Why? Does it weaken your case too much to acknowledge that similar arguments have been used about various musical genres over the years? Do you give any credence to the notion that Iron Maiden was a corrupting influence, as opposed to a response and an attempt to make money? If not, why is it different for certain types of rap?
They are selling what people want to hear. The people who want to hear it will get it from some source. You might as well blame the makers of pornographic films for reinforcing the notion that sex is pleasurable.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but my assumption has been that you don't consider any of them corrosive.
You are correct. I meant for it to be much more generic than just the lyrics, but perhaps it came out poorly. I think my intended point (that the desire of the audience drives the package, not the other way around, still stands.

....."world of difference?" It's true that Mushnick is a Jew and so is Sterling......so he's certainly going to side with and sick up for Sterling even to a fault. However, I think his analysis is spot on when it comes to the "hypocrisy" of the NBA and there overall reaction! Obviously, you don't want an owner to publicly express his disdain for black players/people in a league dominate by such. But his expression was certainly less public than what the rapper puke spews out PUBLICLY every time he cuts a CD or has a concert! (do rappers have "concerts?") Today's NBA not only caters to the rappers.....they encourage what they represent in a public forum that has put young impressionable teens on a pathway to destruction and ruin!

I'm working my way through this thread, and I've seen 'free speech' come up a few times now. So it's worth restating what has been stated already numerous times elsewhere for this issue and for countless other issues preceding it.
"Free speech" in the US context means freedom from Government/state restriction/coercion/punishment etc. of speech. It DOES NOT protect one from the social or economic consequences of speech, such as social sanction or sponsors pulling their money out. Can we please, please all acknowledge this and dispense with free speech complaints, which clearly do not apply in this case?
Like others, I am quite troubled by this violation of privacy. I do agree with laws that protect people's privacy by prohibiting unapproved recording of private conversations (though I would relax the law for whistleblowers if feasible). With that said (and this might be addressed in later replies), it appears that Sterling knew, approved, and even requested that his private conversations be recorded, although this doesn't excuse selling those conversations to a sleazy operator like TMZ. Also, the recording is out there in the public domain, so even IF we disapprove of how it got there, we cannot ignore it.
Yes, Sterling is a creep and a racist, and sponsors, players, coaches, NBA Execs undoubtedly knew of his past and overlooked it, because it was good for business. Yes, there is a good deal of hypocrisy here. This, however, simply cannot be ignored. It is so blatant, so 'out there' that there is no choice but to act on it.
While I would like to see that people are held responsible for deeds as well as words, any notion that words don't matter is hopelessly naive or willfully ignorant.
However we got to this point, I'm glad we are there. Sterling should have been outed and ousted years ago. It's the comeuppance he has long deserved, so I won't shed tears for him (though I do worry about the ever encroaching loss of privacy in today's social media world).
Finally, I am disappointed (but not surprised) at the number of Sterling apologists here. How this info came to light is, I believe, a very legit concern, but in sticking up for Sterling is a poorly chosen and ultimately losing cause.

I only wanted to point out, at least what I've gathered, is that nobody is actually sticking up for Sterling but concerned about what is seen as private conversations being made public and being forced to sell the team because of what was said in addition to the fines and ban. ( I could be wrong, I haven't read all posts.)
After hearing he gave permission for the recordings for whatever reason I'm not really worried about that a whole lot even though I still think the recordings were intended for personal use to help him remember stuff.
The forcing of him to sell the team was a big question mark and concern, but if the NBA has people sign contracts and they can support the breach of contract legitimately in this case then that's fine too. Like it or not what you say can negatively impact the association and the team. It's possible the NBA has wanted a reason to get rid of him for a while and when the opportunity presented itself they jumped on it. They did seem to act quickly and know in advance what to do.

Again, there's a lot of difference between a owner and a player. Owners can and should take all of those factors into account when deciding whether or not to sign a player. On the other hand, players who are drafted CANNOT take anything into account when "selecting" their owner. Therefore an owner has a much higher standard to maintain, in my opinion.

fact: sterling di not physically harm any human being. he endagnered no-one. he just hurt some feelings.
another fact: half of those (convicted/suspected) players actually HURT and TRAUMATIZED real people, the other half of those players brought real people in real physical or evan mortal danger.
