2020 NBA trade deadline discussion

My takes from the pod...

- They haven't watched enough Sacramento... Holmes would absolutely be an upgrade and would be great if he stayed disciplined.
- We are going to clear a roster spot and sign Udoh when he is done in China... guys that go to China are basically saying that they are going to get a big check there and then come back to the NBA. I think we are the landing spot for him. I think he cause some of the same issues Ed did on offense but not to such a degree that it kills us... we also have JC and Conley with DM or Ingles in that group now so less need for the role man to do much. He will give us the rim protection we need and can guard on the perimeter... we will be fine with him on the court for 10 minutes.
- I don't expect much by way of trade to come down the pipeline. Maybe a minor deal.
Last regular season game appears to be March 12. Not sure how they do their playoffs.

I believe China lengthened their season this year. Not necessarily in games played, but they spaced it out more.

I just checked the rule... as long as we sign him by the last day of the regular season, so April 15thish then he is playoff eligible. If he was under contract with another NBA team he would need to be released by March 1st. So I'm sure we are good. He's been in the system so I'm sure he'd pick it up in a couple weeks. We'd know with TB by then too or if buyouts or the trade deadline netted us something good...

I think he is the front office's plan B and they may bring him in regardless as insurance.

I've been a huge Udoh homer. Had been saying he could be our primary backup for a while (as long as we had a decent offensive four). Udoh and Niang may be an okay tandem. Not in the playoffs much, but they'll complement more.

It would be cool to see him in meaningful minutes and he should be in a rhythm with all the pt he's getting in China... not sure another team brings him in with 2 weeks notice before the playoffs.

The issue with Niang and Bradley is that they do some things at a high level that could be valuable... I think Niang's skill is more translatable in the playoffs and TB's deficiencies are more critical because of his position.

In the playoffs I hope the defensive gameplan varies a bit and Udoh is a nice option to have on switches plus he protects the rim. I'm going to sleep good at night knowing he's coming (even if he isn't).

Borrowing a meme I used in a game thread a couple years ago...

Udoh is on cameo and you better believe I am going to purchase TF out of that if he signs.

I'll venmo you and go 50/50 on that one.

The guy was really good two years ago... so good we were playing him with Rudy and Favs at times because we wanted him on the floor... our defense really didn't slip much at all with him on the court. Last year he really only got garbage time minutes. Looking back... we should have given Ed's money to Ekpe.

I don’t know if it’s possible to go back and negotiate new pick protections on a pick already conveyed, but that could be a way to make our 1st owed to the Grizzlies convey earlier and making a 1st tradable earlier than 2024 if that is a thing that is allowed. Hypothetically

I believe that is possible. FWIW.

Last year the CBA finals went into May.

It is possible to trade a pick that incorporates the terms of the other picks you owe. Renegotiating the terms on another pick is possible but very unlikely.

I think we are bargain basement hunting basically this trade deadline. The player(s) would have to be so perfect to give up an unprotected pick that far in the future... there aren't many I can even think of.

I think the guys in our market are the Boguts, Udohs, and Vonleh's. And I'm cool with all.

Bogut might be good in the right matchup... he sets the meanest and most illegal screens that almost never get called and is a good passer... with the bench unit those guys are going to shoot most of the time anyway so that might be all we need from the screen setter.

Between Udoh and Bogut I would prefer Udoh because he provides a good defensive look against big/athletic forwards (AD & Giannis). That being said, I don't see the Jazz taking 4 centers into the playoffs, so first we would need to move Davis or Tony.

I'm still waiting for the Cleveland Phoenix Kevin Love trade... like it makes way too much sense not to happen. If Cleveland demands a first (they shouldn't) then maybe it doesn't get done. They should just fold and take expirings and seconds to get off of his money long term. Dude gets hurt and they won't be able to move it period. Phoenix won't do better with their cap space and will need to renounce Dario and Baynes to use space anyway.

I like where this is headed.

It would be nice to send out Davis in any scenario. Buyout guys or the Udoh/Bogut class would be nice because we could conceivably hold onto TB. I’m fine trading him, but he’s shown enough that it would be nice to keep him around for depth and see if he can address the real issues he has either between now and the playoffs or in coming years. For better or worse, he is practically a rookie, after all.

it’s worth noting that the big stage wouldn’t bother him one bit given his particular experience. Getting someone with his kind of experience that is even worth a roster spot is probably a win if a championship is a serious, realistic proposition.

I want to note that I’m on the record with my distaste for his ignorant political views but it’s not a deal-breaker for me.

Agree... looking at all the cap space the **** teams will have... I don't think it would cost much to dump Davis if need be next year. We should use MLE regardless of Davis/Bradley... teams like Atlanta/Cleveland/NY likely need solid vets and may take Ed's deal for a low value second round pick. If Cleveland dumps Love they have infinity space next year and there just aren't enough young good free agents out there. Might even just dump him by sending out his salary with some cash.

If Whiteside catches Hood's chronic diarrhea germ and is out I bet the Blazers would consider trading for Davis.
I think they’re kinda strapped on options to send out salary for at this point to be able to take back David’ contract.
