I do find it sort of a shame that since the move to the PAC, there really are no ute fans anymore, just PAC12 fans living in SLC. Makes the rivalry a little less fun.
Both Utah and BYU suck.

Byu win was very ugly.... however they had 3 days to prepare (Monday Tuesday Wednesday) they had tons of penalties (becoming a problem) they had a player ejected, lost the turnover battle 3-0, and were ripe to have a letdown after thier (likely) biggest game of the year.
And they were missing thier best defensive player.
Still won. I will take it.
Hill still needs to improve on his passing a lot
If byu beats Virginia by a touchdown then I will be happy. Virginia beat a ranked team last week and Damn near beat a mighty pac12 top dog.Interesting rationalization for BYU's uninspiring win over a Houston team who lost to UT-San Antonio by a bigger margin. I wonder if Houston was playing on a short week too? Oh that's right, they were. On the road no less. This is like last years Virginia game when BYU had to play in that horrible weather. I still hear that excuse from Y fans. I guess nobody realizes Virginia was playing in that weather too.
I'm sure if BYU only manages to beat Virginia by a TD or less this week, it will have
everything to do with reasons beyond their control and nothing to do with the fact that maybe, just maybe, they're not as good as all the apologists are desperate to believe.

Great question and especially pertinent now with the Cougars in the hunt for a New Year's Six bowl game.
Let's start with the Big 12, where they are clearly above Texas after whipping the Longhorns in Austin. I definitely don't think they're on par with elite powers like Baylor and Oklahoma this year, but they could have a solid case against the mid-level teams in the league like Kansas State, TCU, West Virginia and Oklahoma State. I'd probably slot them third or fourth in the Big 12 this year, but it's still early in the season and we don't really know what to expect from teams like the Horned Frogs.
As for the Pac-12, things are a little trickier. In the North, I'd put them a solid third behind Oregon and Stanford and ahead of Washington at this point. Things are a little murkier in the South. Were BYU to be in that division, I could even envision the Cougars winning it given how shaky UCLA and USC have been. Based on current play, I'd put them at the top of the South actually, especially with Taylor Kelly questionable for Arizona State the next few weeks and offensive line issues at USC and UCLA.

I just read that byu is #1 in the nation in amount of penalties against, and #1 in penalty yards.
Hopefully bronco can get that cleaned up. Strange that a team with older (more mature?) players would lead the nation in penalties.
How quick you are to forget your 2008 Utah Utes team. In 2008 Utah had some UGLY wins:
Michigan (3-9) 25-23. Michigan lost to Toledo (3-9), Illinois (5-7), and Purdue (4-8),
Air Force 30-23
New Mexico (4-8) 13-10. NM lost to Colorado State, UNLV, and Air Force
Even that AP #2 Utah team had to squeak out a few wins against bad teams, but that doesn't mean they weren't good. Only time will tell with BYU, but in order to go undefeated most teams have to grind out a few ugly wins to get there, even your 2008 Utes.
I always though that this had more to do with a consistent coaching staff's and schemes under Lavell Edwards.
Also this year BYU is playing a number of underclassmen or transfers.
It could also have something to do with the fact that under Bronco, BYU tacklers seem to love leading with their heads.
Actually, most of their penalties have had to do with NOT using their heads, if you know what I mean.
