What's new

2014 College Football

The notion that the four teams must in essence be conference champions is absolutely stupid. It's really pretty simple. Pick the best four teams.

Thriller, serious question:

If the Big 12 expands without BYU, what would you like to see BYU do? My guess is playing in the MWC or AAC has got to be better than staying Indy.
Yep.

Independence means the season is over after a loss. It's lame.

At least usu boise state ect still have something to play for

Ideally yes.

What's ideal rarely happens however and I noticed that every team in the playoffs also won a p5 conference championship.

I dont think it's coincidence that the one p5 conference without a championship game was left out

If this guy couldn't foresee that this would be an issue, he shouldn't be their commissioner. This coupled with everything else I've heard about him pretty much supports the idea that he's a complete bumbling moron.
Exactly.
Pretty much all of us knew that the committee was going to go with the p5 conference champions before this season even started.

That's why there was so much talk about big 12 needing to expand LAST SUMMER..... BEFORE THE SEASON EVEN STARTED

Shame on the Big 12 commissioner for acting like this blindsided them. This was something even us fans saw coming from a mile away.

Btw, I think it's absolute ********* that Boise State is going to the Fiesta Bowl. There, just wanted to get that off my chest.

Agreed. Makes no sense at all.

It blows we got Colorado State in the Vegas Bowl. That WSU loss really bit us in the ***.

Boise going to the Fiesta Bowl is laughable.

Still it was a VERY successful season and at least the bowl is close, in a warm city, with lots of attractions and things to do.
And like ugli said, the bball team well be there at the same time so ute fans get a two for one.
It could be alot worse. (The last two years for example.)

If I were a ute fan I would definitely go to the game and be very excited about it.

Well, duh, it's not the same thing. That's why people don't like it. Everyone plays everyone so that way they can have a 'true' champion. Yes, they have teams that share titles. The conference really doesn't care about making things 'simpler' for the playoff committee. That's just how they view things.

The BIG 12 named Baylor and TCU co-champions:/

Exactly.

IMO, BYU needs to stop fretting over their crappy TV station. The goal needs to be Big 12 or MWC. Even the other sports would benefit from rejoining the MWC. IMO, if this happens, it will be a huge blow to BYU... A potential death knell to competing in sports.

From what I've heard there's a rift in between the powers that be at BYU and the athletic department. For as much **** as Bronco gets for being a robot, he's been pretty clear in his opinion of getting into a conference. From what I've heard, Holmoe and Rose feel the same way (but at much more subtle about it). It wouldn't surprise me honestly to see Bronco leave for Oregon St. In part, due to BYU's current Independent status.

I think BYU really needs to decide what the hell they want. The eggheads on top have "all the answers" and don't realize that no one gives a damn about some crappy station. "Spreading the word" will be far more effective if they join a conference. BYU TV is a disaster.

I don't think that their TV station would be an issue for the Big 12. The Big 12 schools all retain their rights to 3rd tier games(Longhorn Network). I think if they expand it will be BYU and Cinci.

BYU would bring the most money of the available schools.

There is no way the BIG 12 steals anybody from the BIG 10. They are about to go into new TV negotiations, the last big Sports TV contract of the decade. They are going to make a bundle. It's more likely that the BIG ten would steal 2 more Big 12 teams then them losing any.

Lol bad time to misspeak there. Anyway, qsh summed up my feelings in his post. The goal should be to pick the four best teams, regardless of whether or not they won a conference championship game. I think the committee operated under the same idea, since that is what they are supposed to do. I guess, I'm just surprised at how many people think otherwise, and also of those that think winning a conference championship game should be required of all participants. That's all.

Fwiw I don't think winning a conference championship should be required.
I also don't think it IS required.

I do believe that conference championship games are a very big determining factor in the decision the committee makes

Can someone help me out here too? I'm 39 years old and could swear I remember K State losing to Texas A&M in the Big 12 Championship game when the latter had Dat Nguyen. Had K State won, they would've been in the National Title game. At least that's how I remember it from about 18 or so years ago. But there is no Big 12 title game so???

The Big 12 had a championship game when they still had 12 teams. Once they went down to 10, no more title game.

And Lazy D, I wanna try this one more time: nobody that I can see in here is saying you HAVE to win a conference title game to be considered one of the top 4. It just so happens that when a team gets that 13th game against another team that more times than not will also be highly ranked, it really helps add to the resume of being top 4 worthy.

Had TCU beaten Baylor and finished undefeated, odds are that they would have been chosen for the playoffs. However, they lost and while they were stuck playing a bad Iowa State team, the committee got to further evaluate the other teams against the top competition in their respective conferences. The committee feels like they did just what you're talking about: put the 4 best in. It just so happens, those conferences title games helped shape their opinion.
