Aaron Gordon, a No. 5 Pick?

Walt Perin, Pres. Of Basketball Operations, responds w/ his thoughts on Aaron Gordon

He has really, really improved his shot…He handled the ball pretty well. So, he was able to do a lot of the dribbling drills. He was able to do a lot of the going-off-the-dribble-getting-to-the-basket, ’cause he’s so explosive…[His improved shot] shows he has a willingness and a desire to get better in terms of shooting…I think the thing that we, that impresses me the most is how well they get through a full workout on our court, with our altitude. That impressed me. I thought he was going just as strong at the end as he was at the beginning…With his work ethic, his ceiling can be really high…He’s a very intelligent guy, and I think he is mature for his age. But you gotta remember, he had a brother who’s gone through this league. So, he’s learned through his brother.

I think the video, and tidbits of this interview has already been posted, but Jazz Fanatical had a full transcript, so I thought I'd share.

What I got from the post-workout interview is that he's addicted to Powerade. Dude has to take a sip every 15 seconds!

Seriously, he was very well-spoken and impressive. I have no problem with the Jazz taking either Gordon or Vonleh at #5.

Gordon, Vonleh or Exum. The Jazz are kind of in no man's land sitting at 5.

It's still a 3 player draft, but I personally think that the options for the Jazz in that 2nd tier are a LOT better than we've been giving them credit for.

Clearly my preference is to just take Aaron Gordon and then do what you have to do (coaches, support and roster wise) to help him develop into the best possible version of himself. I think that he's in that 1st Tier group if he develops his offensive game. Simple as that.

I get a little tear in my eye when I see all the people I've helped convert to A-God.

I've been Vonleh and then Gordon for quite some time. Still am, though I see some value to having Gordon instead of Vonleh...if there are no other changes on the team. However, I could see the Jazz taking Vonleh, who IMO would be the BPA, and then using other assets to acquire a FA.

BTW, and this will make Hotttnickkk extremely happy, Vonleh sees himself as a stretch-4 right now, but talks about also playing the 3 eventually.

I like Gordon at the 3 much more than Vonleh. I just don't see NV guarding smaller, faster guys on the perimeter. I can totally see Aaron Gordon in that role, but not Vonleh.

Agreed. Not to say he couldn't do it situationally like Sap, he just isn't built for it full time. Not fast enough, doesn't have the passing, etc.

Yes, I see Gordon as a 3 who could also play against backup 4's. I don't see NV as a 3, at all. I was just funning because kkk likes to turn everyone into a SF.

Vonleh is more of a 5 then he is a 3.

Why would we want him if he isn't going to workout for us?
so if lebron was in this draft but chose not wirkout for us and we found ourselves in a position to draft him then we shouldnt?

take the best player regardless of if he worked out for us or not. if wiggins is there, take him. its a no brainer

Fwiw and not sure if already mentioned, Kawhi was considered a limited shooter in college.
and he got tore up by the jimmer multiple times.

I haven't been reading-- is this seriously a thing? People don't want to draft Exum if he doesn't work out for us??

LMAO. Jazzfanz is hopeless at times.

Yes!! I was wondering the same thing. Is it his tiny head? Something is off.

He measures like Derrick but Derrick just looks normal.

I thought this too. Reminded me of how I thought ANthony Davis's body looked weird as well.

Exactly. Is Jabari Parker going to work out for Utah? Probably not. Joel Embiid? Nope again.

Talent is talent. I'm a firm believer that the private workout is just a SMALL part of the evaluation process. Game tape is the #1 factor that you should always use. Players perform differently when they're not in a competitive game situation. A workout can give you an idea of where they are physically, but can't tell you how they'll perform under pressure. It's difficult to evaluate a player when the talent level around him is crap (like Exum) but it's still better than going off of the personal workout. Watch tape, have your doctors go over their medical stuff, bring them in for a workout and try to interview them (and anybody you can find who's coached or played with/against them.)

Jazz have some of the best scouts in the business. Let them do their job to compile the information and then pull the trigger on the best guy you can get with EVERY SINGLE PICK. Simple as that.
