2024 NBA Draft Mega Thread

Jake Fischer's article from yesterday. If it's true that Memphis wants front-court help, the Spurs should be confident they can trade back to 10 and get their choice of Carter, Dillingham or Topic. With the 8th pick, the Jazz would be in better range to trade up to 5 or 6.

I wouldn't be confident in anything with this draft.

Yeah, he has motor and intangibles during the game is the point

Not saying that's how he currently is, but it was what he was known for in HS.

Checks out logically because his jumper is awful despite not having any clear mechanical flaws

Reading that article, it definitely paints the picture of a guy who was super talented (physically) and was always on the best team so he won anyways. His coaches were the one's who had to adjust and deal with it because he was simply too good at that level. They weren't able to get to him and because he was good enough to win it didn't matter. The G-League is obviously where the talent caught up to him. Seems like it was an opportunity for him to really start grinding....but judging by the way he's falling I'm guessing that's not checking out and teams are not impressed by his interviews/behavior in G-League ignite.

His motor is definitely evident in the games, but he won't improve much unless he changes his mentality. I still like the combo of physically gifted + crazy motor....but this is definitely a concern.

Basically there with you. He's probably the prospect I'm the least confident in with my ranking. I think I have him 14 or 15? But yeah, could easily see him being the best player and I wouldn't laugh if Atlanta took him 1.

The draft process has me skeptical....I feel like teams were probably zereod in on this stuff and did not impress.

Having said that, one of the things I'm going to try avoid is being too harsh on a young kid's maturity. He's still 18 years old, maybe he was that overconfident/difficult player to coach....but that change won't happen overnight. If the coaching staff can get to him and he matures, that could open the door to rapid improvement that was being held back by his lack of practice.

Kind reminder that Brice Sensabaugh is 3 years younger than Dalton Knecht. Sensabaugh also projects as an equal or better shooter than Knecht coming out of college.

Not saying the Jazz can't have both, but I'm not sure Knecht gives the Jazz a whole lot they don't already have.

I made a post awhile back making a comparison of their production....it's actually pretty close. Brice was a beast in college, he fell because of his health. I think Knecht plays more of pro-style game....but it's a good reminder that scoring in the NBA is a different beast. I would have high confidence in Knecht becoming a good shooter in the NBA, but I'm not sure about his game beyond that. I'd have him last out of the 4 guys you mentioned earlier.

There might be an argument that Knecht is a 2 and Brice is a 3, but Brice's playmaking potential might make him the more interesting prospect.

Also from an article I read, can't recall form whom, it sounds like Holland is more of a game player and not a guy who really locks in during practice.
This is a concept I was thinking about earlier. With where he’s at, he’s got to learn to become a gym rat or else all that game intensity will mean nothing (or worse).

All that being said, he’s got the tools and the motor. One of the better high-potential but kinda raw prospects I can think of for that reason.

I recently had gone back to listen to the No Ceilings guys for their 2023 and 2024 Nike Hoops Summit recaps. In 2024, they were saying how refreshing it was (compared to the 2023 group) that the 2024 group took practice and defense totally seriously. They didn't name names, but in the 2023 recap, it was clear that Holland was one (maybe the main one) who was more or less blowing off the practices and that his motor only showed up when the game lights turned on.

Keep him away from Miami. If Pat gets him in the culture he becomes a monster.

If there is a Jaden McDaniels in this draft I think it’s Holland. When Jaden was coming into the league he was seen as high potential guy because of shot making ability, but he fell because he was so bad at it and had some maturity issues.

As with Jaden, I don’t think the volume scoring will amount to anything for Holland. But if you can channel that crazy/motor correctly you may come away with a really good defense. Holland will also need to find a way to survive on offense, but I don’t mind betting on physical tools + a little crazy.

A team with great culture like MIA would be ok this guy like white on rice. What does it say about a team that doesn’t think they can help him?

Damn that is a great article.
such a great article. love this:

When Holland returned to Duncanville, Peavy saw newfound leadership ability and more “alpha” in his star wing. He would still frustrate his head coach, but it was impossible to argue with the results. Duncanville may have been the best high school team in the country, and Holland was making winning plays all over the floor.

“He just doesn’t lose,” Peavy said. “I don’t know how else to say it. It would drive me crazy sometimes, but he always found a way to figure it out.”

Duncanville was winning big at every opportunity, going 62-2 during Holland’s junior and senior years. Even against national competition, Holland was simply too physical and too tenacious for other teams to contain. USA Basketball extended another invitation to play in the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup in Spain, where it would claim another gold medal. Cooper Flagg, the likely first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, led the team in the tournament’s efficiency metric. Holland was second.

Sharman White, who coached Holland to both gold medals with USA Basketball, never had any issues with Holland at practice or otherwise. He viewed him as an ultimate team player.

“He was a leader in both years,” White told SB Nation. “He did everything we asked him to do. He’s a competitor so, you know, you might see him fired up a little bit, but it wasn’t nothing out of line out. He’s always picking up his teammates.”

The path that gets Cody Williams to the Jazz:
1) ATL - Risacher
2) WAS - Sarr
3) HOU - Sheppard
4) SAS - Castle
5) DET - Buzelis
6) CHA - Clingan
7) POR - Salaun
8) SAS - Carter
9) MEM - Knecht
10) UTA - Williams

It’s hard to overstate just how bad the GLeague Ignite were last season. They were 6-44. That’s a 12% win rate which is less than 10 wins over an 82 games season. Their net rating was -14.5. Second worse was -6. They were more than double as bad as the second worst team in the league. Incredible how overmatched they were.
