Okay, this is going to get a little crazy and probably unrealistic. It also might show how little I know about the cap but here is my pipe dream for a championship:
If we waive Diaw and trade Burks before FA begins then what could we get the cap down to before trying to re-sign Hayward? It seems to me it would be around 72m with Haywards cap hold of 16m?
If it was at 72 million then we could sign another big FA (around 29 million available) before trying retaining Hayward, Hill and/or Ingles. Although I am not cap expert. I assume we could clear up more room if we really needed to by trading other player.
This would take taking to Hayward and the others and telling them we want to retain them but need to use our cap space to sign such and such player first.
We could trade Favors, Hood and maybe 2 late first round picks for Paul George. Then we could waive Diaw and dump burks to a team with room to absorb him. If we had to we could give away a late first. Then we could have space to go after Lowry, Griffin, CP3, Gallo, Millsap or someone else. Then we retain Hayward. Then we would have to fill out the roster with low end FAs/Picks. This all seems very unlikely but a possibility.
We could have this Roster:
Exum, Dwill, Neto
Paul George, Draft Pick/FA/Exum
Hayward/JJ/FA/Pick
Blake Griffin/Lyles/Bolmoby
Gobert/FA/Draft Pick
That roster is ~110m and I think competes for a title. I think that roster or some variation of it swapping PG for Butler or someone else and swapping Griffin for Lowry/CP3 or someone else could beat the Warriors even if they retain Durant.
The big if is the trade and convincing a FA to come here. If we some how traded for Paul George during the draft on June 22nd and made the other trades. I think come July 1st we could convince a big name player to join Gobert and Paul George and easily get Hayward to re-sign to that team. That would give us a big 4.
Too unrealistic? Nah we could pull off some crazy moves if the FO wants to really go all out and try. The big problem could be trading for Paul George and then no FA signs. Then PG leaves the next year. Even worse if Hayward doesnt re-sign for some reason. Although I dont think you make this kind of move without some sort of wink wink with Hayward. I think the Franchise could go the safe route and maybe break through or at least be a really good team but they could swing for the fences next season.
