2024 NBA Draft Mega Thread

The easiest way to tell if I a guy has the potential to be a star….well it’s the obvious ones. But the obvious ones are being drafted at the very top. After that, we have guys that look the part but aren’t very good and guys that are very good but don’t look the part. Everything in between, of course. When it comes to looking at who has high potential….I think we are wayyyy to tilted towards the first group.

Like I said, most for most great players, it was obvious. But there are still a lot of great players who weren’t the tallest, youngest, most athletic, insert any typical “high potential” attribute.

Shep has a lot of things going for him. Maybe he tops out as TJ McConnell with a jumper but he plays so far within his role on his team that its tough to get a read on other things he could be doing that may open up for him.

Also, Kentucky guard.

Yeah, but all these Kentucky guards who later flourished had scoring mentalities that were diminished in Kentucky as they tried to fit into loaded teams.

I dont think Sheppard really fits the conventional "Kentucky Guard" thing.

All that said, still definitely a top 6 pick.

Malik Dia's usage is so insane. 39% for a high post player. Dude is definitely a blackhole, but a talented blackhole.

He's like 3 role players combined that I love. TJ's play making with Seth Curry's shooting and Pat Bev's defense. What does that all add up to? IDK, but he wouldn't be the first Kentucky player reduced to a smaller role when he could have done more. It's kind of a trap to compare draft prospects to unique players....but it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up FVVish. Shep is just extremely good at very important things.

Better role players exist in the NBA that you'd get through trading.
Maybe and maybe not. Odds are you aren't getting one though at a lower cost controlled price than hitting on a role player in the draft. What role players do you have in mind that could be available through a trade?

I disagree but haven't watched a ton. Shep may not be able to put up big numbers but he comes down and looks to get the ball to Rob and let him cook. He may just know himself but I don't see him running a ton of actions. Seems to get his in secondary stuff.

When guys like him get a ton of steals I think its about BBIQ and instincts and I wonder how those carryover. He may not explode as a scorer but I think being labeled just a role player is in part because he is really buying into his role and what he is supposed to do. Like I want to see what he looks like running a lot of pick and roll and reading the defense and he's not really doing that. I always thought of the Kentucky guard or Kentucky star thing as being guys buying into lesser roles because the teams are really talented.

Its like all things that are underrated when it comes to winning. May not end up being a "star" star but a role player "star" that just helps win.

I will probably have him like 5/6 on my board... bet he goes 8-12 ish in the draft. Would rather go for a Wemby or Brandon Miller or Cooper Flagg but if you can't get the star I definitely have a thing for guys that can be the 3rd or 4th most important guy on a title team.

I think the guys I'm most intrigued by are Topic, Shep, Williams, Buzelis, Dunn. Not that those are the top guys in the draft just the ones I'm most interested in now.

Right....and to be clear, I'd bet against him being an all star, but I'm betting against all NCAA prospects to be stars this cycle. There's a chance everything comes together....and I think that chance is more likely than Justin Edwards, for example, who is a guy who only looks the part.

He also has all the statistical indicators I look for that reflect high level talent. Extremely good percentage at the rim + low amount of those assisted. Decent mid range percentage reflects good touch. Godly 3FG% with a decent amount unassisted. High rebounds for a guard. Godly stocks.

Buzelis has been assssssssss lately.

Him and Holland are both shooting 22% from 3 on a little over 3 attempts per game.

Season isnt over yet, but if they continue shooting that poorly, they will be some of the worst shooting prospects of recent memory for guys who actually attempted a decent volume of 3's (probably next to the twins last year).

It's going to be wild to me if they get drafted high after we watched Leonard Miller play super well in the G to go in the 2nd round, and he's clearly, IMO, a far superior prospect than Holland or Buzelis.

I'm intrigued still, but yeah 22% is not great obvi. I loved Leonard Miller and would have him top 10 in this draft I think. It was so dumb he fell last year.

So maybe the Jazz can pick up a FRP in this draft with a trade while also conveying the pick they owe to OKC. I'm wondering what the Jazz are thinking, being just a game and a half out of the 8-seed. This road trip was supposed to show that the Jazz don't belong, and it's kind of done the opposite. Write off the Sixers game because they didn't have Embiid, but that Bucks game was solid.

The way guys like Sexton, Olynyk, Dunn and Kessler have been playing as of late, the Jazz might be a .500 team or slightly above. They're just 1 game off where they were last year at this point.
