So for those of you not named Zulu, who would you comparé Burks to?

I say hes à Nice player to have on your team, but I would never want to pay him more than $8 mil/year.

sad to say but after 2 and a half years, we haven't seen enough to really know yet.

I don't pay him more than MMLE. Why? he's inconsistent. Gives you 30 one night, costs you 20 the other. Also doesn't show much interest into defense. Goes to the free throw line fairly often, and misses too much from there. His 3 point shot is mediocre, as his free throws indicate. Below avg on his hero ball head through the wall offense and way worse defensively. Typical 2nd unit player who may receive below 10 min one night, and 30 the other. But avg you have him on the floor 16-18 min on a productive team and use his strengths.

Good counter arguement.
See i understand that im a burks homer, but i think you know my posting history and you have seen me be plenty critical and fair and unbiased when it comes to byu related things most of the time......even my post on the last page of this thread i told zulu that even i cant put burks at the top of our core 5 right now.

But you must understand that you have some bias in this discussion as well since you have always had burks at the bottom of your list and have not watched him play during the best stretch of his young career (now that he is finally getting consistent minutes) so of course you are going to be stubborn about this.
Maybe someone besides ugli can tell me why its a bad comparison. (another guy i compare him to is james harden, though harden has a much better 3 point shot.)

Wade was alot stronger than burks and a better defender.
Both are great at getting to the line.... wade was better but of course he was a star so early on (he got 35 minutes per game rookie year) and the man on his team from the get go and was getting superstar treatment.
Both are quick and have a great first step...... I actually think burks is quicker and has a better first step (NO ONE can stay in front of alec burks.... seriously)
Both have suspect outside shots..... Burks shot is getting better and better (2 for 2 from about 20 feet last night) and i think burks MIGHT be the better shooter already.
Both are good ball handlers for thier position...... Pretty even in this area i think
Both are good rebounders for thier postition..... wade is the better of the two
I think burks is the better passer.

But its hard to compare the two because burks is just barely really starting his nba career this season (finally getting consistent minutes and consistent role) so we dont know what burks as a finished product will be..... but he does have some GREAT skills to work with.

Its like the whole comparing embiid to olijuwan thing...... embiid has some similar skills but he has not played nearly long enough for anyone to really take the comparison seriously.

also like i said before..... d wade was 22 years old in his rookie year and if you look at his numbers per 36 (he averaged 35 per game) and burks numbers per 36, they are pretty even........... and that includes burks horrible november. If you were to take out november then i think burks numbers would be better than d wades 22 year old rookie year.

Ya, ive seen that.

So what did you think of it?
did you think burks looked good that game or did he look liked he sucked?

You dont even put a comment about it, just "ya, ive seen that" as if it was a ho hum type game.

Watch the video again and look and see if you see burks do dwayne wade type things.
I would say another thing that burks is better than wade at is "hoodini" type trick shots.

Honestly thought the D Wade thing was a joke. Cmon Fishbro, that's pretty bad.

I don't dislike Burks at all, I just think he is a slightly above average NBA player who at the peak of his career will be a borderline NBA starter.

That game was impressive. Ive never ever said Burks sucked, I just totally disagree that he is some elite asset that we have. I just think he is a nice young player, but not a building block of a franchise by a long shot.

Thats fair...... Just remember that he is still getting better and better and it looks like he has not reached his ceiling.

IMO its still too early to tell how good burks will be, I have no idea. He might be close to his ceiling right now and you could be right that he will just be an average starter or good bench player....... or he might not be close to his ceiling yet and he could surpise us all.

He does have some of the same skills as wade though (ball handling, finishing in traffic/through contact, getting to the line, super quick first step off the dribble) but wade was the man on his team and everything went through him as a number 1 option.

Right now we are seeing what burks can do with some good consistent minutes in a good role..... I wonder what would happen if we just started him and made him the number 1 option and told him to be a ball hog and just attack whenever he felt he has a chance to score.
He might fall flat on his face, but im at least starting to entertain the thought that he can be a number 1 option.

BTW, this is the opinion that most people SHOULD have of burks since he has not had much of a chance in his career to show us a whole lot.

Myself, zulu, and the other big burks homers are for sure seeing things that are not there yet due to small sample size glimpses...... but not every player in the league is a star from day one, especially with a vet lovin coach like corbin

I honestly think that there is a chance that if the jazz drafted D Wade and corbin was the coach that we might be thinking "that d wade is a pretty decent starter."

Update! It does not look good!

@UGLI, who do you compare burks to?

Frank compared him to nick young and thats not a bad comparison.... Young is a better shooter but a way bigger chucker, burks has a better attitude and is quicker and a better passer, but if your looking for a more realistic comparison i think thats a pretty good one for now.

Burks is much more than a fringe starter and much less than dwade. Not sure who he comps to, but if he ever averaged 35 min a game, avg 15-16 shots he could be borderline all star. He has all the tools to be a lock down defender if he wants to be. I think he has a bright future and put him ahead of kanter if I had to rank core 5.

Sorry but nick young is a really poor comparison. Burks helps us win. Nick young has never helped a team win.

Good post, and if im honest from what he has had the opportunity to show us so far, then uglis opinion is probably still more realistic.
But just off my opinion and what i am seeing from him, i agree with vermins post..... I think D wade is a bit unrealistic but i could see burks being a similar player.... just a rung or two down from wade.

I agree....... frank mentioned it a few times and could see some similarities (size, athleticism, confidence, swagger, finishing in awkward trick shot situations) but i do think burks has alot more variety to his skillset, a better attitude, better defender, better passer, better rebounder, and alot more room to improve due to his much younger age.
Nick youngs only advantage is that he is a better 3 point shooter.

Burks is simply not good. Don't look at per 36s, look at the game and his advanced. He disrupts the team concept. There's a reason he hasn't gotten more playing time, because he makes everyone around him worse when his basketball antics aren't working. He doesn't defend anyone and there's one reason you shouldn't compare him to Wade: Wade was a roolkie, this is Burks 3rd year and he's barely efficient when playing vs reserve units. One is a first year I still got to figure it out production vs starter, the other guy is 3rd year against reserves and stuff. As I said. $3M is max I'd spend on him in this condition.
ANd I forgot. His BBIQ and off ball movement are so low. Really a no show if playing off the ball. But then again: His 3 pointer is shaky. Not much spacing he can provide. Everyone takes away the backdoor cut when helping away from him.
