AK - Do we want him back?

AK is sooooooo yesterday ... and this team is about the future. Our "young" team is approaching the half-way point of their rookie contracts and we still haven't figured out what we got. If we sign AK to even a two-year contract, we will have screwed our chances with Kanter and Burks.

Rookies get four-year deals. If we sign kirilenko to three years, he comes off the books just as Burks and Kanter are eligible get their first big deals.

I find it amusing that so many people think Marvin Williams is better than Kirilenko. I'd bet you'd see just the opposite opinion on most atlanta boards. Disappointment plays heavily into our evaluations.

kirilenko has a career PER of 19 and, based on win shares, has added 5-12 wins to the jazz's record every year he's been here (even taking into account the injuries).
williams has a career PER of 14 and has added 3-6 wins per season to the hawks' record each year.

but you're right, it's impossible for people to separate everything else that's peripheral when evaluating.

Those are just statistics. It's not like either PER or win shares take FG%, games played, rebounding, etc. into account.

AK is 31 and has recurrent back spasms. More importantly, it shows up more towards the end of the season when he is needed for playoffs. Does that figure anywhere in PER?

I like AK a lot. A LOT. But he will do better in another situation. He needs a NYK or Laker situation where all they need is a little more D and better ball movement. AK would do wonders for either team.

In Utah I'm afraid it's just time for the young guys to come out. There isn't room for an AK even though I clearly see him fitting well with this squad if it all turns out. It's just too late for AK in Utah. Wish him the best.

I so wish I could neg you right now. You son of a bitch.

not in PER. but it shows up in win shares, and even with injuries factored in AK buys you 5-12 Ws a year. not to mention an almost impossible cocktail of versatile contributions.

the problem with people's evaluation (and consequent valuation) of AK is that, because he's not top-5 in anything, it's almost hard to notice that he's great at everything. in the NBA we pay attention to the best scorers, the best wing defenders, the best passers, the best court vision guys, the best shot blockers. AK isn't in those conversations (although he was at one point for wing defense and blocks), so we look right past the fact that he is one of maybe 2-3 guys in the league who can do ALL those things plus more.

I would like AK in a backup PF/SF role. His best position has always be PF he cannot physically take the punishment for a whole season. Of course this means that Millsap is probably traded.

As much as I am a fan of AK, I don't think I would want to trade Millsap to get him back. However, Big Al would be another story.

YOu could try doing a PER split by month over the season.

If the answer is yes, does that affect your opinion? If the answer is no, does that affect your opinion?

Agree that probably the only way we bring AK in is if we traded Millsap especially with Marvin here now. I would not mind looking at a sign and trade involving Millsap for Ilyasova or Anderson. We have got to be able to shoot from outside to open things up and no the one game against Miami where he hit some 3s does not make Millsap a 3pt shooter.

From Twitter:

Probably best for everyone involved for him to stay in Moscow. Sad thing is that we won't be able to fleece a team by signing and trading. Oh well, we aren't exactly short on young talent anyway.

Excellent. Next year I anticipate the inevitable resurrection of "bring back AK" followed by a discussion of his PER, then followed by talking about how underrated and under appreciated he was, then discuss how he'd take some secondary role and be happy being the 5th option, then be reminded of that one time where he did that one thing where he hit that one shot, then continue to praise his defense, and finally end it off with "at the right price" or "if the price is right" (I'd guess if you ran a search on those phrases you'd get at least 1k hits referencing AK

Infection... what a stupid comment ... "one time where he did that one thing where he hit that one shot" ... I've watched nearly every game that AK played with the Jazz. I can't count how many games he won or saved a game with a key play. Sounds like either you haven't watched that many games or you don't pay very close attention. Maybe you're drunk or smoke too much weed when you do.

Regarding his decision, I have a feeling that he was waiting to see who DWill signed with. If DWill signed with Dallas, I suspect, AK would've gone to the Nets because:

1. They'd have some money to spend on him
2. There probably are still some lingering issues over his time with DWill with the Jazz
3. His second option, the Jazz, didn't make him an offer, or at least enough of an offer to persuade him to return

I saw him on TV today for a few minutes. He didn't do anything exceptional, except I notice the refs gave him the call when he drove and got fouled. That makes a big dif. Also, the announcers said he plays like he has "four arms", which I take it to mean is a good thing, getting deflections, steals , blocks, that sort of thing. .
