Jazz acquire Novak from Raptors

If I understand correctly, the Salary floor situation is such that Novak is free to the Jazz.,. Being below the floor, the Jazz will pay up to the floor value regardless of the quantity of players. So adding another player means the Jazz will pay 3.5 per year to Novak rather than dividing that money among existing team members.. So he's"free"in that sense.
.
And secondly, as most posts have pointed to, this is an overt signal that "Shooting" is an important skill and that a stretch 4 is part of the plan. But it does not preclude that defense is important.

This next year will be about the system. The QS - DL plan will launch and the Acquisition of filler pieces and the trading out of ill fitting pieces will begin. Novak is a minor puzzle piece... but a necessary one to have the system work well enough to evaluate things.

I'm stoked for next year and to watch this era of the Utah Jazz unfold.

Sure, we could have used that spot to get a better player. But we don't need a mildly better player. With a better player comes more playing time and more time taken away from guys who legitimately will be better. That strategy is less effective. Novak can come in, play his role very well, and not take anyone else off the floor. We end up making good moves and justifying them because they're good (I'm talking about something like bringing in an Anthony Morrow or something) but don't realize we're missing out on something better (getting someone who fills a defined role without taking away anything from an Exum, Burks, Hood or Kanter.)

My goodness people...

We got a 3 pt specialist who can play beautifully in situations for nothing. Garrett is a dime a dozen 3rd stringer. We could easily replace him with a call to UVU's Ronnie Price... Assuming he still plays basketball . Even if he didn't, just bring up some D leaguer. So relax and stop acting like we just traded away Lebron.

Lastly, are you idiots insane? Playing Bonner helped SA tip the scales against OKC. SITUATIONS and MATCHUPS. I know it's difficult for some of you to understand. But for the rest of us who understand basketball, we get it. Not every player is going to be a 20 pt iso player or lockdown defender. Using the logic I've seen in some of these posts here, we wouldn't ever be able to fill in a roster because "x player doesn't defend."

Novak can play a vital role in floor spacing, 4 qtr shooting, and bench scoring. Relax, I doubt he'll have a bigger role than The Red Rocket from SA.

DL is bringing in his SA experience here. He's surrounding us with good athletes and 3 pt bombers. Now hopefully some of the crap drafted by KOC forms into our own Big 3.

It just wouldn't be jazzfanz if folks weren't freaking out and bitching about every move no matter how small it is.

Thriller made a good post.

What is life? I am confused.

Last post on this subject. In essence, the Jazz got him for free. Basically, he will help in situations where a long ball or the ability to open the paint is necessary. If Snyder is half the coach/mind/non-Corbin we hope he is, then Novak will be useful.

Beyond that, he maybe one dimensional, but that dimension is something we were hurting at. Small term/small sum contract, plus a 2nd rounder? For a player we probably weren't going to use with Exum on board and maybe Neto coming over?

This is bad how?

Its really not, they could have done better.

Ioannis Papapetrau is an UDFA this year that id prefer over Novak, hes also a set shot guy. he shot 48% from 3 in the euroleague this year, Ioannis would have cost more than your average UDFA but less than Novak certainly. hes 20 or 21 and has solid build to him, hes got some potential to do other things than shoot, hes passable in areas where Novak wasn't a factor in his prime.

I'd have much rather spent that $ on Tyler Honeycutt who in his early 20's athletic and proficient from 3 in Israel this last season he does plenty of other things well, too bad hes going to SL with the Heat.

Some are minimizing his salary because its relation to the cap. 3,750,000 could have be spent better for next season though, theres no doubt about that, just give it a week or 2 to see these contracts for context. I dont think Anthony Morrow is going to land some huge contract and hes much more serviceable than Steve.

The more I think about this the more i think that the 2nd rounder (do we know what year?) is the actual piece in this trade, which may have the most on court value. Novak is a great lockerroom guy i think thats a major part in this move too, theres probably some salary floor ramifications and they must like when his contract expires.

Now that the 2014 draft is done, the Jazz should start angling towards the 2017 Draft ASAP, It looks like they're ahead of the pack already. I do like these moves for the future drafts the Jazz have been making.

Solid post overall. And I feel two things need to be pointed out to all those (not you pgab) who are complaining about this trade and shoving Kent Bazemore and others down the rest of our throats. One, this trade now brings us to what, nine guaranteed contracts for this coming season? Let's say we match Hayward. That's 10. So we still have 3-5 spots for DL to upgrade our roster as he sees best fit by perhaps pursuing a Bazemore, Ioannis, Honeycutt or other such flavor of the month. Secondly, DL is not trying to assemble the best NBA2K roster with insane talent from man 1 to man 15 on the team in the history of gaming. He's trying to construct an intelligently built roster that offers versatility and many options for Quin, I assume in the mold of what the Spurs do.

In this particular case, he may have felt this acquisition killed two birds with one stone. We get the dead-eyed shooter we sorely lacked and we got a vet presence we also didn't have. To do this at a nominal cost while also picking up a 2nd rounder for a guy who may not even make the Raptors roster is a strong move imo. Don't get me wrong. Ioannis sounds intriguing. But do we need another 21 year old? Or do we know that DL isn't still taking a long hard look at the kid? Likewise, do we know DL's not considering Morrow? Or perhaps he's not and there's a reason Morrow will likely be playing for the sixth team in his career. Or, just maybe, Morrow's agent told DL they have no interest because AM wants to be elsewhere, on a contender perhaps like the Thunder who are rumored right now. So really, we have no idea what DL's next move may be and why he didn't get the guy (the general) you wanted is a complete unknown so talking in absolute anger is well, dumb.

says a guy that wants hayward out

Let's keep it simple:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:

You will never win a championship paying the max to a soft wing who cannot shoot, like Hayward.

Agree or disagree?

Btw, Stan Van said just a few months ago that Hayward was worth $6-8 million per year. Do you think that you know better?

So long as he never, ever starts or plays more than 20 mpg, this is a great pick up. A good bench/role player. Corbin would have started him over Anthony Davis because he's a veteran. So glad he is gone... I don't think Snyder will play veterans at any cost, at least I hope not.

So keeping Hayward automatically means the max?

If you are teaching a system that relies on shifting the ball to the open 3 point shooter, you are going to want to get at least one guy that can be relied upon to hit the open jumper, if even for practice purposes. Ideally you may want a couple.

We have a 14 page thread on Novak? He's a bottom of the bench player, who cares?

People praising this move, and slamming this move, are stupid. This basically means nothing, we just wanted the draft pick and needed to spend money on somebody. That's it.

I don't think we have a bad roster in terms of defensive abilities. I think its the scheme from Corbin that made us look so bad. His scheme and getting players on the same page. Development in those areas are huge.
To be determined but at the beginning of last year I don't think anyone thought we were going to be one of the worst defensive teams. I would bet we greatly improve next year.

Outside of Favors and Gobert, who on this team would you call a "defensive player"?
