Look, most Montanans weren't crazy about Trump, they just hated Hillary. But using your logic, Gianforte should have beaten the Democrat Governor he ran against, right?

People here didn't even like Gianforte that much. He won because he was running against a guy who had been a career long mediocre musician whose recent accomplishments include not paying his taxes, stiffing his contractor, and falsely reporting his income. But yeah, Gianforte won because of Trump.

Fwiw, Gianforte has given millions to schools/universities, apologized to the state, his supporters, the reporter he hit and the reporters who saw it, for his physical outburst. And tbh, if I was him, I might've done the same thing. When a reporter trespasses, repeatedly asks the same questions ignoring your responses that you'll get to him if he waits, while he shoves his phone in your face...yeah, I'd deck the guy. It was completely the wrong decision, but I freaking get it.

Trump won the Montana primary by a landslide, maybe more than any other state.
 
Realistically this reporter, like many others - too many, had one aim in mind: generate a buzz-worthy "controversial" moment. I do not believe for a second that the reporter really expected an answer to the inflammatory questions he was asking. They know that they are never going to find a republican that will say (or a democrat about a demo pres) "yep that Trump is a major-league *******, what a douche, he should be impeached RIGHT NOW". Of course the reporter wanted an outburst, why else would he have hounded the guy. What else comes as a result of hounding like that? Nothing but outbursts. Poke the bubble enough and it will burst and that was exactly what he wanted. And that is what he got, so it was a success in his eyes. He got his name spread around nationally where he probably struggled to maintain a decent byline where he was. Attention was the goal and attention was what he got.

I understand that.

Like I've mentioned already, Montana is pretty unique when it comes to politics. They will almost always vote Republican for president, but when it comes to the state politics, it's pretty even. We've had split Senators for decades, Democrats for governor for probably the past 10+ years. There are a lot of people who vote republican for president and democrat for governor. That's why I think the idea that Gianforte won bc of Trump is a highly faulty idea, especially when you consider the guy lost the governor race.

Trump won Montana by 20 percentage pointo, and I imagine if there had been no Mail in ballots, a closer result would be the case, but I seriously doubt this election reflects a referendum on hatred of the media. I doubt the event had much of an impact at all, even with Montana newspapers withdrawing endorsements of the GOP candidate. Sorry state of affairs....

Holy cow this is a bad take. The reporter asked Gianforte about the GOP Healthcare bill now that there was a CBO score. Gianforte had avoided taking a position on it by saying he was waiting for the CBO score to come out.

That's hardly a "gotcha" question. That's a reporter doing his job. Asking a person who is running for public office for an opinion on a bill that if passed will have dramatic impact on every American is inflammatory now?

It's incredibly disturbing to me to see people justifying Gianfortes actions becuase he was being hounded by a reporter. That comes with the territory when you run for public office.

Haha yeah sure. A really good guy huh? I guess that's why his campaign blamed the reporter for the altercation, which was quickly debunked by Fox news reporters who were at the scene.

Oh but he apologized...


... after he had already won. That "apology" is ****ing worthless.

It's incredibly sad to me to see the GOP leadership fail to call this guy out in any way for what he did. Once upon a time the Republican party stood for things like integrity and responsibility. I guess those days are long past.

the reporter has his 1st amendment. but the first amendment doenst mean he could tresspass technically he was trespassing. so he could have been shot(or not don't know montana law or if montana has last castle law)

but fact remains he was trespassing! Montana ain't europe when someone trespasses and you land in jail for defending your property against trespasser

Do you know the guy? Because I do. I'm not going to let one incident change what I've seen over the years. Knowing him the way I do, his apology was sincere, and he meant it. He regrets it.

But it doesn't matter how or when he apologized. You would have found something you didn't like. That's how these things go.

Ok so if it was sincere why did he blame the reporter after it happened? Smells like cowardice in the name of political expediency to me.

The fact that he waited until the election was wrapped up to come clean about what happened tells me all I need to know about him, opinion of random Internet person who claims to know him notwithstanding.

That's excellent logic. You have to do something horrible more than once, else it doesn't count. I mean, how many people would he have to assault before you say "Hey, he might be kind of an *******?"

There are reports of him intimidating other reporters too. I don't know how it is out of character.

I think using the word "house" makes your scenario apples to oranges.

They were at his house tho? His personal property. He was in a room meeting with other reporters giving them a private interview and this guy barges in. I'm not defending his actions. It was beyond stupid, and wrong...but at the same time I understand it.
 
For that matter, I know some of you have been in fights, whether with siblings or strangers.

If a guy is hitting on you, how likely are you to give a play by play of what's happening? We all know this "journalist" was instigating things. That doesn't justify Gianforte's actions at all, but it sure would be nice if members of the media held themselves to the same standards they hold everybody else too.
