What's new

apologies if this is a previously discussed question, but...

... I was expecting KOC to fill up the rest of the roster with the predictable cheap assets pretty quickly after the Bell signing. Should I take the lack of news as a possible sign that something else is brewing? Or, am I just being impatient and ignorant (I've been traveling a lot this summer so I haven't really had my pulse on the goings-on. So, go easy on me.)

thx.

Just impatient. The rest of the roster IS filled out right now.
Fesenko has a QO, so they work out a contract once he's back from playing with his national team. Gaines and Jeffers both have non-guaranteed deals. Those won't change even after camp opens. You want to keep options open in case you have someone really come in and surprise at TC (a la Matthews). Or, if someone gets cut from another team right before the season starts. And, of course, you have Evans. He's projected to be on the roster, although doing the Junior Jazz assignment seems to be the kiss of death. IMO, he should have been in the weight room and in the buffet line every day, not swatting flies at every podunk town in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.

Deron, Price, Gaines
Bell, CJ, Jeffers
AK, Hayward
Millsap, Okur, Evans
Jefferson, Fesenko

That's 13 players. I think Evans sticks. The Jazz like his potential. But, KOC wouldn't hesitate to replace Jeffers or Gaines if a better option comes along. I wouldn;t be surprised to see O'COnnor sign another big at the expense of Jeffers. You can't count on Memo being ready to go on opening night. If he's not, AK can back up Millsap, but that still leaves the team pretty thin if either of those guys gets dinged. KOC probably looks for another 4/5. Jazz might even go with 14 to start of the season, keeping a guy like Augustine as insurance. Then they could cut him right before contracts become guaranteed for the remainder of the season (and subject to luxury tax). That buys them extra time to make sure Memo is reasonably recovered from his injury.

makes sense. Thanks. I guess I've just been a bit surprised about the lack of news re:Fesenko. I'd been over thinking the issue, no doubt, but I thought that perhaps the reason we hadn't inked him was that we were in the trade market for another big.

At any rate, thanks again for the insight. This was the roster I was expecting anyways.

Plus I dont think you have to have a full roster until later in the season anyway. So why lock yourself into contracts when you could possibly get something better later.

If by full, you mean "15," then the answer is you never have to carry that many. If you mean "13" then that is the minimun at any point in the season - doesn't matter if it is opening night or the last game. Now if you've traded player(s), you have a certain number of days to bring the roster back up to 13, like happened with the Jazz signing Gaines after the Harp/Maynor trade and Jeffers after Brewer went to Memphis. Contracts don't have to be guaranteed though, until January. Matthews played with a non-guaranteed deal to open the season last year.

Yes.

KOC is working on a big 3. Possibly CP3, Amare, and Smello.

It may not work out, since Smello is under contract, and Amare just got 50 million per knee.

Just the same, CP3 will probably still suck In Nawleans, but at least she has earned respect around the league by demanding a trade. No doubt Miami is shakin' in dey boots.

The Al Jefferson thing came out of the blue, I suspect another movement (trade) for a big, but nothing has been even talked about in the media.

Remember KOC said Jefferson had been talked about before the trade deadline, and again at the draft before it happened. No media picked up on that.

I think that he has something else significant lined up. First, the story that the jazz insisted on Minny taking Kofous, he was a cheap big who knew the system and had finally shown signs of life durring the summer league. Second, at Al's press conference KOC was asked about paying the luxary tax again this season and his resposnse was something very vague like 'we're in the line to be in the luxary tax area for now' but he seemed to choose his words carefully. Al was the 9th player on the roster with atleast 4 more to go--absolutley jazz will pay Ltax unless a roster move was made.

But I don't think anything happens untill after Dec 15th when FA's that signed this summer can be traded.

^^^^
Well, KOC is always vague.
I'm not holding my breath, but a deal could be in the works that involved a sign-and-trade with Fesenko, I guess. If a team gives up a big, they'll likely want one back. But we don't have much else to give outside of AK's contract. We've already traded our #1 next season. We traded the Memphis pick. And we gave up a #2 to Chicago.

Jazz have the Harp exception, but who is out there that can be had for $6M? Not a real impact center. And I'm not sure this is the right time to send AK packing. With one rookie wing, and one vet recovering from a hand injury, AK is pretty valuable to have at the 3. And with Memo's return and condition uncertain, Jefferson may be playing full-time at the 5, which means AK would be the likely backup at PF behind Paul.

What we do know is KOC is very tight-lipped. We heard absolutely ZERO about Al even though discussions had been in the works for 6 months. It could very well be that O'Connor has talked abotu various trade scenarios with a few teams and we may not see anything happen until December or near the trade deadline.
