What's new

Are the Jazz going to trade Rudy?

You kind of half to give him what he wants I think. He’s worth about the same in a trade on an expiring deal as he is locked down on a giant contract. And he’s worth nothin if he walks.

Hopefully he settles on something in-between the supermax and max contracts. But hope fades.

We can't supermax Rudy. We simply can't sign a non-supermax quality player to a contract that big.

We wouldn't sign Clarkson to $25 million simply because we had no option to replace him with another big signing. You don't sign a bad contract because you are afraid to lose somebody.

To me, this shows a lot about Rudy. He shouldn't say garbage in the media about wanting to win a title then demand more than he is worth. He can't even be the catalyst to get us to the 2nd round. Take a max and move on.

How much of this hinges on Donovan's opinion of Rudy? If Don isn't endorsing the deal I'm certain that's influencing the negotiations.

Bro, we just signed Don to a 33M-38M deal with a player option, lol. We pretty obviously give out bad contracts if we're afraid to lose somebody.

So at 30M a year you are good but 38M is too much and would cripple the franchise and you’d rather have him walk?

While I’d take it down to the wire or at least past the game tomorrow... I think I’d rather get it done and overpay a little for the certainty. If it costs you JC later or just replacing Joe’s salary with a minimum guy when it expires then that’s more palatable than risking losing him for nothing. You could move him next year or two for stuff if you need to... similar to what the clips did to Blake. CP getting traded for assets tells you teams will take on players if they feel it’s a short cut to relevance.

All star talent is the hardest thing to find... we can replace Bojan Favs or JC with cheaper parts if we need to and we won’t lose as much as just letting Rudy walk.

A penny wise, pound foolish.

We're good at that, though.

We're going to pay him, not the supermax but a LOT He's an epic force in winning and deserves every cent. Without him we're a run of the mill team even with Donovan.

And that's apparently where things are.

Nothing about this seems unrealistic. If I had to make a guess myself, this is where the negotiation is. But I have a hard time believing Porter Larsen (not Andy) is the most wired person in all of media to this situation. Loose sources or making it up likely.

I would be curious if they meant a not full super-max at the same value as a normal max for 5 years or if they they meant a regular max, so just 4 years.

Of course Rudy's agent will ask for the max contract allowed to start out
Why not
He can then work his way down from there

Yeah, there's a lot of detail here that makes the tweet a nothing burger. Of course Rudy's agent will ask for the supermax, they would stupid not to. No reason for them to nudge until the 21st. The details on what "normal" max could mean very different things. 3 vs 5 years...does the contract escalate, stay flat, or descend? If the Jazz are in that in between area, it doesn't really make sense for them to just do a normal 5 year max and call it a day. They would want to structure it in a way that Rudy can have the same money, but front load it or have it be flat.

I'm guessing Rudy is going to get in the neighborhood of 5 years / $190M if he wants a 5th year. Same deal that Paul George just signed.

Its the $45-50 million when he is 32 and 33 years old which is the issue. Do you even read my posts? I'm fine paying Rudy $38 for 2 years. It's the 3 additional years that will cripple us financially.

Rudy Gobert is not a supermax player.

Donovan is 24 and will be going into his prime throughout this deal. He's also a cash cow for marketing off the court.

Rudy wants more money than Don, doesn't create the financial revenue off the court, and will be past his prime for a majority of the deal.

defensive specialists who played subpar after getting paid. hope Rudy wont be in this list

Biyombo 4/72 million Magic
Joakim Noah 4/72 knicks
Whiteside 4/98 heat
Ben Wallace 15m/year Cavs

I fear that for Rudy those negotiations are not about the money but giving him appreciation he thinks he deserves. His reaction to allstar snub was telling, he wants to be recognised and I am afraid it may be more important for him that the financial ability of the franchise to build the team. And if he doesnt see himself getting along with Donovan not getting the supermax may be a good pretext to leave without making a big drama about it.

I agree.

I think Rudy might be the most public "chip on his shoulder" guy I have ever seen. From his number 27 selection to the crying All Star snub. You could even add in the public comments about not getting the ball from teammates, his lack of defensive intensity in stretches recently, his escalating run ins with refs, and his lack of immediate humility in the Don COVID situation.

As Nick Saban says when Alabama plays in big rivalry games - "players will play with more emotion; its just important that they don't get emotional which causes issues completing the task at hand."

If Rudy carries that chip to the lockerroom, in practice, everywhere else, I could understand why teammates get annoyed with him as has been reported.
