Toning is b.s. There is muscle & there is fat covering said muscle. If you want to look better, you need to increase the former & decrease the latter.
The best beginner's workout you can do to become stronger and, consequently, look better is Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength. Follow that program until you have to reset the weights three times. When that happens, move onto either Rippetoe's Texas Method or Wendler's 5-3-1. I personally prefer 5-3-1.
As for diet, figure out much you want to weigh. Then, use a site to determine how many calories per day you need to eat to maintain that weight given your activity level. Eat this many calories daily & eat one gram of protein per bodyweight.
If you do all of the above, you will be healthier, stronger, more athletic and look better.
