What's new

Anyone else realize that Demarre is still a free agent?

Not really. Lou Williams, DeShawn Stevenson and Al Horford are the only guys making over $1.4mm who weren't signed this offseason. DeShawn's contract is unguaranteed, and Horford won't just be dumped. I don't see why they'd jettison Lou either.

KOC was a different guy than DOL. KOC made deals to get a guy. DOL gets in on deals to facilitate another team and pick up something along the way. I agree there is no KOC deal for the Jazz with ATL. I will wait to see if there is a DOL deal.

There is probably terms to describe the two different approaches if anyone knows them I would appreciate some education.

Yeah, it's odd. He doesn't show up anywhere on the Hawks website. All the articles seem to be from before the July Moratorium ended. Maybe the Hawks are waiting on a couple other things before finalizing the deal.

He is still listed as available on the Free Agent Tracker link on the NBA.com website.

1. It's not a coincidence the Jazz were consistently good when Carroll was on the court. There's always room for a hyper-competitive energy guy, even if the skills are lacking somewhat. He's obviously not a starter, or even 20+ minute per game player, but he's useful. Changes the game.

2. Hayward is not a slasher. He's been woefully inefficient attacking the basket for his career. His first step and finishing ability are both below average. Dude is an elite off-ball scorer, solid transition and defensive player, and can run some pick and roll in a pinch.
It's no secret that I love you.

I feel like jazz fans like Carroll because he's a high energy guy and that he started a few games.

Kind of underrating Hayward's attacking ability. Yes, his finishing w/ contact leaves something to be desired, but he does do a good job at drawing fouls and getting to the FT line when he does attack. You don't get to the FT line as much as he does by having a below average first step and being "woefully inefficient at attacking the basket".

FWIW, he doesn't score particularly well (relative to league average) in isos or as the pick and roll ball handler, per Synergy Sports.

The prevalence of this mentality is making my visits to these forums less and less frequent.

Would you rather be a perpetual 8 seed that gets its *** kicked in the playoffs? Or possibly land a star that gets the Jazz back to the promised land? Personally I would prefer the second option because losing to the spurs has been old for a long time now.

i always thought he did well with his opportunities in utah. always came ready to play and was a difference maker on the court in what was quite often a very lethargic team last season.

i'm also impressed by his clothing range:

(hey it worked for the ayatollah.)

could be some discounted stock coming up if he doesn't get the #3 in atlanta.

I figured, but there has to be something there in terms of his driving ability.

We'll see if Hayward has actually added a floater. He says so. If he has, and if he can average 7-8 free throws per game, then we will say something else about his ISO and attacking abilities.

Carroll does help with energy when you have non active players on the court like Jefferson, Marvin and Foye. I will even say Millsap was not very active also but I don't blame him after Corbin never ran plays for him.
So in contrast yes. But is he worth 3 million a year for high energy. NO!

Look at the Spurs and Pacers. Everyone can spread the court. They have great defense and great floor spacing. That's why they are successful.
High energy helps but I'm not worried about energy levels after we got rid of the sluggish veterans.

And your missing the point of my post all together. Hayward will be slashing so that is why we need shooters. Doesn't matter what level of slashing ability you think Hayward has. Floor spacing will help Hayward get to the hoop either way.

And also if I remember correctly when Carroll started with our horrible Vets his plus minus went into the negative. We had threads about the Jefferson curse.
I would say the young guys playing with Carroll were more of an impact of his plus minus than anything.

The Pacer's combined 3pt shooting percentage is 35%...............

Unless by everyone you mean George Hill is an OK 3pt shooter.

The Spurs is 38%, which is great. If I had to guess I would say league average is probably around 35%.

**The League median 3pt shooting is 36%***

You would see that hyper-competitiveness fall off after he signs, happens all the time. The odds are the player you would be getting is a 2011 Demarre, a 10 PER player who gets abused on defense by the bigger SFs in the league. This soon to be 28 year old just didn't suddenly get good.

Everyone who played was a threat from the outside. You don't have to even guard Carroll. You have to guard Stephenson, George & Hill from the outside.

And Stephenson was getting better as time went on.

The point is floor spacing. Carroll's man can always sink in

This past year was the 1st season Stephenson has shot over 30% from deep, in the playoffs he shot 28% (so the whole getting better as time went on thing is kind of wrong/ but keep making stuff up). In college he didn't even shoot over 25% from deep. You don't really mind it if he is taking 3's. The Pacer's also bring sharpshooter Sam Young off the bench much like the Jazz used Carroll. And by sharpshooter I mean a terrible 3pt shooter.

The Pacer's are a below average 3pt shooting team, while shooting a league average amount of attempts. It really isn't a huge part of why they were good.

Also, Carroll shot 37% from deep the previous year. It was a small sample, not trying to say he is on that level, but he is better than 28%. I'm about as confident in a Carroll 3 pointer than I am a Stephenson 3 pointer.

He shot 39 percent in January.
Struggled a bit and than shot 35 percent the last month before the playoffs.
Not making stuff up. And my comment was towards this year only. I stated he was getting better as the year went on. He has inconsistency issues because he is young but he was improving.
Guys were not leaving him open any more like they used to.

Playoffs are a whole different game. Defense tightens up. So comparing that is pointless. Stars struggle from the 3 also.

Pacers usually go after guys who have been a threat from 3.
Sam Young came out of college shooting a high percentage from 3.
Gerald Green shot close to 40% the previous year.
DJ Augustine shot above the average for his career.

The point is on defense these guys aren't left open the same way guys like Brewer and Carroll are left open.

Floor spacing is not as good with Carroll on the floor. Not sure how you can deny that.
And the Pacers are going to be much better with Granger back from 3.
And CJ Watson off the bench.
Copeland will help too spread the floor.

Stephenson is a better shooter than Carroll. Not much of course.

Carroll's 3 from last year is way too small of a sample size.

From what I can tell Stevenson's contract is guaranteed this year with a team option next year. So he seems like the only candidate for a sign and trade.

Reasons Atlanta might do it: Oden and Jennings. Can't think of anyone else.

Signing Jennings would make no sense. They matched on Teague and have Schroeder.
