2020 NBA trade deadline discussion

Take Niang off the floor and replace him with a tough, physical defensive player who moves the ball on offense, and the defense might work. It isn't worth having Niang kill our defense for the few 3pt shots he takes, when Mitchell or Clarkson can take those shots. I think we probably have to replace both Ed and Georges in that lineup.
the issue with niang is that he is just way too slow in all aspects of basketball. even his release is too slow and easy to guard once his opponents start paying attention to him.

not hard to tell the difference between his stroke and that of Duncan Robinson, Bertans... shooters gotta be able to put up shots in a hurry. niang slows us down on both ends significantly with his mere presence on the floor.

just way too much slowness, un-athleticism and smallness on this team right now. quin loves high IQs and discipline, but bringing a few long athletes does not contradict such philosophy. it will only help us become a even more well-rounded team on both ends. just imagine how good we would be having a 6'10 long forward like Christian Wood or jerami grant right next to Rudy. we'd be crazy good on defense. heck, even thon maker would help a great deal.

I like Christian Wood. That's the kind of player we need. A long, bouncy energy big who can take a couple dribbles and get on the rim.

I seriously can't see how George has gotten the burn he has. Other than the 3 he brings nothing. Often less than nothing. Don't get it.
he is also spot-up only with little to zero off-ball movement. simply way too easy to guard. shooters better than him come out every year. like actual ones who can change the whole dynamics of a team's offense. just watch some highlights of duncan robinson and you can see how he force his opponents to shift and switch in order to stop him. whereas niang's basically static 80% of the time

i see some star potential in the dude. the last guy we signed from detroit is no one other than memo okur. i want us to sign guys who are up and coming and with a chip on their shoulder. not some washed "vets" who are just collecting paycheck and going through the motion.

I'm looking back at the Denver game. With about 2.5 mins. left in the 3rd quarter, the Jazz led by 4 pts.
Rudy Gobert goes out of the game. The line up is Mudiay/Mitchell/Clarkson/Niang/Davis.
Denver closes the 3rd quarter on a 10-0 run in 2.5 mins.
Denver then starts the 4th quarter with a 4-0 run. Ed Davis has committed three shooting fouls in 3.5 mins of game time to give up 6 pts at the foul line.
Jazz are now down by 10.
The Jazz give up a 14-0 run during the 4.5 mins when Gobert takes a brief rest and lose control of the game.
Denver wins by 6 points.

Ed brings zero offense and zero defense to the table.
You can maybe hide Niang on the floor, but you can't hide Ed when he's at the center of your offense and defense.
We simply cannot afford to play Ed. At all.

Now maybe part of the problem is that our guards are undersized and they can't keep guys in front of them. Obviously Niang isn't going to keep guys in front of him. But if we're going to play small guards who like to dribble and score, we had better play a big who can help cover up for it.

This is why I keep bringing up Nerlens Noel.

We need a strong defensive 5 off of our bench to solidify our rotations. Bogey and Niang provide value offensively at the 4 but their defense has limitations. We know that our perimeter defense can be better than it's been recently because we've seen this group be better. But at the same time our defensive scheme is to allow a drive before allowing a good look for 3 and it requires a defensive center to disrupt once the drive comes. Davis and Bradley haven't been able to do the job. We need a backup who can be a lesser version of him defensively while also maybe bringing a few different elements Rudy doesn't.

He's too slow. He is big though.
I know he's slow as a freight train but he has six fouls and the Jazz wouldn't have to alter their system as much when Rudy sits. Plus if he made about three of his fouls really hard, there would be an intimidation factor.

It's quick enough. Per36 he got 7.3 attempts up last year and 8.1 this year.

This is a big L trade for Houston. Trading Capela and then getting RoCo in return. But this might be a good thing for the Jazz, Rudy always seemed to struggle against Capela for some reason.
RoCo is fine, but over-rated... he’s not the shooter that he’s made out to be... Capela on the lob and guarding in space was an issue for us. Tucker is cool but we can game plan around it when we see them in the playoffs... I’m cool with this.
