that own it, that I teach math evenings and weekends at the local community college (my resume is online, for crying out load), and I've talked extensively about religious background in the past, as well. You must be the most unimpressive net detective ever. You should pay other people to do this stuff, so you can get better at it.

Umm no, because I truly dgaf. Please refer to post above. It's absolutely hilarious reading you trying to insult me, because I genuinely do not care. Please keep trying. It's entertaining me. Seriously. Feel like I'm the 50 year old talking to the 20 year old right now.

Feel free to post any detail you want. I don't care, and it won't bother me or change my life in any way. The best possible outcome for you is that people won't assume you're a jerk for posting this information for no particular reason outside of showing off. No way for me to lose, or you to win, in that exchange. However, don't let me dissuade you.

Nope, the original purpose (figuring out your skin-colour) was served. The rest was primarily self-enjoyment, which has been fulfilled. Don't see any reason to press further.

BTW, IIRC, you're Muslim, so really you have no cause to laugh at JW theology. Yours is equally stupid.

Oh, did I hurt your feelings? D'awww. Sorry Eric.

Maybe if you didn't get so emotional, you would realize that my initial post made zero reference as to what I think about JW doctrine. In fact, I am well-acquainted with an individual who is JW, and I admire him in many regards. Rather, my laughter stemming from your JW days, refers to how far-fetched it seems given your present 'One Brow' persona.

But please, continue to turn this thread into one that involves personal attacks. I think I was being generous when I regarded your behaviour as that of one of a 20 year old.

What squirming? You confuse bemusement for fear. Post anything you want, I won't be bothered to confirm or deny anything unless it amuses me. Why would I care? Why do you think I need to "own up" to anything?

Gosh, I guess you're correct. write4u was trying to use my meatspace identity to alter my behavior. Nothing like that going on here. I'm sure you have some noble purpose in made for posting the information. Do tell us what it is along the way, if you can. That explanation is where we'll see the real squirming.

Please refer to my post above. Cheers.

You helped someone find me, although I'd not usually describe that person as brainless.

Lmao. Dude. The last thing I will pride myself over, is how quickly I can do this sort of thing.

Then why mention it?

Oh, did I hurt your feelings? D'awww. Sorry Eric.

No, but I am embarrassed at times that I fell for that JW stuff, and I reacted defensively. One more thing to work on.

Rather, my laughter stemming from your JW days, refers to how far-fetched it seems given your present 'One Brow' persona.

Well, people change over the course of 15-20 years.

For me, the big change was in learning not to confuse sincerity with accuracy. I was very late in realizing that the most sincere, earnest, and confident people are usually wrong (because you can only learn when you are not sure that you know enough}. If you're not sincere, confident, and earnest, it's hard to stay a JW for very long.

But please, continue to turn this thread into one that involves personal attacks.

I apologize for my own embarrassment interfering with my understanding of your comment. I'll try to improve on that subject.

Mostly out of surprise as to how easy it was.

I accept your apology.

I hope this thread is dead. It keeps coming back like an evil twin on a soap opera. I think just maybe dalamon has put it out of it's misery.

Funny, I was just thinking now it could return to its original topic, since your tangent is over.

How so? You're white and as such are unqualified to talk about minorities feelings concerning race. Anything you post is white privilege and should be disregarded as such.

I don't talk about minority feelings, except in response to other posters. I'm talking about cognitive shortcuts and the way the human brain works, the result of which is racism. I'm also talking about white privlege, which (if I'm white) I understand a lot better than you because I experience it as well as read about it.

However, I don't expect you to see the difference between these subjects, because then you would have to honestly address your own privlege, and you frankly don't want to.

Mods please change thread title to White GuiltThanx

Wow, it must be so comforting for you to be able to put this conversation in a box. That's part of the point that dalamon wasn't informed enough to understand. When you couldn't put a box around my words (either "white guilt" or "black anger", as long as you have a box), you have to actually deal with the words.

Of course, my race doesn't matter, as long as you know, so you know why you are ignoring what I'm saying.

By the way, thanks for the reply to post #537. It's so obvious how committed you are to social justice (as long as it's done in a way that doesn't make you uncomfortable).

Thank your this teaching point. I believe you said exactly what you thought your motivations were. You are completely wrong, of course, because there are several phrases you used thourghout this exchange that made it clear you were trying to toy with me like a cat does a mouse (let me know if you need a list). However, it's very human to assign benign motivations to yourself after you act.

This is also a part of the problem of living in a racist culture, but not being/wanting to be bigoted. We see a black guy walking down the street, and his race plays a part in our immediate threat assessment. However, we know we're not "like that", we don't hate black people. So, we find other justifications for our feeling threatened (a hoodie, a "swagger", torn jeans, etc.) that we would not use on a white guy.

This is why black people are more likely to have their cars searched at traffic stops, even though whites are a little more like to have illegal drugs on their person. This is why in psychological experiments where individuals set prices for exchanges, blacks have to pay higher prices. This is why I keep hammering on the point that we can't trust our first instincts and first judgments, because however unbigoted we are, being raised in a racist culture has perverted those instincts and first judgments.

You put it in a box. I was more than willing to have a conversation with you about race, but you don't want to have a conversation. You prefer to dictate and have others listen. When you hear an argument you disagree with you attack the poster. You question their experiences instead of their points.

Bold is what you have done repeatedly throughout this thread. It is wrong and that is the point of the last few pages. Do unto others eh

Even the waning criticism that One Brow tried to sneak in, has been effectively disassembled.

Thus ends my lecture on "How to Dairy-Queen One Brow" 101. Class, if you have any other questions, please visit me during my office hours. It has been an absolute pleasure, and I hope to see some of you around campus.

God's speed.

You put it in a box. I was more than willing to have a conversation with you about race, but you don't want to have a conversation.

It's a wide-open thread. You came in telling me what I should be saying/how I sahould be saying things (even though you keep accusing me of saying things I haven't said). You just spent pages diverting the topic to what my race. What's stopping you from contributing something you think is meaningful on the subject?

When you hear an argument you disagree with you attack the poster.

1) I haven't attacked a single poster, nor will I. It's not my style. I expect you to keep repeating that falsehood, but that won't make it any more true.
2) I'm still waiting to hear an argument. I'm hearing a lot of tone-trolling, a lot of denial of things I haven't been accusing people of, a lot of diversions, but very little argument. Do you have an argument relevant to any of the points I'm trying to make?

You question their experiences instead of their points.

What's your point, then? Bring it out, instead of worrying about how I say things.

Even the waning criticism that One Brow tried to sneak in, has been effectively disassembled.

As I said, I understand completely why you can't be honest with yourself about your own motivations. However, a brush-off after the exhange doesn't alter the content of the exchange. It's your words that reveal your motivations, not anything I have said. Again, let me know if you need a list.

You don't address the points that posters make. You question their ability to be rational instead.

let me give it a go

It is like I am speaking directly with your ego. You seem to be more concerned with preserving a deeply held feeling of your own logically infallibility than actually trying to discover the truth.
