The Thriller

So lately I've been wanting to workout hard to tone my muscles a lot more. So I turn to those of you with infinite wisdom on this subject here on jazzfanz. Any books or workouts on toning your body and working the core would be well appreciated.

Thriller, I can completely vouch for P90X. I have never used it but I have more than a few friends that have and if you stick to it and have the dedication, the results are nothing short of amazing.

Buy a mat, free weights, push up bars, and a pull up bar. Then put in P90X into your DVD player. Then finish with a protein drink.

I always thought the general theory on toning, at least when it comes to weightlifiting, is that you go for a lot of reps/sets with lighter weights.

Toning is b.s. There is muscle & there is fat covering said muscle. If you want to look better, you need to increase the former & decrease the latter.

The best beginner's workout you can do to become stronger and, consequently, look better is Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength. Follow that program until you have to reset the weights three times. When that happens, move onto either Rippetoe's Texas Method or Wendler's 5-3-1. I personally prefer 5-3-1.

As for diet, figure out much you want to weigh. Then, use a site to determine how many calories per day you need to eat to maintain that weight given your activity level. Eat this many calories daily & eat one gram of protein per bodyweight.

If you do all of the above, you will be healthier, stronger, more athletic and look better.
