lindsey......dumb

Lindsey didn't mess up because he didn't give to Hayward he messed up because he didn't trade Hayward when he realized he had no interest in signing for what Lindsey thought was Hayward's value. Now he's in a corner to match or get nothing in return.

patently incorrect.

will not waste my words on those that don't understand..

hayward wanted $13 per year for 4 years and you penny pinched for $12 per year for year.....short-sided....i thought lindsey came from the spurs and was heralded as the next wunderkind

I'm kinda curious why he looks like a genius on draft day and a tard the other 364 days of the year.

Some people seem to expect GM's to have a crystal ball, and get everything right, all the time. Nobody can see the future. Not realistic. So you consider the circumstances and go with the odds. The truth is that DL actually made the right decision and even though the odds didn't work out for him, it WAS the right decision, just as long as he doesn't do something stupid now like match.

13 million is still too much for Hayward.

Pretty much. It is a combination of external factors like the skyrocketing cap forecast, along with dumb owners who did DL in.

I've liked all of Lindsey's moves so far as GM, but I hope he doesn't match. I really like Hayward, but 15.75 mill is a big contract to swallow for a guy who can disappear at any moment. My biggest fear is how much money we will have to extend Burks, I think he can do wonders for the Jazz and would hate to see him go.

13 mil was and still is too much for Hayward. This team needs to find a core group of guys to build around before offering MAX to above average players who are not stars. Maybe Exum will become one, maybe Burke and Burks will explode next year. Perhaps Hood or Kanter will dominate. We need to be in position to keep core guys and not end up in a position of OKC where they could not keep Harden because of large contracts to guys like Perkins.

We need to keep compiling draft picks and sign people to good contracts that can become assets. Paying Hayward the max makes him untradable liability

Lindsey forgot one important factor when figuring if Gordon would get the max or not. Michael frequen Jordan. I seriously doubt any team would give Gordon the Max except for the Hornets. I know we are all having a coronary over paying Gordon the max, but DL figured we could match if we wanted to. The question is, do we want to match Gordon for the max. Get ready to boo opening night...:)

Win some you lose some. Favors at 12 = win. Hayward at 15.75 = loss. Burks will be the rubber game of the series.

Signing Hayward to max contract most likely means Alec Burks will be gone next year. They can now only keep Enes Kanter or Alec Burks next year and not both. The Hayward signing set a precedence for both Burks and Kanter getting max contracts or close to max. It's not good to reward someone that didn't deserve it and had an awful year. The reason I think Burks will be the one leaving is because we already have Hayward and Exum and can't afford to play a bench player a max or close to max contract.

I really like Burks at the end of last season.

Gun to my head, I'm picking Burks over Hayward, no matter the cost.

I agree that in hindsight Lindsay screwed up, but I'm willing to bet that had we extended Hayward for $13 mil/per last season, this board would have exploded with complaints of Lindsay bidding against himself and upset fans claiming that there is no way Hayward would have been offered that much as an RFA.
Yep. There wasn't one fan who said they believed Hayward should get more than Favors. And I'll bet he was asking for more than $13M and likely with the 7.5% increase. If he was asking $14M with 7.5% increases, his contract value would actually be pretty close to his offer sheet from Charlotte (within about $1M).

Why?
The cap is at $63M but the luxury tax is at $76.8M. You can bet both will increase each year, but just for the sake of argument, assume the tax stays the same. Let's also assume Favors'-type money for Kanter an Burks. I'm not advocating $12M for each, just putting those totals in for placeholders. This is just a "quick and dirty" calculation. as many of the amounts are estimations. Add in $500K for a 13th salary and the Jazz are still comfortably under the tax.

What Hayward's contract DOES do, however, is make it unlikely the Jazz sign a significant free agent - unless Burks or Kanter aren't retained. With tax increases, Jazz can probably also re-sign Burke and Gobert. It doesn't get tricky until Favors and Hayward are eligible for their next, significantly higher deals.

No bad intentions I'm sure, but this contract-wall thingie sure does exist to my perception. Favors is one of the best guys on the court character-wise, but you signed him and he let the defense fall down quite a bit. So if you signed Gordon, he would not put up those stats probably. But most probably.

Fixed.
I think it's clear the players were affected by the lack of support from the front office in terms of personnel, which led to the early losing. They righted the ship a bit and then just flat out quit on Ty the last 2 months. It's hard to be motivated when everywhere you go you hear the word, "tank." I have no doubts Hayward's shooting percentages will increase.
