2011 draft.....

Ok so in that case hope Derrick Williams of Arizona has a quick and/or bad tourney, same with Barnes along with Irving and maybe Sullinger especially if we trade Millsap before or during the draft.

Its a good thing Alec Burks team (Colorado) got snubbed from the tourney. I think he could be a solid pick for 11-14

The funny thing about the draft is, after the next two weeks, the lottery picks will be completely different. Remember Hayward? Roy? He was supposed to go in the low 20's to the Jazz, then the NCAA Tourney happened and he went top 5. My bet is that Nolan Smith plays himself into the top 10. If Duke makes a deep run, he makes a ton of money. Jimmer is another example. If BYU loses in the first week, he probably falls out of the lottery. If they lose in the second week, he probably goes late lottery. If Jimmer were somehow able to carry his team to the final four, some dumb team would get caught up in the hype and take him early. I will seriously start looking at all of this after the next two weeks happen.

From a non buy fan/not from Utah prospective I just want to say that the rest of the nation loves the guy. He is the only superstar in the NCAA. Is he really just not going to translate? I have not seen enough, but what ihave seen is Stephen curry redux. If he even makes it to the second pick, would he really not be worth it? I agree with green though. He makes it to even elite eight and he will be a top 10 lock, maybe higher.

Definitely. I have seen enough of him to say he is going to be good. He is a very good all around player. I think he will rise into the top 10 in the combine.

Shooting range - he is unmatched. The questions are: Can he defend anyone? Can he play in a system where he isn't the focal point? And finally, how will he perform when guarded by players that are better than anyone he has faced all year? Dropping 50 on NM and playing against NBA backups are two completely different games. The tourney will help answer that question. If he struggles, he is in a lot of trouble.

Fredette's game will have to adapt in the Pros. Some of his moves are NBA ready and some aren't. I see Fredette as a good player in the League but not a great one.

Brandon Knight Revisted

I spent some time reviewing every that is known about Brandon Knight.

He is a good athlete and a big guard at 6'3" or 6'4" that can shoot the ball. He isn't a world class finisher like Westbrook or Rose. He is a very coachable kid. There are questions about his ability to pass in the ball in Kentucky's system. But that system isn't conducisive to assist stats.

Assuming we don't make the playoffs, I would like him a lot with our 1st round pick. (Not NJ's).

I like Nolan Smith better they are the same size and combo gards. Smith is a better playmaker. Knight is somewhat of a chucker. Smith has the intangibles to be a good leader with a lot of tenacity, something that is seriously lacking on this team. The main reason the Jazz should draft him over knight is and I can't stress this enough HE CARES ABOUT DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing about Nolan Smith is that he is a senior so what you see is basically what you will get. On the other hand Knight was one of the top high school recruits along with Harrison Barnes. Considering his stats are not far off Smith's already being a freshman, Knight has much more upside and can become a star. That's what you look for in a lottery pick.

Which is why we get so many busted picks.
A pick based on potential is risky, you can hit it out of the park... but there are good odds you hit into a 6-4-3 doubleplay.
(I can do this now because wint..... spring training has started.)
It's like playing the stock market.... it's like playing roulette.... it's like a box of chocolates..... it's like picking your nose.

The Jazz should draft Derrick Williams and give him jersey #8. He would immediately be the leader in jerseys worn in Utah.

That would be just to confusing. Does this DWill have any horrible tats as well to identify him?

Ford's take on Brandon Knight:

Drew (Wichita, KS)

With 2-3 solid tournament games, do you see Brandon Knight as a lottery pick? It seems like he would lean towards leaving anyway since its a weak draft, and arguably the best HS PG is coming to UK next season...

Chad Ford (1:48 PM)

Knight has had an interesting journey. Scouts were high on him coming out of high school, cooled off a bit early when he struggled to really run the team. Lately he's been better and in the past week I've heard scouts refer to him as a potential lottery pick again. He's a tweener, but his size, shooting ability and defense have scouts convinced he could probably play both positions at the next level. Probably goes somewhere between 10 and 20.

An interesting read on this guy Kenneth Faried from Chad Ford's chat today:

JR (Chicago)

In the Simmons podcast, you compared Kenneth Faried to Dennis Rodman and stated that Faried could sneak into the lottery. (I agree with this assessment). As a GM, if you knew that Faried would be the next Dennis Rodman (i.e. a perenniel rebounding leader), would you pick him No. 1 overall considering that this class is not top heavy? I think an argument could be made that it wouldn't be a bad pick.

Chad Ford (1:44 PM)

He's not going No. 1 overall. Rightly or wrongly, NBA GMs won't take a guy No. 1 just based on defensive ability (this isn't the NFL). In the high lottery, they really want guys who can excel at both ends. But I'm a huge Faried fan. Have been for the last two years. His rebounding numbers are extraordinary. But it's his motor, length and athleticism combined with his rebounding ability that make him special. I'm not sure he'll be a good offensive player in the NBA, but he can help a lot of teams. I'd take him in the lottery, most NBA GMs have him in the mid to late first.

This looks like a guy we can use given our rebounding woes. I would still prefer to have Millsap off the bench since he's really good at it, but in case he's not happy like Bell and gets traded, Faried may be a good replacement.

Just looked up his stats: 17.6ppg, 14.5rpg, 2spg, 2.4bpg... quite impressive even for college...

he sounds like a nice guy to have on your team, but, from what I can see, I agree with the 20-or-later projections. His minutes would overlap heavily with Evans -- another player with intangibles and no consistent offensive game.

Let's think like the Spurs for a minute: they wouldn't take this player unless he somehow fell to them in the late first round (where they always manage to be picking) or the early second. That's because the utility of a shooter or creator far surpasses the utility of a tweener/energy guy.

so, even if he ends up being awesome at what he does, I'd rather the Jazz draft somebody who can shoot the damn ball before they go for this guy. That's just where we are at right now.

I agree, but if you're talking about Jimmer, give me Faried 8 days out of 7.

naw, I wasn't talking about Jimmer.

Since I'm trying to 'draft like the Spurs', I don't imagine I would take Jimmer until the early second round.... just behind the likes of Faried.
