What's new

2011 draft.....

I think some people are expecting KOC to draft our new savior in this draft. Even if we get a top 3 pick I don't see anybody reaching the Lebron/Wade/Durant/Dirk level. So I'm completely prepared to let KOC do whatever he wants in this draft. Either he'll swing for the fence and miss, or he'll draft some key role players that we're going to need down the road. Either way we should be in a relatively similar situation next year and next years draft is going to be the one that KOC should be scrutinized for.

You and Bentley make some points, but it's important to me that now that the Jazz have a chance to build a team through the draft and finally get players that play the game right - AND hopefully have a little more talent than what they're usually left with at 20-something - that they do that. Build a smart, versatile team and if you don't get any superstars and you don't get better quickly, you'll have a chance to pick one up in the draft. I believe in trying to do something between the 2002-2008 Pistons and the Hakeem Rockets. That is, building a well-rounded team that can hurt you from a lot of angles, but having one guy that can shoulder an inordinate burden (and not just scoring). Now, I don't know who that player is, but I'm positive it's not a guy that somehow plays even smaller than his stick-figure body and doesn't care about defense or rebounding. That's not smart ball, and that's not how you win.

Anyway, I'm wasting a lot of time and energy on this. Go Jazz. I love everyone and everything ever.

I got a little lost in the middle - so, Numb, which camp are you in?

A) the jazz should draft safer more reliable role players
or
B) the jazz should swing for the fences on high risk/high reward players

?

Uggh, I don't like him at six at all. True, he easily has one of the highest ceiling of any player in the draft, but I think he will probably slide to #12. But I'm not really worried about it. It's just a pre-workout, pre-combine, pre-lottery selection "rumor".

That report could be a decoy, but I like Montiejunas more than Okur or Bargnani. I think he'd be a decent stretch 4 playing off of Favors, and he's pretty automatic with his hook shots. I just worry that he might be a step slow, but I think he's quicker than Pau Gasol. If we drafted Montiejunas at 6, I'd look for Josh Selby, Reggie Jackson or Marcus Morris at 12.

I hope not. Dirk is one-of-a-kind for a reason. And while I HATED the Hayward pick, I figured if he could get through the breakers he'd be okay since he's a smart - but almost more importantly - GRITTY player willing to do what it took to win. And he was consistent. Motiejunas is the absolute definition of soft-serve Euro crap. For a team that's been searching for a real interior presence since Malone and has a serious problem rebounding and holding down the interior, this is the stupidest move they could make. Especially since they already have 3 bigs for the rotation. What?

The only assertive big in this draft is Kanter, and even he has question marks. But lets wait til we know where we're drafting, and lets see these guys in a workout together.

Depends on the context. When it comes to a guy that plays like Charmin and has the numbers to back it up, you can't sell me on the merits of whatever it is he MIGHT bring. You know, provided he wasn't Charmin. I don't support swinging-for-the-fences unless the upside is a player that still has the potential to produce AND play the game the right way. KG was a swing-for-the-fence player that worked out, though unproven at any level at the time. But he had the groundwork for something great.

So, no on Motiejunas on swinging for the fences. Yes on Biyombo on swinging for the fences. Let's compare apples to apples: upside. If Motiejunas is the next Bargnani (he will not be the next Dirk, let's get real) and Biyombo is the next Ben Wallace, who do you choose? All of this is conjecture and dependent on who's left when the Jazz draft where, but if they're both there and Kanter, Knight, Irving, and Williams are gone, who do you draft?

If Kanter, Knight, Irving and Williams are gone, then yes, it comes down to a Euro big or Leonard/Morris. Montiejunas will be better than Bargnani. He's a better passer, he's quicker (which isn't asking much), and if he can get stronger and play center he could be great. The question is his motor, aggressiveness and willingness to rebound. He's been playing on cruise control in the Euro league.

The Hakeem Rockets are the model for almost all the current NBA success. Line up three or four 3 pt shooters, plant one guy in the post and away you go. I hope the Jazz will learn from it (15 years later), the 3pt shot is part of the game.

If Monti can hit a 3pt shot then great, if he is AK pt 2, the jazz had better pass.

I doubt the Jazz have the chance to find Hakeem, per se, but someone like, say, Deron Williams with an actual good and well-rounded team around him. Hakeem is one of the most underrated players in the game and that's not to say he's forgotten. But I put him in the top-5 of all-time Cs, maybe even top-3. Kareem/Bill Russell, then Hakeem probably. If the Jazz can get a Hakeem, start planning your championship parties.

The Draft Lottery is not at half time of the Bulls-Heat game. The Bulls and Heat don't play again until Wednesday because Oprah has the United Center in Chicago on Monday and Tuesday night. I think that the lottery is being held before Game 1 of the Mavericks-Thunder WCF series that starts on Tuesday.

Today's Draft Express also projects Walker 3rd, Valanciunas 4th, and Kanter slipping to 8. I wouldn't read too much into it.

These draft sites at this time of year pretty much change them every day just to get people to visit everyday for the ad revenue. So yeah would not read much into it.

Yeah, pappy's right, the lottery is Tuesday @ 6:30pm Utah time.

I'm leaning toward Bismack. The Jazz NEED a defensive presence inside badly. On my draft board Donatas comes after Bismack and Kanter.

But I'm not confident in any of the prospects this year. But Bismack's upside is more what the Jazz need than anyone else's (except Kanter might be too good to pass up, I'm just not sure about Dwill2 at the 3, and Irving - well, I'm pretty sure he'll be a stud).

To tell the truth, at this moment I don't know who I'd prefer out of those 4. That's right - out of Bismack, Kanter, Dwill2, and Irving.

Here's a question: if the Jazz were to land Derrick Williams and Jimmer, do you think that they would consider re-instituting the Rocky Mountain Review? We would likely have the best summer league team in Jazz history (PG: Fredette, SG: Gordon Hayward, SF/PF: Derrick Williams/Jeremy Evans, C: Derrick Favors). I know I would want tickets.

Favors cant be a defensive stopper?

Problem wasn't local interest and ticket sales. For some reason all the NBA coaches, scouts, and staff wanted to go to Vegas instead of hanging out in SLC.

Maybe if they moved the games from SLCC to downtown, then all the players would have somewhere to hang out?
