12-year-old with air gun dies in Cleveland police shooting

It's unreal these dumb american pigs cant just use rubber bullets. Every other country can handle a 12-year old kid playing with a toy gun no matter how real it looks without the kid ending up dead, but we can't. Welcome to NRA America filled with dumb conservatives with a warped sense of freedom who embrace wielding a gun and aren't afraid to kill. What a disgrace.

What do you do for a living HH?

Are you proposing cops always use rubber bullets?

I'm a private ski and snowboard instructor. And why not in most situations? Why not have a gun with real bullets but another one with rubber? Or a taser? Why always fire live ammunition? I know a high IQ isn't needed to be a police officer, but even they should be able to have the cognitive power to know when to use a gun with rubber bullets compared to real? Given what the Cleveland PD has already released, it's obvious real bullets weren't needed.

Why the **** don't you move? You're obviously so thrilled to be in America, just move.

The complete and utter lack of respect for law enforcement on this board baffles me.

In the past five years, more Utahns have been killed by police than by gang members.Or drug dealers. Or from child abuse.
And so far this year, deadly force by police has claimed more lives — 13, including a Saturday shooting in South Jordan — than has violence between spouses and dating partners.

Another version of the news story.

In short someone was a at a rec center point what a appeared to be a real gun at several people. Somebody call 911 and said there is the young guy pointing a gun at people. Police show up order him to put his hands up and he reaches for the gun and gets shot.

Note the air gun was modified to remove the orange tip. The linked article show pictures of the airsoft gun. Personally I would have believe it was a real weapon from a distance.

My questions are?

Why did his parents let him have access to an modified air gun? Or did a friend give it to him? Or at least the parents should know something about it? Why did he think it was good idea to take an air gun into public and point it at people? Why didn't he obey lawful commands from Police? This last question is the only real point of contention to me. Did he really make a reaching for a gun motion?

Based on what the Police knew at the time they made the correct decision. As the taser/rubber bullet stuff--- when confronted with what appears to be a real firearm-- all police officers would use lethal force.

Was the kid a minority?

Um, no. Not all police officers are going to start blasting at a kid on a playground. I would imagine most would consider the possibility that the gun might be a toy. The caller even told them it was probably a fake. One way or another, this is unacceptable, so if people really believe the officers acted appropriately, I think we need to take a good look at ourselves as a society.

Well if police are killing more people than gangs, drug dealers, child abusers, domestic abusers, etc. then I wonder why? Our legal system isn't based on police "putting down" criminals. I certainly don't want it to be about that. Do we really believe that criminals would rather engage in a shootout with police than face a jury?

Certainly there are cases where the police must defend themselves. But maybe they need to have more justification then a person not following their commands as fast as they would have liked.

I wish there was someone who could protect us from the police.
