What's new

Another OC for the Utes...

I'm talking about kids being recruited right now. If I'm a stud offensive player in high school (or even JC), no way I think of this as a positive. 7 offensive coordinators in 7 years doesn't exactly scream consistency and winning.

You know what screams consistency and winning?

Winning.

And Utah isn't round it. So Whitt makes a move that will help the WR, TE and OL positions and people don't like it?

Ummmm...ok?

You're right.

But I don't think you could argue any moves were bad moves at the time. Ok, BJ was a bad move. But I get the logic behind it. They just all turned out badly.

Anyways, I get that people are starting to call for Whitt's head. I don't agree with it, but I get it. I also get this move. I think there are arguments to be made that Chow, BJ were the wrong moves. But this move isn't a bad move.

I don't like this move one bit. Kyle is out the door if he does not win this next year. So I understand him trying. But how is trying to teach a group of young QB's another offensive system going to help that? How is demoting the 2 OC's you had going to help that? Don't you think those guys have just lost a lot of incentive to help him succeed? I just don't get this move from any point of view except Kyle desperately trying to save his job. I don't think it will work because this just brings more confusion to the situation. I think Maybe Hill should just fire him now and hire a replacement while you know your going to have problems next year anyway.

. They just all turned out badly.
.

How can you tell after just one year?
The consensus was that the offense was better last year until the injury bug came. Why not build on that? Now you have to start over yet again.

On the flip side of this: Why would someone take this job? Unless you come in and only lose one or two games, you'll be replaced next year. No thanks.

So who do you get to replace Whit if he gets fired?
A PAC 12 HC job should be a coveted position.

Because he was unemployed and thinks he can come in and do a better job than the guys that were there.

I don't know enough about coaches to guess. But there are lots of options. Lower level coaches that are up and coming like Urban. Coaches that are in smaller conferences and successful that want a shot at the big boys. It would take a search but one could be found.

While I'm critical of the move due to Whit's track record with OC's, I need to clarify one thing: Dave Christiansen is the real freakin deal. Thriller's "He sucked in Wyoming" theory is flawed on many different levels. The only mistake Dave made while at Wyoming, was choosing to take the job in the first place. Seriously, 80% of Big Sky schools have an easier time recruiting. The fact that he actually got Wyoming to a bowl game and semi competitive is a miracle.

The guy is one of the ground floor innovators of the spread/up tempo attack that so many teams run today. The guy is a downright genius and while I will continue to complain about Whit's track record with OC's, one thing you won't hear me say is that Erickson is a better offensive mind.

Green mentioned that maybe there is something between Whit/Erickson that we don't know about. The only benefit of the doubt I can give Whit is that maybe Erickson told him from the beginning that he could give him 2 or 3 more years before riding off into the sunset. Maybe Whit knew that and didn't want to be looking for an OC again possibly as early as next year.

Bottom line is, if it works and Utah is putting up points and going to a bowl next year, the second guessing will stop. However, until that actually happens, I think it's more than fair to second guess Whit.

I think whether you agree with the decision or not, you will agree that Whit's job is on the line if he doesn't have a good 2014. He's gone IMO if it is another bad season.

So much grey area. Very little about this situation is black and white.

I just hope it works out. Something's gotta give.

As far as why would someone want to come to Utah....
1. Historically winning program that has a lot of pride and great alumni/fan support
2. BCS Conference (dare I say the best, or at the very least in the top 2 in the FBS)
3. New top-of-the-line facilities
4. Trending towards total domination in the in-state recruiting war
5. Utah chicks are notoriously hot
6. Built-in Best Friends in UGLI, green, jazzman12, gregbroncs, and myself
7. If recent history is any indication, an almost certain victory over our "rival" in the years we play them (especially as long as Bronco is coaching)
8. Another "rival" that's the bottom feeder in the conference
9. The MUSS

What's not to love?

Lol @ EJ acting like he has any clue what's happening

Because this is such a hard topic to understand? You're the doormat, the bottom rung, the armpit, and the food poisoned, fecal-dripped butt hole of one of the most overrated conferences in all of college football. (Remember when you all thought you were going to win the Rose Bowl?) Your team is just as terrible as anyone who didn't have their heads crammed up their asses always knew, and this unbelievably funny self destruction is the perfect way to round out your perfect season.

And yet we still kick your ***. How's it feel to suck worse than a ****ty PAC-12 football and basketball team? Lol.

Anyone besides me notice that it is always the intellectual whelps er, Ute fans, that can't seem to drop the forever-7th grade-girl talk of "lol"? As I've said time and time again, I am far more of a Utah hater than a BYU fan, so go ahead and keep talking about the team/rivalry/game that you so ardently deny needing on your schedule anymore because you tools sold out and are in a big-boy conference now -- it makes the whole fiasco that much more entertaining.

At least he has the right idea; there isn't much room left at the bottom, you might as well make jokes and try to fool yourselves into believing that you'll ever be anything other than mediocre.

This move definitely surprised me when I heard it on my way home from work Friday. So I have had a mix of all the Ute fan's feelings posted.

To me it all hinges on how BJ and Erickson take this. I can see why Whitt would want to keep both on staff for consistency and especially recruiting, BJ has been able to bring in kids from TX and Erickson's name and connection to Florida can never be a bad thing (rumors were he was bringing in a couple of Florida WR's). I am hoping BJ feels loyal to Whitt for giving him his first job and then giving him promotion and I hope he left him with a message that he hopes to be grooming him for the future OC when he's ready.

As for Erickson I think we all knew it was a 1 to 3 year thing anyway and again who knows what Whitt has told him, I would have a hard time they weren't made aware what was going on well before it happened. The fact that this happened so quickly and quietly (at least no rumors I heard) that any interviews or anything not even that Whitt was looking, is a good thing IMO.

I would comment on the other fan base posting in this U thread but why would I value coaching opinions of a team that called to fire their OC and promote the QB coach to OC and when that happens they then want that new OC to be fired and are thrilled to death that the OC they just fired is now re-hired as the OC again.

Meanwhile the U's coaching staff keeps getting raided by Utah St and Weber St

I will miss playing some teams though as it was the easiest game they scheduled all year.

If you have horrible QBs it doesn't really matter who the OC/team of OCs are.
Utah has been seriously Jinxed at QB since Brian Johnson left. I hope it ends soon. Their next 2 QB's both had to/may have to quit football early due to weird situations. Who's heard of a dislocated shoulder ending a career? Or a weird brain thing discovered because of a concussion and not caused by it?
.
And I don't even believe in Jinx's. Just an extremely bad run of luck right there.
