@dala's "friend"
I agree that the NCAA is nothing but an unfunny joke of an institution. Much of what was said in the rant is true.
Not to mention there are much more recent examples of even more blatant abuse than those instances you cited.
Calipari (just an example) has been lobbying for years now to get the NCAA to allow universities to compensate players a stipend of around $100/week (actually less) so these kids have money to take a gf on a date, get the brakes fixed on their clunker.. whatever. Yes, the kids are abused, financially.
Having said that, every year, thousands of kids not good enough to go pro get scholarships and degrees their families could not have otherwise afforded. Those same kids get to also be BMOC for four years while earning that degree. MANY have a huge leg up when applying for a job just because of the cache they carry for having played for 'my' team (every team has tons of business-owning fans).
It needs revamped. There should be a fair and equitable way for kids WANTING an education to be able to afford to also play a 'money sport.'
If Calipari is correct though, that day will not come until the blue-blood universities say enough's enough and leave the NCAA and form, anew, a much better structured entity that better represents the interests of all involved..... rather than just itself.
