Big Media: why they all sound the same

So we have bitched a bit here but where do you get your news/media? I read Al Jazeera but it doesn't cover the US enough. In that graphic Reddit etc are mentioned but any others? I just want to distance myself a bit from the conglomerates.
 
I hit MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, Washington Post, NYT, Time, Salt Lake Tribune, WSJ, Reuters, BBC...I try to hit as many different sources as possible.

Thanks to giant corporations there's less creativity, and less taking chances. This is killing our music, movies, and ****ing souls.

I feel sorry for our kids. Our parents got the 60s, and some of us had the early 90s. Although the 90s alternative movement was short lived,
it was real, and powerful. I'm glad I got to experience it. I hope someone new comes, and shakes up things. No more (or less sequels), remakes, nickleback, and Maroon 5.

Great rant, and I agree with the 90's being bomb.com, I loved every minute of it. Of my illegally downloaded music that is on my computer - F-U APPLE - I'd wager that 90% of it, roughly 700 songs, is from the mid to late 90's. I loath listening to the radio these days, and have only done it when forced.

If only there were a resource where new bands could put up their new music for free. Someplace they could take all sorts of chances, and if they were good enough, build a following that would allow them to sell their music. Maybe we could call it MeScreen.
 
GE is not liberal....
yes MSNBC is, but MSNBC is a small part of GE,
and frankly , it doesn't look to me like much resources have been put into MSNBC...
Personally , I can't stomach the frivolous talking heads on that station.

right wing radio and tv and print, on the other hand ,
I think has the backing of a lot of billionaires

They all sound the same because they coordinate questions.

On Wednesday, reporters were caught on an open microphone coordinating questions in order to build an anti-Romney narrative with one reporter apparently saying that “no matter who he calls on we’re covered on the one question," the Right Scoop reported. The audio was captured before Romney gave a statement regarding the embassy attacks in Cairo and Libya.

GE has a large amount of money invested in the green technology movement. What better way to convince the populace that we need to utilize green technology en masse than running stories and making movies about dying polar bears, melting ice caps and rising sea levels? All of GE's media outlets help drive business for GE.

GE has a much greater stake stake in the standard technology driving appliances, etc. I don't see them choosing only to focus on the green stuff for a profit motive.

The populace already uses standard technology. You don't need paradigm shift to grow standard technology.

Why don't the two of you open their latest 10k and find out what percentage of revenues & profits comes from which? It was GE Capital pushing the needle prior to the economic collapse but their lending arm was quickly diminished after that.

That's pretty much nonsense. Capitalism makes a habit of reducing margins in the technological sectors to nothing.

GE is a large manufacturer of power generating equipment. Profit margins on HRSG units are higher than turbines, so it pays for them to push for new nat. gas only & no new coal. Too many companies can compete with the relatively technologically simple turbines. I've even seen them turn their backs on the older installations because it's not worth their time to provide parts & repair services.

The locomotive sector is driven by efficiency advancements. The market is too competitive to make much over cost on a standard locomotive so companies have to innovate to turn a profit. It's a similar story in aviation where they have to provide incentives for companies to upgrade aging fleets instead of maintaining them. Increasing efficiency drives sales. I haven't seen a need for government intervention here though. Plenty of demand.

--Their battery plant is not competing with their old technologies. Requires government regulations.
--New refrigerators don't compete with the old ones as regulations push competitors out of business. Requires government regulations & subsidies.
--Drilling technologies increasing efficiencies drive sales & increase market share.
--The windmill segment is pretty much useless without government subsidies. Requires government regulations & subsidies.
--Low competition for LED lighting vs. traditional. Requires government regulations & subsidies.
