Jazz acquire Novak from Raptors

We have a 14 page thread on Novak? He's a bottom of the bench player, who cares?

People praising this move, and slamming this move, are stupid. This basically means nothing, we just wanted the draft pick and needed to spend money on somebody. That's it.

"My goal is to become one of the best defensive players in the league someday," Hood said Friday.

Smiling, Snyder replied, "I’m going to remember, Rodney, that you said you were going to play defense."

How many of you buy it? Can he turn into a 3 & D guy?

I like the pickup of Novak for his 3 pt shooting, it was needed even though I'm sure most of you wanted Jimmer on the Jazz instead.

Like has been mentioned by some, I'm worried about having a lack of defensive players on the team and hope we can still pick up one or two players that can play D. I don't know what Snyder's scheme is going to be like but I don't want to rely on one where we have to hide weak defensive players night in and night out. I understand sometimes you have to, but I would rather shoot for not having to do so.

We have young players on this team who have never been thought a good defensive system. Can you honestly say you think these guys have been given a chance to be a great defensive team? Corbin may have been the worst coach in the league so most if not all defensive liability falls to him and his schemes, rotations and basic ineptness causing most of our deficiencies. It's been said many times by David Locke and Dennis Lindsay that his best effort to get a better defensive team was to slow down the ball and walk it up court play at a snails pace to limit possessions. That's craziness my friend. We have no idea how good defensively this team could be with a great defensive coach who hopefully teaches responsibility, and gives them a plan for rotations and everything else that goes into being a great defensive team not just a Guy who has no idea what he's doing and resorts to just telling them all that they are a bunch sucks and our only hope is to play the slowest team ball in the league.

Trey Burke and Enes Kanter are likely to start, so.......

^If you were to make a simple post wherein you define one thing as the root of all evil, the place where all blame gets sucked in, and all hope comes spewing out, your post would look something like this.^

Gordon Hayward was out best perimeter defender last year. And the year before. And... you get the picture.

Stop being naive. We need serious reinforcements.

If Aaron Gordon can become a pretty good free throw shooter through hard work, as many have testified, then so to must Novak be able to become a pretty good defender through a little hard work.

Do you see a scenario where Exum proves himself and becomes the starter at some point this coming season?
Is there any way possible Kanter learns to play average defense so he's not a liability?

I get the feeling if we can improve from 30th in D to 24th it might be good enough progress as long as our offense improves more than that. Any way proper rotations and having it be burned into their souls so they don't have to think about it will be enough to stop the bleeding?

Maybe I'm just dreaming.

(may be sarcasm?)

apples and hummingbirds comparison

Novak was 13 when Gordon was born. If he hasn't learned defense before now, what are the odds he does so now? Will always be athletically challenged.

Let's keep it simple:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:

You will never win a championship paying the max to a soft wing who cannot shoot, like Hayward.

Agree or disagree?

Btw, Stan Van said just a few months ago that Hayward was worth $6-8 million per year. Do you think that you know better?

hayward can shoot and he's not soft

so your question doesn't make sense

Honestly, I don't think we can accept anything less than a league-average defense next year. In order to do that, IMO, we need Exum to start (and be for real on defense) and we need two more perimeter defenders. I've mentioned Bazemore and Aminu... maybe Rush is finally rounding back into shape... dunno. But we need an infusion of talent in this regard, not simply a system.

If the Jazz can improve to top 20 team defensively and Snyders offense works the way we're all hoping it does. The Jazz will be on the verge of the playoffs.

As I think more and more about the trade I wish we could have landed a a protected 1st for Novak or at least an additional second round pick. DL must believe Novak can contribute. This will be interesting.

Why? We just relieved the raptors of 3.5 million a year.

And then we're left with a team that can defend, but not shoot, which is just as bad. What we need are 2-way players. Exum fits that description (we think). Hayward is adequate. Favors probably, although he seemed to take a giant leap backwards. A "system" will certainly help some. After all, the worst defensive player the Jazz had two seasons ago played on a pretty good defensive team last year. And it's not like he suddenly became an all-NBA level defender.

I do agree we need a couple of "3 and D" players. Bazemore would be a good addition. I don't like Aminu. He's a complete liability on the offensive side. Let's at least play 4 1/2 on 5.

LOL. You do realize there are MANY teams with CAP space this season and Novak's cap hit was only $3.5M. The ONLY reason we got a 1st from GS is because they were DESPERATE to make the trade to acquire Iguodala and we were the ONLY team at that point that could take on that much in contracts. Also, GS was projected to be a LOT better, so a likely pick the late 20's. Toronto's pick will probably be in the early 20's again. There is ZERO chance they would have given up a first.

Then give us two seconds. One second isn't enough. For his first seven years Novak was getting paid less than $1,000,000 each season.

How much can a second round pick be bought for?

Also, you make it sound like we only got one first round pick from GS. We received 5 draft picks and cash considerations - two unprotected firsts and three seconds.
