Annual Black and Purple Thread

My great aunt worked for the Giants club for decades. Got a custom jersey with our family name when she retired & we have pics of nothing but our name on on the scoreboard (only a half dozen of us adults in the states so no impostors!).

WTS, piss on Giants morning fire truck style.

The NL West ain't no kumbaya campfire.

Where does your abiding love of the Rockies come from, franklin?

This will be a fun year in the NL West. I still remember the '93 season when the Giants won 103 games and MISSED the playoffs (Braves won 104 with no wildcard teams back then). I could easily see the Giants and Dodgers wiinning 100+. Or I could see the Giants win 80. I'm worried about Lincecum; he hasn't looked good in spring training. Last year he should have been dropped from the starting rotation after the first couple of months. If Lincecum continues to get lit up and If Zito regresses, then the Giants will have two guys who should be long relievers instead of 5th starters.

Don't count the Rox in that arms race until they get some pitching.

I started watching the Rockies in between Jazz games back in 2007 on FSN -- helluva year to pick them up. Had our first child that summer who had a terrible stomach and did not sleep. No lie, he slept for maybe six hours a night and took a couple 20 minute naps max. The late night game replays saved my sanity rocking screamo for hours on end.

-----------

Sadly, I enjoy the games more than the Jazz anymore. I'm a genuine homer fan with no real understanding of the sport outside the club, and intend on keeping it that way. There's no championship anxiety or analyzing b.s., just watching to enjoy the product. I even like their announcing crew a lot, even though hardcore fans hate 'em.

Wish I could do the same with the Jazz without getting so damn caught up in this championship despair we all seem to share.

Strangely (because 2 years ago it was the opposite), I worry much more about Timmy than Barry. I had pretty much written Zito off (like every Giants fan) but he was basically solid last year. I'm hoping being a married man has kinda stabilized him. Lincecum tho... dropping from Ace to reliever so quickly, I wonder how much his confidence suffered, and consequently his pitching. Maybe that new hairdo will settle him down.

Yeah, COL could use a lot of help in the pitching dept., but the have some nice players to build on. Tulo is a beast. I like that guy. Rutledge, Fowler, EY... there is some nice talent on that roster.

I have MLB Extra Innings (and actually, it's my wife that orders it - she is a more rabid Giants fan than I am...) and whenever the G's play anyone in the NL West, for some reason we always get the opponent's TV feed. And while I'd obviously prefer the Giants' crew, I actually like the Rockies' announcers. The Dodger guys are pretty good too. The D-Bag's announcers, however, are a completely different story. It's like they know nothing about baseball at all.

Hasn't done much this spring. Timmy has been rocked almost every start. Probably part of the reason the Giants went out and got Gaudin. He's already been told he made the team (weird new rule) and has looked solid. He could very well be the 5th starter by June, with Lincecum moving to the 'pen. What a fall from grace. He's probably kicking himself that he didn't accept that long-term deal for a measly $20M per season. Lincecum might be lucky to be on a major league roster next year. At least the Giants have Cain and Bumgarner. And what a find in Vogelsong! The G's sure can scout pitching!

You like the Rockies' crew? Goodman's okay but I can't stand George Frazier. The Giants crew is great, but nobody touches Vin Scully. Nobody.

I looked at the D'backs' broadcasters and maybe they'll be better this year. If Bob Brenly is full-time, that's good. I think he's solid as an announcer and those select games that Joe Garagiola announces are a gift from the baseball gods. I grew up with Garagiola and Tony Kubek announcing Saturday Game of the Week on NBC, back when it was a weekly event.

Thank goodness you're not a Warriors fan. You're not, are you?

Look at his sig. Replace the Ute logo with BYU and those are my teams. I was never a Warrior fan, although I did follow them a little when I moved to the Bay Area shortly after the W's won their title. Interest and support was still very, very high and then they went through a decade of decline. Have to admit the team was then very entertaining with Don Nelson and "Run TMC."

No argument from me on that one. LA fans have had two of the greatest announcers ever in Hearn and Scully. And Utah had a great one in Hundley before his drinking and senility took over.

Good memories watching those Saturday games as a kid.

No. Wrong side of the bay... But even if SF had a basketball team, I'd still be a Jazz fan.

I think they're better than most. You're right about Vin Scully, though. He's in a league of his own. The only guy even close (IMO) is Giants' radio guy Jon Miller. But I can be watching the Giants just kill the D-Backs but still hate the game because of their announcers. I'd take a team of Bill Walton and Marc Jackson all day long over those guys as sports announcers.

Why don't you like Frazier? I think he's funny. My bball junkie father (got drafted back in his day) loves him, and he's even a Yankees fan. A lot of Rox fans hate him too, just wondering why.

Also, Goodman doesn't have the best voice but his game prep is top notch every single game. I like him for that -- his home run catch phrase is kinda obnoxious.

@bluenote, Chad and Zulu

Which team do you think wins a championship first, Cubs or Jazz?

I'm guessing neither happens before I die.

Frazier's the baseball counterpart to Scott Hastings. An annoying homer.

I could listen to Bill Walton read the phone book and I'd be happy. I ****ing love Bill Walton!

His schtick works so much better in the college game. It's one thing to hyperbole professionals, but to college kids that actually need the hyperbole? It comes off perfectly. He worked the BYU basketball game on Monday and it was classic.
