2023 NBA Draft Megathread

prosper averaged .1 bpg (blocked 5 shots all season), only 4.7 rebs as a 6'8" elite athlete, and .7 assists as a wing (24 assists all season). negative assist/to ratio. due to his athleticism, he has some potential. but he's a second round prospect, maybe you take a flier on him at 28. but he's a workout warrior with some potential at this point.
well, I don't agree despite the college stats are average at best for sure. Projections are elite defender with a decent stealth handle though. He showed it a little here and there outside of the testing phase this month, and even was confident enough to shut it down. I think it looks like the ww label you and many others are throwing darts at might mean somebody steals him if he really does fall to the 2.
Did a really nice job outside of the regiments ss had him in of what I saw of the combine. I MIGHT consider taking a gamble on his upside at 16, over a lot of other options that have a better stat line against nobodies.
But ultimately would rather hope he is there at 28 despite the odds of that actually being far less than they were this time 6 months ago.

Decided to see what all the fuss is about. Watching full game of GG Jackson(vs Alabama)...

edit1: Dammit... I see it... I see the appeal...

...at the same time... I see the rawness too...

edit2:Urgh.... I think I'd take him at 16... WIth the absolute acknowledgement that he might be a complete bust and be out of the league by the end of his rookie deal. I just... don't think you get this type of talent that often outside the lottery. You owe it to your coaches to give them that ball of clay and see what they can mold out of it. And I think I will disagree with @KqWIN here - I think you HAVE TO at least try to develop his on-ball game. Yes, it's not efficient and it's all over the place right now. But there is more talent there than pretty much any of the on-ball non-guards in this draft(maybe except for Miller).

edit3: I love his reactions to his teammates scoring. He seems invested in their success too...

I actually just skipped through that Bama game myself. It was a good game for him no doubt, also one of his best games and still a game where you look at the box score and find him not super efficient. But I get it, it’s hard to shake the “look” of these baskets even if we know he’s very bad at making them as a whole.

I understand why people call it “talent”. He does things that others cannot and they are the “hard” things. The reason why I don’t consider him a big talent is that he cannot leverage his ability to get high percentage looks. So while he can do some cool **** that looks great when it goes in (it does not go in often”, he plays a game that is a tough living in the NBA.

My idea of talent is skewed towards what wins games and less about what others can and cannot do. Unique? Yes. Talent? Not for me. I would be more inclined to say someone like Brice Sensabaugh is more “talented” in the scoring realm.

I’m open to the idea I could be wrong about his scoring. Maybe he is good enough to where he can be an initiator type in the NBA….the rest of his game is like an F- for the NBA level. So while I don’t really believe in him as an on ball scorer (because he was very bad at it), I also think the focus of his development should be the other things because he is so far from the baseline ability to get on an NBA court and help a team win.

There are only a handful of guys who play the way he does in the NBA and are good enough to do it….even less if you take the total count of guys who just forgot playing defense and passing. It’s just an infinitely easier path for him to go another route with his development. IMO he needs to be like Jaden and establish a role first before even thinking about him as a high usage bucket getter.

GG has talent. To me, he will limit a teams ceiling with his decision making/shot selection. Don’t see the creativity or ball movement with him. Some of that could be his South Carolina roster…..so likely an unfair judgement but look at Steph curry with Davidson. Those players were garbage and he made them all better. I question his effort on both ends. Would take him with our 3rd pick if still there….maybe. Not sure his comparable although im sure people have listed dozens. seems like Marcus Morris like player to me, which I don’t care for his game.

There is talent there even in the way you describe it. But I agree, he's not a winning player right now and he might not be for a while. I agree that easier path for his development is to focus on off-ball things. But I also think this would be such a waste. IMO if you are drafting him to be a big 3 and D project, he should probably not be a 1st round pick. IMO if you draft him 9 or 16 you MUST try to develop his overall game... every aspect of it. And in some areas this would actually mean eliminating some of the shots he takes right now... but in others... I actually WANT to see him develop those aspects of his game. But he won't be helping you win games for a season or two most probably.

That's why I said somewhere above that if you take him you have to be willing to sacrifice... in some cases sacrifice winning in order to give him opportunities to iron out some of his skills. BTW... he actually had some nice passes in that game. He had a great outlet pass in transition, he had a nice assist in the PnR... He had some lazy passes too that got intercepted. In general nothing in his game is consistent, even in this game he had a great first half and very mediocre second half.

I'm not worried about the investment into his development in terms of wins and losses. It's more about the sheer amount of development needed as an overall player. The development to go from awful on ball player to passable in the NBA is gigantic, but lets say he can do that. Can he also go from awful to passable as a defender, passer, bbiq? All of this at the same time? Being a go to guy is already the hardest thing to do in the NBA. He's got to scale that back to have a chance IMO. That doesn't mean he's standing in the corner every player, but I think his highest outcomes are more like Tobias Harris where he's good as a secondary player who can mix in some initiator stuff. That's not what others see has his ceiling or a high end outcome for him, but I the amount of development it would take for him to get to that level as an overall player is aa ton.

And I know certain people will scoff at this, but I am not swayed a few nice passes and pullup mid range shots. The numbers do matter, and he is amongst the worst in the entire class at these things. IIRC he has a couple really good mid range shots (a pullup and turnaround fadeway)+ a nice PnR pass all in the first few minutes. It's eyepopping and really intriguing, but when I stack that up against his actual results....yeah I'm not convinced.

If you want a decent upside swing at #16 I think Whitehead, Miller, Bilal are better swing for the fences moves than GG. Miller has a high floor as he can be an energy big off the bench in most median outcomes imo.

The word on the street seems to be that Jazz may not be interested in GG. Look for him to go to a team like OKC, Toronto, Miami or LAC. Bilal Coulibaly sounds like he might be in play for the Jazz though.

I could see the Jazz drafting Dariq Whitehead at #16, barring a medical red flag. I just have no idea what the Jazz's draft strategy is. This is the first time the new regime has the freedom to attack the draft.

I can understand why a team wouldn't want to deal with that type of project.

The next one I will watch full game of is probably Whitehead... I'm very intrigued by him. And I will try to pick an early game before he got injured.

I'd add Keyonte to that group, specifically as a high end scorer. He was a decent off the dribble shooter, shows flashes as a passer, is able to get to the FT line, is a more physical player on both ends, and can also scale down into a bomber role if it doesn't pan out. I can see him being a big time initiator because of his off the dribble 3 + ability to draw fouls at the basket. Probably ends up more like Clarkson or Beasley, but he checks a lot of the boxes in terms of being an offensive engine. You get some crazy shots and highlights that very few in this class can make, but his efficiency and passing isn't that bad.

Bilas is the best bet at #16. I just don't think he will be there.

You will be bored as hell. Whitehead it’s about do you believe the HS tape over his one injured year at Duke. His shooting improvement is nice and if you layer that on top of the guy he was in HS then you have something.

That’s fair too… I just think if we want to yolo and swing it doesn’t necessarily mean you swing on a prospect like GG. I really think if he works it will be as a second draft guy once he’s flamed out or close to it.

I think Bilal is going to be there at 16. Maybe Toronto takes him but I think Miller ends up going to OKC or Toronto and I could see Keyonte going to Toronto as well. I don’t think nba GMs are as big on Bilal as you think. I think there is a 60-70% chance he is there still.

Be careful. Ainge is the master of smokescreens. We're only a few months from him leaking the Jazz had no interest in RJ Barrett and that Bogey was worth an unprotected first.
