damn! And here I thought it was some new HVAC gadget.
Kind of a steep price. I didn't see the system specs or if it can accept standard video card upgrades or whatnot.
I sort of like the idea of these steam machines but I'd like to see a bare-bones system that I can add my own equipment to unless they can get me something very powerful for an exceptionally good price.
still rather build my own custom pc for gaming
The only exception for me would be if they can offer a very good value for performance. If I could slap together a system that meets their specs for close to the same price then it's not for me. But I'm happy if it helps bring more people into PC gaming.

You have to have a 500GB or larger hard drive? I use SSDs and they are not bigger than 500GB.
I wanted to do a build when they released the beta. I will probably have to skip an ssd for now and go with a traditional hdd because yeah an ssd at 500gb would be expensive.
I use a smaller SSD for the OS, game and other program files and a local RAID for mass storage. No need for a huge SSD as it gets you no real gain on simple data storage, unless you plan on having 200 games on your computer. For the dozen or so most people will have 256 gb SSD is fine.
Why the hell do they require it, though?
I just play steam games from my PC. Not a big fan of consoles anyway, mostly due to the fact that nerve damage in my left hand makes it very hard to use the controllers properly. Although porting in a keyboard and mouse into the xbox 360 I can kick *** at COD and others. I think the fact that microsoft says that using a keyboard and mouse is grounds to have your account suspended shows they know that the keyboard mouse setup is more effective than their controllers.
I can't imagine playing a FPS without a mouse and keyboard. Mostly the mouse for aiming. I've never played one a PS or Xbox, so I really don't know how it is to use a thumb-stick or d-pad, but it seems way lame to me.
