A graphic video shows a Baton Rouge police officer shooting and killing Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man who was selling CDs in front of a convenience store, early Tuesday morning.

The video appears to have been shot by a witness to the incident.

The Baton Rouge Police Department has not provided many details on what happened between the officers and Sterling or what caused the officer to pull his firearm, according to The New Orleans Advocate. Investigators are still working to find out what caused the incident to escalate.

WAFB-TV, a local station, reports that Sterling was selling CDs in front of a Triple S Food Mart. According to the station, the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office says Sterling was shot in the chest and back multiple times.

Baton Rouge Police said the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. after officers were called to the scene following reports of a man carrying a gun, threatening others and selling CDs in front of the store.

Following the shooting, one of the officers removed a gun from Sterling’s pocket. But Abdullah Muflahi, the owner and manager of the Triple S Store, told the Advocate that Sterling wasn’t holding a weapon — and his hands weren’t close to his pockets — during the altercation. Louisiana is an open-carry state.

The police department had placed the two officers on administrative leave as of Tuesday evening.

Body cameras worn by the two officers involved fell off during the altercation, but there is footage from a dashboard camera and at least one surveillance camera, Louisiana state Rep. Denise Marcelle told WAFB-TV.

Protesters took to the streets Tuesday night to stand against what they see as another unjustified instance of police violence.

A Total of 558 people have been killed by the police this year according to the Guardian Counter Database: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2015/jun/01/the-counted-police-killings-us-database

Pretty horrible, they clearly had him on the ground.

I'm at least as concerned with the way police use their firearms as I am with how ordinary citizens use them.

Of course I'm a white male, so my concern isn't so much for my own safety.

Yah.. as point blank as point blank gets... like literally man on the ground, gun on the head...

Granted, it's a pretty hostile situation, but still...

Baton Rouge is a **** hole tho.

Is that an advisory statement you believe will change our perspective on what happened?

My nephew is headed there for his mission
Missions should be on these kinds of places more. Try to plant as much as goodness in that soil as possible. Or you end up with people like Cy. Good luck for him.

And remember kids, if you ever use Jazzfanz App, use it safe.

That's a good way to look at it.

What made the police shoot the victim?

Somebody yelled: "He's got a gun".

I saw a video from the take down on. The video looks EXTREMELY damning for the officers.

So let's see if I have this correct. This guy was killed because he was exercising his legal right to carry a firearm? Rich and tragic irony.

I watched the video. There was NO reason to shoot. He was on the ground and subdued. If this policeman is not convicted and does not go to jail, then a horrible mis-justice has occurred. Cue the inevitable *** covering by the BR police and victim blaming by the usual suspects . . . .

Can anyone anymore doubt why black people perceive the policing system is rigged against them?

That's the root of all american gun related death problems. If he had no rights to carry a firearm this all situation would have never happened. Now every ****head has a gun and police is shooting anybody without hesitation because they are afraid of being shot every day they are doing their jobs. Your freedom for guns is rotting, stupid system which should be banished into history's oblivion long time ago.

Having said that the guy who pulled the trigger should never work as policeman again after he hopefully serves some hefty sentence and should have no right to own a gun. Knowing USA this is not going to happen and he will be a danger to society in the future as well. Retired idiot like him killed a guy in movie theatre arguing about texting.

From the video there are two officers on top of him a be his left arm was restrained. This looks like an execution to me.

I don't agree with all anti police hate that happens. Some cases I side with the cops and some I don't.

This is one where I don't. There is in my opinion absolutely a case for murder charges on these officers.

I dont get why people watch these videos. I never want to watch a video of a murder if I dont have to.
