And how having a gun saves you if the other guy has a gun too? Brake ins, roberies and other small crime will happen unfortunately. Having more guns does not make your country any safer. See Japan for example... gun related crime is 0.001 % there or so. Scandinavian countries - almost zero as well. Basically non existent. You guys need to change your mentality and culture more than gun laws. Now I understand that it is largely impossible to do anything quickly in USA due to amount of firearms in the country. But something needs to be done.
Comparing one countries raw crime statistics to another is inappropriate for a whole host of reasons. Conservatives will often point to mexican gun violence to show the folly in gun control laws.
You can compare a countries murder rate before and after gun control to itself to better understand the effect of the law, even this has it's pitfalls. You still should consider socioeconomic and demographic changes that have taken place over that time period.
If you look at the yearly murder rate in England you will see that it has been much lower than the US since forever. You will also see that since instituting the 1996 handgun ban the murder rate has actually increased. Likewise if you look at the US murder rate since the expiration of the assault weapons ban you will see it has actually gone down.
Both of these are likely caused by changing factors such as immigration, median age, education, income inequality, etc. rather than the gun control laws. The evidence for reduced crime or even murder because of gun control laws doesn't really hold up if you actually bother to look at the stats objectively.
