I think the brawl was a perfect statement about BYU's athletic department right now. Everyone is tired and frustrated from being pushed around and only the players seem to have each others' backs.

Serious question: Is it all that smart for BYU athletics to get into a pissing match with these business men? Seems to me that these business men/church leaders would cut off their nose to spite their face if they felt like they were backed into a corner. If you listen to folks like Gordon Monson (not that you should listen to him), he'd have you believe those same people are half ready to pull the plug on athletics to begin with.

I can tell you with 100% honesty that I'm not missing the game. The rhetoric and animosity from both sides leading up to the games started to take away from the enjoyment IMO. It will take time for Utah to forge some true rivalries in the PAC, but I'm willing to be patient. I've enjoyed this football season as much as I ever have and that was without BYU on the schedule. You can speak for yourself, because there is certainly not a void in my life when they're off the schedule.

I'm still hoping that they can hook up with the Big 12 down the line. I think that the whole state benefits when Utah, BYU and USU are having success and being relevant. And nothing breeds success like competition. Long term, it would be good for both BYU and Utah to end up in different power conferences and scheduling home and home games every couple of years.

Regarding the fight (which is what we were discussing), like broncs, you are going to see what you want to see. Read hey heys post (a ute fan btw..... One of the most fair and reasonable ute fans.) And ellis post (not a byu fan) and archies post (another ute fan who also makes fun of byu losing to Memphis)
Also listen to the announcers of the game in the video.

As for byu's record/season...... I, and pretty much every byu, would agree with you that it was a disappointing season filled with lame games/opponents, and devastating injuries.
I'm glad it's over.

Competition does breed success but the past 4 years have changed everything. BYU and Utah used to compete for the same things. Now, they compete for completely different things. BYU being in a power conference obviously gives their fan base a shot in the arm, but does it really change anything for Ute and Aggie fans? USU is doing well in the MWC and Utah's future success has little to no ties to what happens with BYU. I'm sure 2 different power conferences in the state would be nice for the wishy-washy fans who claim to root for both teams, but for the most part, you're either a Ute or a Cougar fan. BYU could drop athletics tomorrow and Utah would be just fine. In fact, you could even argue that they'd be even stronger for it.

Check out any other big time college rivalry games and you will see that same emotion and output by the fans and players. It's what makes college sports fun. This season was absolutely incredible and no, not playing BYU didn't take away from that at all. But its the rivalry games that add to it to make it that much more memorable/amazing. Like I said, I would love to see the Utes have at least 2 heated rivalry games on the schedule.

If it takes going back to the MWC then you do it. BYU needs to have a conference. In the MWC, they will find themselves in 3 out of the next 5 big bowl games. I think the entire athletic department would see a surge in excitement and moral. Dave Rose won't say it (Unlike Bronco, who has been very vocal), he hates playing in high school gyms and would much rather be in the MWC.

Honestly, I think this is the answer for BYU if a BIG12 invite doesn't happen this next round. Then have all of the out of conference games be big time games.

I'm 37. The first year I can remember being invested in the Utah-BYU rivalry was at the age of 9 in 1986. For the first 2 years of my fandom, BYU trounced Utah (as they had been doing for years), and then in 1988 was the game at Rice Stadium when Scott Mitchell and the Utes finally broke through. Obviously, it was a few more years before Utah could beat BYU with any sort of consistency, but I was fully invested before then. I also have no problem admitting that I can remember a time when Utah's viability pretty much solely depended on BYU. It was Utah's biggest game of the year and a subpar season was not considered subpar so long as they beat BYU.

The genesis for my "meh" attitude towards playing BYU is probably because I tend to lean towards traditions not always being sacred. The landscape has shifted dramatically since those days and it's just not the same. For what it's worth, had Utah been left in the MWC and BYU went to the Big 12, I really have a hard time thinking BYU fans would give a rats *** about Utah when they'd have the likes of Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, and TCU coming to town. Who could blame them?

The fact of the matter is, when you have games against USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Stanford on the schedule, it really fools you into not missing the game against BYU. Some will say that's an elitist view, but I just think it's the truth and would also be the case for BYU fans if they were in Utah's shoes.

When we play them again in 2016, I'll be excited, but I won't be any more excited than I've been for the games against Michigan.

I loved the rivalry. But most of the stuff that made this a great rivalry was lost the minute they were in separate conferences. Though it's still a blast to rib BYU fans and rub in their faces how much better off our program is at this point. It still lost a lot when Utah left them behind. Even the last couple of games after the split just did not feel the same.

An apples to oranges argument. Suspenders Boy pussing out on Bronco is a FAN thing. Not even in the same ballpark as what happened yesterday between two teams.

From watching it a few times, I actually consider Memphis the aggressor. I also have no problem with BYU's initial reaction of trying to save one of their teammates who was being ganged up on. However, all the horrible behavior after that can be placed evenly on both teams. #12 from BYU got what was coming to him and continued to act just as awful as any of the Memphis players. The "They started it argument" is not going to excuse BYU's part of the brawl. Quite honestly, shame on both teams.

And it's not fair, but BYU is going to bear the brunt of this from an image standpoint. While Memphis may have been the aggressor, Memphis is also not a religious institution that goes out of it's way to point out how they have higher moral standards and are "different" from other schools. 5 years from now, people will still remember the "BYU Brawl" and Memphis will be but a foot note. Like I said, that isn't fair, and even I don't agree with it, but when you tie yourself to the hip with your religion and supposed higher standards, you're going to be a target to some degree.

And Big B, as far as Ute fans thinking this hasn't/couldn't/wouldn't happen with their team, all I can say is that so far, it hasn't. Might it happen someday? Certainly. I think any team could find themselves in this position at some point. However, this is really bad timing for BYU from an image standpoint. You're not too removed from a few of your players being involved in a brawl with customers at a Mexican restaurant in which punches were thrown, we've seen Max Hall find himself in a bad spot after being a flag waver for class and morals while calling out Utah and their fans, and now the Miami Beach Brawl.

Is all of that BYU's fault? Certainly not, but it's seriously bad PR for a school that strives for the EXACT opposite kind of press and it comes on the heels of a what could be considered an underachieving season for a team that's trying to present itself as a program that warrants P5 inclusion. The big picture isn't pretty right now.
