Best asset is cap space. We just got Hood this year basically for it didn't we?

This.

I don't know why some of you are panicking here. Hood and Burks could easily start next year and I doubt any of us would notice Hayward's absence.

We're vastly overrating Hayward folks. It's unbelievable. Parsons is a better player. Ariza is a better player. Neither come close to deserving the max.

Didn't you see how easy it was to move AK47? Teams love overpaid and underproducing players... Oh wait....

Healthy AK would have been moveable... Hayward doesn't have those concerns.

@LullOnSports: Paying a 3rd option on offense 15 mil/yr isn't ideal, but Wiggins playing on rookie contract for entirety of Hayward deal washes it out.

do it cavs

i want to see some real basketball next season under blatt

Rudy Gay got traded twice with an unmoveable contract. Hayward is a player that fits on almost any team... Gay is an isolation player. In a year you could trade him for expirings if we need flexibility.

Gay is better.

And by all means, let's use Memphis, Sactown, and Toronto as models to follow..

If we can get that again then great, but we got that last year... this year's market is different. If a team wants to dump salary they have a ton of options... As of right now either Chicago or Houston, if Anthony decides to leave NY, will need to dump salary... no other teams need to dump salary.

We have an Oh-Folks moment from O Gatino!

More cowbell please

Can someone please name the last marquee free agent we signed? Boozer and Okur are the only guys I can think of... Gasol, Durant, Lebron ain't walking through that door.

We're not just talking about this year, we're looking at being flexible for the duration of Hayward's Max deal.

I lazy googled it.. Phoenix didn't take back salary so Atlanta would have had to be under the cap. In other news Boris Diaw used to be skinny.... skinny Boris Diaw would be scary. Link to skinny diaw below

https://www.nba.com/suns/news/johnson_traded_050819.html
They took back Diaw, but he made just over $1mm and could have been moved easily regardless. If the Cavs want Gordo that badly, maybe they can package him other players/picks for an upgrade elsewhere. Revisit the rumored draft trade: Hayward, Favors/Kanter and picks for Wiggins.

Huh?

So blow our greatest asset, cap flexibility, because the top players won't sign here?

This doesn't even make philosophical sense let alone nba sense.

So what if we aren't able to sign a "top player" his summer? Plenty of other fish, parsons, ariza, etc. what about next summer? The one after? Plus all the potential deals that could happen during the season...

There's just no reason to match this.

If cavs sign Gordo to max:

S&T For Wiggins.

OR

Call Parsons up and offer him 12 mill a year. He signs and it's over

Yet.

But you don't take that risk. You have yet to provide 1 reason to match this.

I'm waiting
We could still take on a salary dump deal even with Hayward, so that reason sucks. There aren't going to be two salary dumps this summer.

If we don't match hayward we will sign guys to get us to the floor anyway... if you want to sign those guys to one year deals that is awesome... have fun, but they won't be a better trade asset than Hayward.

I am saying that in a year if it isn't working the Jazz could trade Hayward for a first round pick or two... and I don't think it would be hard. If we can sign and trade him for something good we can try that route now... I'd be fine with that. If you let him walk for nothing though you will be left with nothing... remember we can do the salary dump deal still. We have a ton of cap space and likely won't get best value for it... If we can't sign and trade him for something good matching is the second best option...

Also, Ariza is 29 and isn't nearly as good as Hayward... stop with that nonsense. Parson is close but he is also restricted.

Whoops... So G-time's agent did a good job. Is 4/65 that much more damaging than 4/52? I see the Jazz matching this and Jazzfanz melting.

It was said the Jazz topped out at 4/48. Cavs offer is about 35% larger than Jazz offer. I'm praying that whole "we'll match any offer" was just BS to try to keep his market value down.

How valuable is cap space if no one wants to come here. We have a 30 year history of failure in bringing free agents here, but next year is the year I'm sure. If we can get parsons at 12 great... but it isn't that easy. He is restricted, unless they get Carmelo he isn't going anywhere.

Also none of those cap space deals materialized last year... Philly ended up getting 2nds for their extra space... awesome!

I believe an overpaid Hayward is a better asset than cap space we can't use... its not that hard to understand. If you don't agree that is fine.
