2016-17 NBA PLAYOFFS THREAD

With Gobert and Hayward the Jazz are going to win between 50-60 games a year and pick in the mid to late 20's every season. Their chances of finding the 3rd piece of the Hayward/Gobert pie in that range is slim. Our chance of getting better increase exponentially under a no draft free agent rookie system but you say no just because it helps the Lakers/Knicks also? But you are OK with teams not giving a **** about winning all year just so they can draft high and suck *** again the next year? You want to reward the Kings for being incompetent every year? Why? How does that make the NBA better?

I think Cy is starting to lose his marbles, guys... he has abandoned all logic... best to just let him be.

Please explain to me how no draft hurts Utah and how a draft helps Utah.

Please tell me.

Then explain to me how it hurts/helps the NBA.

You are defending the draft when the only thing it does is encourage tanking and rewards bad teams. So far your only response has been "Wah it helps the big market teams wah wah wah"

IT would just be more interesting to hear a full critique of the idea and not just "Oh my god the Lakers and Knicks will have an advantage". Do people really think every prospect in this draft would go to the Knicks when their star player doesnt even want to be on the Knicks?

Take this discussion the the right forum please. This is the PLAYOFFS thread.

It's on topic. Most of the playoff talk has been about parity and lack there of and my talks have been about improving parity at the top half of the NBA.

Not really on topic as it isn't specifically about any current games and more about the state of the league. Should be in the nba thread in general sports forum.

Because Utah has consistently struggled to bring in quality FAs. Especially young players that have a bad perception about living in Utah. If rookies chose their team Utah would be low on the list of teams chosen and we would have to overpay to get kids to come here like most small markets would have to. Big markets and hometowns of kids have an advantage. Lots of kids make friends as well early and would try and team up early as well to make super teams.

Have the Jazz struggled to brig in quality FAs? What teams have huge track records for attracting free agents? The Lakers getting Luol Deng and Mozgov? The Knicks getting Courtney Lee? The Jazz beat both those teams in quality this past year getting Joe Johnson. Most young FA's don't leave their original team because they are restricted, then if they are really good, they usually stick with their team because they can pay the most or they leave to the top contender to form a super team. In recent memory the All-Star caliber players who have switched teams in recent years via FA are Wade, Lebron, KD, and Aldridge. I'm probably missing someone, but none of those moves were based on market size. Lebron went home, KD went to the best contender, Aldridge went to a quality franchise to win, and Wade went to Chicago because they offered the most money and is his hometown. Joe Johnson could reasonably be put in the same tier as Wade this year and he chose Utah (actually I think most would agree JJ was the better/more impactful player this year).

The pool of UFA is usually really small in terms of quality, and most of them stay on their original teams. There isn't that much FA movement in the NBA. The needs and desires of rookies is going to be much different than NBA veterans. Teams making rookie "super teams" doesnt really worry me at all. I dont think most NBA teams would want to do that and I dont think it would be a good situation for most rookies and would have a low success rate in terms of winning in immediate and in the future (though I would love to see some team try that, it would be a cool experiment and a benefit of the system).

I think people are really undervaluing the reputation the Jazz have among agents in terms of player development and how big a role that would play in getting rookie free agents. At the end of the day, the Jazz have a better chance at getting a top rookie under a no draft system than they do under a draft system while having Gobert/Hayward on the team. The fear of the big markets is way overplayed. Yes it will help them, but it would really help the Jazz also.

But thank you for the more thought out response than what others have said.

Also, I think there could be some kind of restrictions on this. Like only being able to offer so much $$$ to rookies if you are over the salary cap. Restricting how many rookies you can sign in a given year (like now each team gets 2 picks for a total of 60 picks, keep that but now it's 2 player signing vouchers that be traded. After the rookie signing period any player who doesnt get signed can only be signed for the rookie minimum.) Something like that.

I think the Jazz would have a solid chance at getting Frank Ntilikina if it was a free agent system. He fits the team perfectly and there is the French connection with Rudy.

Enes Kanter? Alec Burks? Trey Burke? Dante Exum? Trey Lyles?

If I was a young player and saw that I wouldn't want to go anywhere near Utah. I love the Jazz but they have sucked in terms of developing players drafted in the lottery.

Enes Kanter earned a max contract under the development Utah sent him through. They also completely complied with him when he asked for a trade.

Alec Burks earned a 40 million dollar contract under the development Utah sent him through.

Trey Burke just sucks ***, anyone can see that. It had nothing to do with development. Again, they willing traded him when he wanted a trade.

Dante/Lyles, sure. They have been failures so far, but the successes outweigh the failures ATM.

They took Gobert from the 27th pick to a DPOY and 1st Team All-NBA contender.

They took Hayward from a skinny mid-major darling to an All-Star who is going to get a 30+ million a year contract.

They turned George Hill from an Indiana system that underutilized him and turned him into a PG that is going to get a major contract.

They took Joe Ingles from a guy no one even knew could be a NBA player to a guy who is going to get 10+ million a year.

Plus the Jazz have had two European players list Utah as a top destination for themselves next year, Motiejunas and Teodosic. Maybe the Jazz would clean up with top European prospects?

How can Lithunia, Greece, Spain and Serbia assemble a pretty skilled team using homegrown players who are loyal to the local country but Utah as state can't? Is the CBA prohibiting Utah Jazz to have training camps all over the Utah a la similar to soccer clubs in Europe?

Yes there are currently things prohibiting teams from doing that. Also Utah doesn't product enough high level basketball players to compete with other areas in the USA.

How many kids coming out of college are going to CHOOSE to go spend there early 20's in Utah???

You'd be hoping for a lot of home grown white boys or internationals. Good luck with that.
