Sign-and-Trade idea with Hayward to Indiana

Hayward doesn't want to re-sign with the Jazz?

I have an idea, trade him in the off-season.

Jazz sign Gordon Hayward to a 4-year $40-48 mil deal

Pacers sign Lance Stephenson to a 4-year $28-36 mil deal

Jazz trade Hayward to the Pacers for Stephenson, future picks, and/or cash.

Hayward is averaging 16.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.9 APG, and 1.3 SPG in 36 minutes per game.

Stephenson is averaging 13.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.2 APG, and 1 SPG in 34 minutes per game.

Stephenson is leading the league in triple-doubles with (3) and he has played 29 games so far.

Hayward can play the two for the Pacers.

Jazz Starting Line-Up 2014/15 season:

PG Trey Burke
SG Lance Stephenson
SF Jabari Parker
PF Derrick Favors
C Enes Kanter

6th man: Alec Burks
7th man: GSW Pick

It's a win-win trade for both teams.

So the answer to how the Pacers pay to keep Stephenson is to actually trade him for a player that will make more money and isn't better?

Best thread in a while tbh

The Pacers cannot afford Hayward or Stephenson. They will be near 66 million going into next year with several roster spots needing to be filled. This year, while they have Stephenson and Granger, will be their best bet at winning a title.

The more and more I watch Hayward, I think the team that would be the best fit for him would be a team that runs more like Phoenix. Hayward really isn't a halfcourt player. His strengths are in the open court. When Hayward is on the break with the ball in his hands he is deadly. (likewise, when Hayward is defending the opponent's fast break, he's one of the best) But in a half court slow paced game, he can't create his own shot well, turns the ball over at a high rate, doesn't have a reliable outside shot, and his half court D isn't that great. I could easily see him flourishing on a team like Phoenix (averaging more points per game and shooting a higher percentage) in a more run and gun type offense. I don't think Indiana really has a need for a player like Hayward when they already have one of the best wings in the game.

I do like Stephenson though...he can do everything Hayward does plus he's a better defender. The big question is how much does Stephenson expect to be paid? If he wants max money, forget it.

And he acts like he is an eighth grader... So immature.

On the flip side, wouldn't it be just as easy to keep him and hire a coach that runs more? I think Favors, Hayward, Burks and Burke would all do well in a faster paced offense. Imagine if they could land Parker or Wiggins and run with that group. That would be fun to watch.

Like how? Does he play a lot of video games?

No, he has a bad attitude. Just kind of fits the jr smith mold in my opinion. Just the fact he is asking for max after one decent year bugs me too.

I don't know a ton about him though. From what I have watched though, he has been making smart decisions on the court this year. Good passes and stuff, plays defense. Just read some stuff about him being immature.

I'd love to have a coach that was dedicated to running more...but unfortunately, I think we're stuck the Corbin for the long haul. But yes, I agree the entire team would be better suited for a fast paced offense (maybe not Kanter though).

I live in the Indy area and Stephenson is hoping for Max Money.
According to this website, NBA execs are saying Stephenson would command a yearly salary in the $7-9M range. That would be an unbelievable bargain. I'd pay $9M/yr to Stephenson instead of $12-15M for Hayward...IN A HEARTBEAT.

To the salary cap gurus out there...What is the max a player drafted in the 2nd round (in 2010) can sign for anyways?

It won't be determined until the NBA sets the 2014 salary cap in June/July. The round drafted has no bearing on it.

Why?
Why would the Pacers pay 3 more million a year for a worse player?

he'd be an amazing player for the Pacers. Infact he fits them better then he does with the jazz. He would rack up the assists on that team as they already don't have a traditional pg, and the Pacers don't need to rely on him to score. They can just play him to his strengths, and I think his shot would miraculously come back.

I really wish the Jazz could do that too, because I agree with you completely. I personally have no interest in trading Hayward or not matching his contract. No matter what he gets offered, it won't be as much as it would have been had he played better this season. They'll still be adding two new young players to fit into the rotation, and hopefully a new coach with a different offensive philosophy than what they currently have. Gotta think that DL will want his "own guy" moving forward after this train wreck of a season.

You cannot trade him in the offseason. He is a RFA. Also him not wanting to stay in Utah is baseless.

This idea is remarkable in that neither team has a real incentive to do this (especially the Pacers, for whom this makes absolutely 0 sense).
