What's new

lindsey......dumb

Signing Hayward to max contract most likely means Alec Burks will be gone next year. They can now only keep Enes Kanter or Alec Burks next year and not both. The Hayward signing set a precedence for both Burks and Kanter getting max contracts or close to max. It's not good to reward someone that didn't deserve it and had an awful year. The reason I think Burks will be the one leaving is because we already have Hayward and Exum and can't afford to play a bench player a max or close to max contract.

Not really. The big issue with GH is if we had given him a 5 year deal. That messes us up. I would not be surprised if that was what the ask was the GH camp to the Jazz. The max is too much for GH but the Jazz have the flexibilty to get it done without doing a lot of damage since they stay at 4 years.

Well, LA just got a player much better than Novak on an expiring contract and netted a first round pick in the process, while DL was busy taking on 7.2 mil non expiring contract of a pathetic scrub Novak for just 2nd rounder. The title of this thread is making more and more sense.

Last year jazz will have cap space to obsorb anything, and it looks like nothing is happening. We obviously don't know the behind the scenes details, and it takes two willing parties to make a deal so I'm going to cut Lindsey some slack on this. His grade still stands at a C in my book.

If his connections are only good enough to pick up 2nd round pick for 7.2 mil and take on two year contract of a pathetic scrub, then we are in big trouble

Where does Lin fit? Does he start over Burke or do you sit Exum for his rookie season?
Also, LA is paying Lin $15M PLUS sending cash to Houston.
IIRC, last year DL bought an additional first for under $3M.

Who's the dumb one? The guy picking up Lin for $15M+ or the one who see a roster full of talent, a *&^% load of picks coming up and nowhere to put them.

I would have been fine with Lin and assets if the Jazz had drafted Aaron Gordon or Noah Vonleh. As soon as they drafted Exum at 5 I realized that one was off the table. They're not going to do anything to stunt his growth. For all intents and purposes, this is Dante Exum's team. They a rebuilding it around him. Lin simply doesn't fit that narrative.

I wasn't thrilled with the Novak deal either but the Lin deal didn't fit with us. He's paid too much and is too good of a player to do nothing. A pick can be had for less.

The Thornton deal would have been good had we decided not to resign Hayward.

His connections were good enough to get us additional picks last summer, one of which turned into what looks like a helluva steal in Hood.
He adeptly traded up to get one of the few serviceable players in the 2013 draft in Burke. And from all accounts - and we'll see in summer league - he may have gotten the best value pick in the draft in Gobert. How much did that pick cost? Did he have to take on $15M in salary to get it? Nope. Bought the pick for cash (less than $3M).

I think DL is a much better GM than you are. Tell me what assets you have acquired from teams? Do you think cap space MIGHT come in handy at the deadline? Or should we have acquired Lin for $15M+ and a pick that is likely going to be in the late 20's given the roster Houston has?

DL had an amazing summer last year. Last couple minor deals haven't been great. He's not perfect, but I have faith he's smarter than us and many other GMs in the league. Be grateful we have him.

I think many assume Novak was ONLY a salary dump. He wasn't. Lindsey was looking for a floor spacer to actually CONTRIBUTE as a backup to Kanter. I'm surprised Lindsey didn't SEND a pick to Toronto.

We already have back-ups to Kanter and Favors: Gobert and Evans. And we spent a pick a while ago on Tomic. Not saying we need to bring him in now, but we have 2 back-ups under contract already and if we need to, we can bring a minimum player as 12th man. Why take up 3.75 mil next year for a 12th man scrub when both Kanter and Burkes are due for contracts and we might actually need that cap space (especially if DL matches Hayward)? This was a dumb move, no mater how you slice it. And now that Hayward might be matched, these 3.75 mil next year might be more important than ever. To put ourselves in this position over a second rounder and a 12th man was just a dumb mistake.
