What's new

After game 1, who wishes we had a draft pick next year?

So now it's better to make the playoffs and not get the #12 pick, get blown out, and then trade away an asset for the #12 pick. Again, we either have the talent necessary or we need draft picks.

I like your idea if we get the pick and a player but doubt anyone is giving up enough value to make it worth considering.

I never said it was better, just what we are left with now. The asset we are trading away is one that probably isn't in the long term plans anyways. If we are ever going to contend it will be because of our young 4, not one of the assets we trade away for a pick.

For the record, I don't feel terribly strongly as to which is better. But the idea that the clear answer is that the Jazz will experience a quantum leap JUST BECAUSE they were in the playoffs seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Maybe, but let's say we get a higher seed next year, like 4th-6th seed. We will likely be in a winnable series at that point ,or at least more winnable than this year. Hayward, Favors, Burks, and Kanter will all know what to expect and be better prepared to win that series. It may be small, but I think getting bounced in 4 games still helps because it shows the players how much harder they have to work to be successful in the playoffs, not just make the playoffs.

I guess Tmac never learned though.

The jazz are a more attractive team for free agents looking to sign. We have our future core. We need good roll players that can defend and score. We can get some good shooters and defenders through freeagentcy. For the most part the good roll players look to sign with good teams not bad ones. Making the playoffs will be very good for making this team better.

There is no reason we can't have the best of both worlds. First, we enjoy the playoffs. Then we pickup one of the 12th-to-14th overall picks from the last ten years that aren't currently on any NBA roster. We'd have our choice of: Mateen Cleaves, Rashad McCants, Al Thornton, Courtney Alexander, Marcus Haislip, Marcus Banks, Sean May, Julian Wright, Etan Thomas, Melvin Ely, Robert Swift, Yaroslav Korolev, Hilton Armstrong...

Of course of all those bust that were named there are also all the guys that were available at 14. Heck even guys in this series..... millsap, tony parker, ginobli are few.
So perhaps not every player available at 14 in the draft is a mateen cleaves type bust.... I could be wrong though, maybe everyone availabel at 14 in nba history was a bust.... that seems to be the thinking of some in this forum.

I think the best news in all this for the Jazz is that Al Jefferson's value has increased since we traded Kosta Koufos and a pick to get him.

I actually wasn't trying to start an arguement. Wow you sure get upset easily.

I was just saying it would be cool to be in the playoffs while also getting the golden state pick.... i guess you disagree.

Sorry I didn't mean to have a go at you - I don't know why but I sometimes turn on that 'Stephen A. Smith' rant mode for some reasons.

Gotto stop doing that.

Yes.

Also the exposure 'may be' improves our chance of attracting a top tiered FA here in the future... 'may be'
