BYU @ Utah basketball game......

Anybody excited for this one tonight? I think I'm probably going to go to SLC and watch it. Obviously BYU is the better team on paper, but Utah hung tough with SDSU and has a lot of length and a couple of guys that can put the ball in the hole at a high level, so it wouldn't shock me if Utah won . Should be fun.

Utah would be extremely lucky to get a win tonight. As good as the football rivalry has been the past 20+ years, the basketball side of it has been brutal. Utah was far and away the better program during the fatman's years and now that has flip-flopped. Yeah, there's been a good game sprinkled in here or there but for the most part both schools have taken turns being the doormat.

I'm still not sure Boylen's the guy going forward but either way I would expect the match-up to even out a little over the next few years. Jimmer is a once in a lifetime type of player. Probably the best ever to play at BYU. He's obviously somebody BYU can't replace once he leaves, and while I think Utah Basketball will struggle a ton during their entrance into the Pac12, I also think it will only serve to deepen the recruiting pool for the Utes, which should help in the coming years.

My very uneducated guess would be that Boylen is gone after this year. Isn't 4 years about the standard point where you can get rid of a guy that is likeable but just not working out for your school because of the recruiting cycles? It's pretty much just his players losing ballgames now. Although the talent level does seem to be improving. I wish Clyburn played for BYU.

Re: Jimmer's replacement. BYU may have lucked out because Matt Carlino, a UCLA transfer, is going to be able to play next year in Dec. and is supposedly the real deal. Maybe more of a Stockton type point guard than a scorer, so BYU will need somebody else to pick up the scoring slack, but still much better than we would have had coming in next year.

This isn't any rivalry

In order for it to be a rivalry the other team needs to win once in a while. I can't remember the last time the Utes beat the Cougars. Was it when they had Andre Miller?

Utah will be lucky to be within 20 points when all is said and done. This Utes Basketball team is horrible. I doubt they could even beat Snow College, SUU, Weber State, and UVU. In fact, they could probably even lose to Lone Peak High School. I doubt Boylin is going to be around much longer. Utes are struggling just to get 5 thousand to their games anymore.

Meanwhile, BYU is reaching new heights with their Basketball team. It's kinda sad that BYU has put all their eggs into the Football Basket. Perhaps they would have been better off looking out for their Basketball program a little more. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rose getting some considerations from Utah, the Pac-10, or Big 10/12 schools after this season.

I think how Utah finishes from here on out decides Boylen's fate. As Duck noted, I think it's fair to say Boylen did a good job getting better atheletes this season. Now that they've had half a season to play together, Boylen needs to show that he's taking that talent and making progress. If Utah has a respectable showing to end the season, I think its' enough to bring him back. I highly doubt Chris Hill wants to be shopping for a new coach right when Utah is set to enter the Pac12.

Will Clyborn will have a better NBA career than Jimmer, or no?

Boylen should have been fired the end of last season. Dude is a losing hack of vinyloney proportions.

You might be right. The one thing that puzzels me about Boylen is despite his losing at Utah, he is still highly thought of in coaching circles. I think his name was being kicked around as a possible Iowa hire at the end of last season which seemed really strange to me.

And who knows, perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe searching for a coach this offseason is something Chris Hill wouldn't mind. Maybe Utah's Pac12 entrance helps them land a coach they wouldn't have normally been able to get. Either way, it would be nice if they could at least field a decent team that was somewhat fun to talk about/watch.

This program has been too bad for too long. No excuse for it.

I agree with Bronco.
I think it will be a fun game to watch for Y fans.
I am a little bit worried though that this could be a tarp game, because the Utes have enough talent and length to make a game of it.

Y - 79
U - 65

As a U fan I'm not as excited for this game as I usually am (for obvious reasons). On the Boylen front for some reason I still like him he seems genuine and passionate some times too much so and gets too fired up. One thing that frustrates me to no end is the lack of offense cohesion and looking like they run some semblance of an offense, I remember thinking the same and worse about the offense for Giacoletti .

I thought at first it could be cause I'm used to watching the Jazz and college just wont look as crisp but after years of not scoring as much as other teams it's wearing really thin. I think the defense has been good but the last 2yrs for some reason rebounding has went way down, maybe he needs better assistants I'm not sure but I would agree if he doesn't finish the season on a up tick he may not get to see how this talent molds and plays next year.

Probably not. Jimmer's at least going to get a shot, that much we know. I don't know if we can say the same about Clyburn. In fact, he's not even on either of the two main draft sites as of right now . I like him though.

Utah's problem is that Boylen hasn't been able to keep players in the program. It feels like every year they start with a new team.

And the inability to run an offense. The Utah offense is completely non-existent. It's almost like he's trying to run a conservative offense where they post up their bigmen. Unfortunately, Utah doesn't have bigs who are offensively gifted. It's like trying to run the pick and roll with Greg Ostertag instead of Karl Malone... It doesn't work...

I think a lot of this stems from being with Tom Izzo at MSU. That offense is effective, but you gotta recruit for it. Michigan St always has at least 2-3 big men that can dominate at the college level offensively. The Utes, while trying to run a similiar offense, has guys like David Foster (not Zach Randolf).

The Utes do play with a lot of heart and toughness defensively. That's the only reason why they'll win any games this year.

If only they could get anything out of their offense....

I agree, Jimmer is better known and is at least going to get a shot. With that being said, I'm not sure how he translates in the NBA. Isn't he a bit of a "tweener"? Seems to me he doesn't have the pure PG skills that he'd need in order to play the 1 in the NBA and he's pretty small for a 2.

I know that Golden State drafted Curry and moved him to PG with some success but I would say that Stephon is a little bit better of an athelete than Jimmer. Seems to me a good NBA comparison at this point would be JJ Reddick. Is that fair or am I way off?

There was another topic in the Utah Jazz forum awhile ago where I said I didn't think he will translate very well. His outside shot is great, unguardable even, I have never seen range like his before, and the kid shoots in every situation imaginable so he catches everyone off guard. So that part is fine at the next level. If he can get on the court, he'll still put up points. However, I don't like him driving to the hoop. He has very nice handles, he can get by his guy, but that 2nd tier help in the NBA is going to eat him alive. He gets blocked inside a lot even in college. His little scoop move is not going to work. And he doesn't pass extremely well in those situations. And he gets caught in weird spots all over the court. And he's an average defender.

Reddick is far too normal though to compare to Jimmer. He's a good shooter, has developed his bounce game, has improved his defense, but he's kind of a typical player. Fredette's completely unorthodox. That might be the reason he ultimately has so much success in the NBA, but I'm expecting more like an Eddie House career.

However, I also think somebody is going to take him in the lottery. He's a better athlete than people give him credit for and that will show in his workouts and at the combine. He'll light up Portsmith(is that the name of the pre-draft tourney?) if he plays there and be the golden boy of the subsequent summer league.

I'd take him on the Jazz. There is a shot he could be special. And he can improve on some of the negatives.

How many NBA point guards really "have the pure PG skills" that they need in the NBA? I also think assist stats in college are worthless. Deron averaged 3.6 assists per game his last year with Illinois. Does that mean he sucks as a PG? Arenas plays PG... but is he really a PG? AI played point, but was he really a point? Reddick is not a good example because he always needed set up for a shot, off of a screen or something. Jimmer creates his own shot most of the time. It would do Jimmer some good if he learned to shoot off of screens, but I dont see that happening this year.
