Jazz acquire Novak from Raptors

If you can find me these 2-way players in this FA economy, and then put together deals that would bring them to Utah, then I'll be really impressed.
Don't see them this year. So should we spend just to spend? That's the model of the Pistons, Knicks, etc.

We already have 8/9 players who need playing time (and I'm assuming Jazz match for Hayward): Exum, Burke, Burks, Hayward, Favors and Kanter should all get 30+. Add in Gobert and Hood a 20 each. That's 220 out of 240 mins. Jazz have 20 left for some combination of Evans, Tomic?, Novak, Murphy, etc.

Better to have cap space open for a deadline deal when teams look to rebuild and dump decent players. Then we have room AND assets to offer.

Spot on. Great post.

Danny Ainge just got a first round pick for taking on 3.2 mil of contracts of young players from Cavs. If anyone was doubting how stupid of a move it was for DL to take on 7.2 mil non expiring contract of an overpaid scrub for just a second round pick, here is an example of what half of that money and cap room can buy in today's market.

Just disappointing to see DL waste an opportunity to get first round pick and give up double for a second rounder.

It's all about the why, the reason, Cavs and CHI are pressured and highly motivated so they could sign LBJ and Pau Gasol. Toronto wasn't signing any big names and didn't really need to trim the money as badly.

I'm still not convinced about this acquiring....we could take Dante Cunningham in free agency instead of trading for Novak! Dante Cunningham is a stretch 4, athletic with a consistent mid-range jump shot!

I heard the Heat still haven't officially signed Josh McRoberts, not going to happen but would be nice if the Jazz good nab him.

You are exactly right. Then why in the world did DL not deal with teams which need the relief more and are willing to pay more for it? 7.2 mil is not chump change. Yet another example of how other teams used about a quarter of that amount to get double what we got. Also a big factor is the fact Novak wasn't even on expiring contract. That means he will count against the cap almost 4 mil next year when Burks and Kanter will get bigger contracts. This move was not a minor mistake by DL, but rather fundamental error taking up valuable cap space this and next year for a very small return.

Dunno why stuff like this still baffles me, but it does.

Very Nice! /borat voice

I think DL really liked Novak's vetness. When he got traded a lot of his teammates were super bummed. We need his presence with having such a young team.

I think there's a high likelihood that the Jazz actually wanted Novak. This move doesn't smell like a cap dump to me. As such, getting someone to give you an asset for a player you want is a good move.

Well that too, I just think he made more sense with being such a good locker room guy too.

How many more 2nd round picks do we freakin' need? We have 7+ coming in the next few years in addition to all of our own. Are you really going to pitch a fit because we don't have 8? Unless you are proponent of my plan to eventually get ALL of the second round picks in one draft. Then Rage On!

I could be wrong, but over the next three seasons (2015, 2016 and 2017) the Jazz have four 1st round picks and seven 2nd round picks. They're stacked in terms if assets, they have eight quality young players under contact, they have all of their young guys in favorable contract situations, plus they're flush with cap space to make big moves if available. If Exum is the super-stud #1 option guy that they've needed, then the Jazz won't be bad for long.

7.2 mil multiple year deal is worth at least a first rounder, not second. Boston just got one for half the price. How many extra first round picks in addition to our own are coming our way that we would ignore opportunities to get first rounder and instead get some 10 mpg scrub because he is a good locker room presence?

WE lost Jefferson and Williams. They were, by what we've heard, good veterans in the locker room. I think DL really wanted someone to be another steadying presence. Novak was NOT just a salary dump. He's a 43% CAREER 3-PT shooter. In addition, he's someone who is not going to push for a starting position. He knows his role. He stretches the floor. Look at what we have on that second unit: two corner 3 shooters in Novak and Hood, a rim protector in Gobert, and Exum or Burks penetrating.
