2014 College Football

Walking away from this. You are drawing conclusions with very little data. Talk to me when both have played 5-6 games.

Wilson has played 6 games when healthy vs BCS teams, this year and last. Hill has play 9 games when healthy vs BCS teams this year and last. Pretty good sample size. And Hill hasn't faced anywhere near the level of competition Wilson has faced.

Yet Wilson has been the better QB by a long shot. Including the 6 INT game.

It is what it is. Hill is a great athlete and a good QB. Wilson is the better QB.

UCLA/Texas is the only semi interesting game this weekend. Horrible week of football. Some might say Georgia/South Carolina looks interesting but South Carolina has a bottom 5 defense in football. Not the SEC, but in all of football. Georgia should kill them. Their RB should have 250+ yards rushing.

Boring week of football.

I don't post often here, but I can't let this one go without a rebuttal. I don't doubt that you truly believe that Wilson is better, but let's take a look at the facts:

* Both have started 18 games in their career (Taysom has played in 22 games and Wilson 23)
* Passing Yards Taysom has 4,052 Wilson has 3,584
* Rushing Yards Taysom has 2,034 Wilson has 475
* Pass TD's Taysom has 27 Wilson has 29
* Rush TD's Taysom has 20 Wilson has 10
* Interceptions Taysom has 19 Wilson has 22
* QB Rating Taysom 122.3 Wilson 133.1
* Comp % Taysom 56.6 Wilson 59.5
* Pass attempts Taysom 572 Wilson 479
* 2012 SOS BYU 48 Utah 82 (Taysom started 2, Wilson 7)
* 2013 SOS BYU 40 Utah 31 (Taysom started 13, Wilson 9)
* 2014 SOS to date BYU 41 Utah 190 (Taysom started 3, Wilson 2)
* Record as starter Taysom 13-5 Wilson 9-9

Taysom has over 2,000 yards more in total offense, 8 more total TD's, 3 less interceptions, and 4 more wins in the same amount of starts. Wilson is a marginally more efficient passer, but Taysom is by far the more exciting and explosive player and can win games with his legs. The perception, however, is Wilson has played much tougher opponents, but that is not the case. Their overall SOS for their first 18 starts is very comparable. Wilson has played UCLA(0-2), Stanford (1-0), and USC(0-1), Arizona(0-2), Washington(0-1), BYU (1-0). Taysom has played Wisconsin(0-1), Notre Dame(0-1), Texas(2-0), Washington(0-1), Utah (0-1).

Wilson is a good QB and I hope he and the Utes do well this year with their gauntlet of a schedule, I really do. I graduated from the U and root for them except for when they play BYU. The reality is, Hill is the better overall QB, and it's really not even close.

I think Georgia/SC will be much more interesting than you think.

While neither one of these games have big names, they could be kind of enjoyable. Arkansas @ TTU & WVU @ Maryland. I don't think Texas Tech is very good so I don't know if that game will be that great (but it's in Lubbock, which helps them), but Maryland beat WV 37-0 last year so I think WV will be coming out fired up.

But yeah, no big battles between elite teams or anything.

Tenn/Oklahoma is one you might be overlooking that could be really good.

OU is about a 3 TD favorite and have looked extremely good. Tennessee just isn't that great. It could be close, but I don't really anticipate it will be.

Good post. I'll try to get back to it when I have time. I will say this, right off the bat. I only took stats from Wilson and Hill vs BCS teams from the last two years and I only used stats when Wilson could actually hold the ball. Because I don't care what his stats where when he couldn't grip the ball, because those games are completely irrelevant.

I know a lot of Wilson detractors love to point to those games to show he sucks, but that isn't the most intelligent thing to do, well, because it was a very unique situation. How often is a QB asked to play when he cannot grip the ball? Hardly ever. So, I don't care. You can care if you want to, because Wilson sucked in those games, as would any QB who could not grip the ball.

You did post Hil's overall stats, and that is great. He will have better stats, because his schedule is immensely easier. His opponents suck for the most part. He should have better stats. When you take away the crap opponents and just compare stats vs BCS teams and when Wilson can grip the ball, Wilson's stats are much better.

You mentioned SOS. That stat is crap. BYU gets a boost because they lost to ND, while Utah doesn't get that boost. Let's look at 2012 and the schedules that BYU and Utah played:

UCLA vs ND - ND is better
Oregon State vs Oregon State - Equal. BYU lost by more.
USC vs SJSU - USC is better
Arizona State vs Boise St - ASU is better
BYU vs Utah - Utah is better (duh)
Arizona vs Utah State - Arizona is better
Utah State vs Georgia Tech - USU is better
Washington vs SDSU - Washington is better
Cal vs Washington State - Cal is better
Washington State vs Hawaii - Wash St is better
Colorado vs Idaho - Colorado is better
Northern Colorado vs Weber St - Northern Colorado is better

Yet, you're telling me that BYU's schedule was almost twice as hard as Utah's that year. Seriously? Do you honestly believe that BYU's schedule was harder that year, let alone twice as hard? Utah played 9 BCS teams (10 if you count BYU) and BYU played 5. Yet, BYU had the harder schedule?

Do you not believe that Utah wins 9-10 games with BYU's harder schedule, yet was only able to win 5 games with the easier schedule?

SOS is crap in this case.

Also, I want this thread to survive. If anyone is sick of me talking about Wilson and Hill, I'll stop. Just reply a stop.

I, for one, started this thread thinking that Taysom Hill was the best qb in the nation. I now understand that Wilson and a man named dak are better Quarterbacks than Taysom Hill because The Wilson is better against bcs opponents and the man named Dak doesn't shrink in the red zone.

For the love of all that is Holy, STOP! Nobody is convincing anybody.

Probably the best post of the thread. I love getting caught up in the back and forth that is the rivalry, but at the end of the day, nobody has ever changed the mind of an opposing fan on these topics. Plus, at this point it's not an apples-to-apples type of comparison any more. These two teams now live in completely different worlds.

Perfect example: let's say BYU goes undefeated, makes a New Years Day bowl game, and loses a close/hard fought game to a P5 school. On the flip side, let's say Utah exceeds expectations, wins 8 games and goes to the Holiday Bowl where they notch their 9th win of the season. Who had the better year? Both fan bases would literally argue that point for years.

I'm very content where Utah is at, and while it might be a pretty tough road right now, I find a strange comfort in the fact that every year, I'm gonna have a true sense of how Utah stacks up against the "big boys" of college football. Undefeated seasons in the MWC were great and exciting, but it always left me with the question of: "just exactly how good are they"?

I know most BYU fans want the exact same thing, and in all honesty, I hope before too long they're in the Big 12 getting the chance to answer those same questions.

Your mind has been enlightened, young padawan.

So, BYU fan. After the lackluster showing on Thursday, and seeing voters drop UCLA and Washington after similar showings, I assume you guys are rooting for UConn and Texas today? I think if those two teams win, it makes you look a lot better.

That being said, Boise is abusing UConn so far, but are only up 7-3. UConn needs to slow down Boise's defensive line.

BYU plays Boise too so that one doesn't matter. There are already 3 ranked teams on the ropes and it's only 11:00. BYU will be just fine. AND UCF and Virginia just happen to be two of the teams that are giving the ranked teams problems - and BYU plays both of them. And we'll see if UCLA is as overrated as they've looked the first two weeks tonight.
