The OFFICIAL don't draft Joel Embiid thread

But the discussion of 7 footers being rare was in response to BLine....not you.

Ok Beandip, lets put this argument to rest once and for all. Let's be generous and say that there are 45 players in the NBA over 7'(this is being generous, as every reference I could find said there are not over 40 players that tall). That means that out of the 450 or so players that play in the NBA, there are 10% or less of them are over 7' tall. In this draft, the players that will go in the first round and are over 7' tall are Joel Embiid and Willie Cauley-Stein. So out of 30 players in the first round, there are 2 that are over 7' tall.

So less than 10% of the league is over 7' tall, yet up to 20% of the league plays the center position, where being tall basically gets you a job. In my book, that is rare.

Even more rare are athletic 7 footers. Embiid is an athletic 7 footer. Even more rare than an athletic 7 footer is a guy who is 7', athletic, and has a feel for the game more than 2 feet from the basket.

So are 7 footers in the NBA rare? Absolutely they are. But 7 footers in the NBA with actual talent and ability beyond dunks and blocks are extremely rare.

Its not rare. Any team can go get a 7 footer whenever they want. Again every team probably has a 7 footer on their roster. Being rare would be if only a few teams had 7 footers and they were hard to come by.....or they were coveted in some way. But just being 7 feet tall means absolutely nothing.

Again look at 2012. Out of the 4....7 footers that were drafted in the first round all but 1 sucks balls. So that year... 75% of the first round 7 footers were busts. So again just being 7 feet tall has no effect on your success in the NBA.

Im just glad that we finally have someone on jazz fanz that can predict players whole careers after one season in the nba

This thread is such a train wreck that it's hilarious. I love it when you guys organize these plays in the UGLI forum.

You will be hard pressed to find a draft where the majority of the 7 footers were not busts. I know there are a few out there (2008 I believe is one) but they are rare. The majority of 7 foot players don't pan out.

Just sayin.... dont call players from 2012 busts yet.

Tyson chandler was a bust.... until he wasnt

You can still call him a bust technically. His career stats are subpar and he is a nice role player at best. Not great for the #2 pick.

9 points, 9 rebounds and 1 block a game doesn't scream amazing. But yes his career did get better.

-He actually only 7 ft. There are plenty of 7 footers in the league. Very tall would be someone like Yao, Thabeet, Gobert...etc

-He's only played the game of basketball for a couple of years

-He's only played competitive ball for what 6 months?

-Yes he has shown improvement but he's not dominating enough to select him over Parker and Wiggins.....in my opinion.

People are really getting that pissed off because I'm saying he's risky and would should take Parker and Wiggins before Embiid?

Give me a friggin break.

If Embiid busts I'm going to laugh my *** off. You guys are all acting like he's Wilt Chamberlain.

You're acting like Wiggins and Parker are sure things. Besides your argument sucked. He is tall and African so he has more of a chance to bust. Yes his inexperience is an issue but if you've watch him progress in the last six months you wouldn't be comparing him to African players who busted. The difference between all four top guys is extremely small. It just depends on what you see in the player and what your team needs are.

So can we laugh at you if Parker or Wiggins turn out to be busts or not as good as hyped. How about if Parker decides to go on a mission, the Jazz still draft him and then when he comes back he sucks or does't have the love for basketball anyone.

Both of these guys have farther to fall than does Embiid. No one knows who is going to be great or bust but it isn't as big a stretch to pick Embiid over the other two as you make it out to be. That is why people are jumping on you.

You're misunderstanding me.

A) I think player comparisons (ie saying this player is going to be like THIS player) are inherently flawed, and rarely insightful
B) in my opinion, Olajuwon is the best Center of all-time. Not once have I said Embiid will be as good as him, nor will I ever until he is several years into his NBA career

The reason I even bring up Olajuwon, is twofold:

1) he is a perfect example of a big-man, like Embiid, who showed promise on both ends of the court in his first CONTRIBUTING year of college basketball, despite overcoming adversity strangely similar to Embiid's.
2) he is a perfect example of why premiums should be placed on bigmen that can pass, score, and play defense-- making them worthy of first overall picks even when the likes of Michael Jordan are in the draft.

I said nothing about Roy Hibbert-- in fact, Roy is one of my favourite players in the NBA. The problem with that comparison, though, is that they are truly nothing alike. Watching games of Embiid would make you realize this. Why would you make Embiid's ceiling a player he does not really have that much in common with?

Hakeem is NOT the best center of all time. Either Wilt chamberlain or Jabbar were. Personally I think Wilt is the best of all-time.

Then go through the posts, and indicate what you consider to be the mindless, group-think 'drivel' of the UGLIforum.

Hopefully you have the understanding that cases can be made for all 3 (Did Kareem ever win w/o Magic or the Big O? How come Wilt couldn't almost ever beat Russell?)

There have only been 27 7'0"-7'1" players measured at the draft combine. Of these, only two were taken in the lottory (Shaquille and Bargnani).

Of the two lottory picks, one was taken in what was considered a crappy draft and the other is a hall of famer. The numbers prove that if you take a 7-7'1"er in a strong draft you are guaranteed a hall of famer.
