Burks at #12

What were Burks' combine measurements? He looks shorter than 6-6 in those highlight videos. Looks more like 6-3 6-4.

I totally agree but his measurements were solid. 6'5" without shoes. A 6'10" wingspan. An 8'7.5" standing reach. His max vert reach was also 11'7.5" which is VERY good for a guard.
In comparison, Hayward was 1.75 inches taller but had a shorter wingpsan, standing reach and max vert reach.

I loved Burks at #12. I was intrigued by Hamilton, but didn't flinch when we got to #12 and yelled, "Burks!".

Thanks. Those are some legit numbers. Just needs to put on 20-30 lbs in the next 3-4 years. For comparison's sake D Wade is 6'4" 220.

Didn't they say as Mirotic was being drafted that he would not be coming to the NBA for at least 4 years? Why would you want to draft him now and wait that long?

Because he's a bonafide lottery guy, top 5 or 6 without the contract issues. Hopefully Burks can contribute right away. But odds are it will take him a year or two before he can. So the 'waiting' period for a guy who is guaranteed to step in and play right away doesn't bother me. But don't get me wrong, I'm down with Burks. I'm really looking forward to seeing him play.

Sure he can, problem is getting open in the NBA. Remember how many clean looks Korver got a game? 1 or 2 at most. And that's when we had the best PG in the league....
Korver got 1 or 2? No, he got WAY more. Remember the criticism is that he passed up a lot of open looks to protect his record. Burks has the ability to drive; Korver did not. I think the comparisons to Brewer might be close, in terms of Brewer was also a SG with good ball-handling skills. And Brewer was great at getting to the rim. However, Brewer had NO mid-range game. And he wasn't going to develop one due to the way the ball came of his hands when he shot. Burks has a much higher ceiling. Jazz can run that "Harpring" curl all day with Hayward and Burks. And both guys can drive and dish.

I probably would have liked to see a SF picked as that is still a position of dire need. Hayward is the only SF signed right now...and I hope the plan is to have him be the starting SG with Burks backing him up. I doubt AK is re-signed, so CJ either has his option picked up, or the Jazz trade for a SF or sign one as a FA.

Also saw that Jacob Pullen wasn't drafted. This kid from K-State is a stud at the point. I hope he gets a Jazz invite, though I'm sure others will be calling him today as well.

Don't mean to get too far off topic but I like Pullen. I like Hansbrough too.

Holy ****, that's good. Didn't realize he had that length. If he adds some weight, he could potentially guard 1-3.

Watched a few vids of the kid, and he has a pretty solid mid-range jimmy. His freshman campaign, he his 35% from behind the arc (19-54), and 80% FT%. He's gotta have something to his stroke.

All in all, I'm very happy with him and hope he has a long and tasty career with the Jazz. All-star? Probably not. Starter on a 50 win team? Probably.

Also, to all the clowns who are on the "Hayward is only a SG, he creates mismatches blahb blah blahl" train, Burks has a higher standing reach, so he will create the same mismatch, if not more because he is quicker and faster, at the SG too.

This.

But I do want AK signed now more than before. I think having him on the team as an "old veteran" who is an excellent wing in the Jazz offense, will be helpful during the next few years as these kids grow up. One of the most important things now is for these youngsters to buy in to the system. We need to keep AK, CJ, Milsap and Watson around to keep the culture in place. We are not going to win any titles in the next couple of years so put to good use the veterans who are UTAH JAZZ veterans. This will keep the place glued together a bit more. This all assumes these guys are good locker room guys and have a 'bought into the system' aspect to them.

And while I was/am generally an advocate of Jerry "playing veterans mostly" it is becuase of the purpose of that action: get to the playoffs, maximize winning later in season and particularly in the playoffs. NOW, there is a different objective: Grow your new future. And so the veterans should become interspersed pieces to keep a level of organizational sanity and order on and off the court. So what if we don't go to the playoffs next year. Grow the new guys.

Wow, just read through the comments on the D-News and SLTrib on the Burks pick. I had to LOL at all the hate there because we didn't trade up to get Jimmer. The Jazz got a better player at 2 picks lower in the draft and they are saying that they well never watch the Jazz again. Amazing.

Surprised that Kawhi Leonard dropped so far; If he didn't cancel his workout with the Jazz maybe they would have taken him at 12.

Surprised that Utah picks Burks, who in his post workout interview, didn't even know the name of Utah's head coach.

Seriously...??? Who doesn't know Jerry Sloan is the coach of the Jazz?

1. They're full of ****.
2. I hope they aren't.

I must admit we need a lights out 3 point shooter, Jimmer would have made me very excited about next season.

Business is business, hopefully Burks really turns out.
