Kind of a steep price. I didn't see the system specs or if it can accept standard video card upgrades or whatnot.

I sort of like the idea of these steam machines but I'd like to see a bare-bones system that I can add my own equipment to unless they can get me something very powerful for an exceptionally good price.

Yeah it's good to see though. There have only been a couple prototypes and they already are showing imagination and options. I've been looking to build a new pc but I will probably wait for steam os. If I like it then I can save some money avoiding windows. From what I hear Steam os should reduce the hardware requirements for pc gaming.

still rather build my own custom pc for gaming

The only exception for me would be if they can offer a very good value for performance. If I could slap together a system that meets their specs for close to the same price then it's not for me. But I'm happy if it helps bring more people into PC gaming.

The first one is supposed to retail at $500 and comes with a controller and all the free games on steam. That's competitive with the consoles and since it's a pc it's also upgradeable.

You have to have a 500GB or larger hard drive? I use SSDs and they are not bigger than 500GB.

I wanted to do a build when they released the beta. I will probably have to skip an ssd for now and go with a traditional hdd because yeah an ssd at 500gb would be expensive.

I use a smaller SSD for the OS, game and other program files and a local RAID for mass storage. No need for a huge SSD as it gets you no real gain on simple data storage, unless you plan on having 200 games on your computer. For the dozen or so most people will have 256 gb SSD is fine.

tbh I will probably wait at least until January. Valve is supposedly going to release more details then. If it looks like they are going to release some units at comparable prices(maybe some steam credit) then I wouldn't bother with a build right now.

I just play steam games from my PC. Not a big fan of consoles anyway, mostly due to the fact that nerve damage in my left hand makes it very hard to use the controllers properly. Although porting in a keyboard and mouse into the xbox 360 I can kick *** at COD and others. I think the fact that microsoft says that using a keyboard and mouse is grounds to have your account suspended shows they know that the keyboard mouse setup is more effective than their controllers.

I can't imagine playing a FPS without a mouse and keyboard. Mostly the mouse for aiming. I've never played one a PS or Xbox, so I really don't know how it is to use a thumb-stick or d-pad, but it seems way lame to me.

To me it is hugely lame. My son and his friends play a lot of COD on xbox, and I wanted to play along. Most FPS's I play I maintain between a 1.5 and 2.5 kdr fairly easily, and that is even in competitive play, and that is pretty solid. So in online games I kick their butts all over the place. So when I started playing with them on the xbox they were thrilled that now I could barely maintain a 1.0 kdr, if that, and they always "owned" me. Then we figured out how to attach a keyboard and mouse. All of a sudden I am back to a 2.0 kdr and they couldn't figure out what happened, and it cracked me and my son up how frustrated they would get. So we were playing on xbox live against other people, outside of the normal group, and someone reported me for hacking to Microsoft. Microsoft suspended my account. I filed a ticket to be reinstated, and told them I simply shifted from using their controller to using a keyboard/mouse combo. They replied that it is against the TOS to use a keyboard and constitutes an unfair advantage and that it is grounds for having the account permanently banned. After much back and forth I got them to reinstate my account, but I am on some kind of "watch list" now. Too funny. Obviously they know their controller sucks, but as long as everyone is using the sucky controller then it is all ok.
