Burks

28 free throw attempts so far.

Good for 128th in the league. Doesn't sound so impressive but in just 12 minutes a night, I'm pretty stoked. Equated into starter's minutes of say 30 minutes a night, he'd be in the top 16 in the league in total free throw attempts.

I see this as a huge plus. The guy has balls, attacks the rim, and is already getting calls as a rookie. This is something the stud wings in the league do. He needs to hit his free throws a little more, better play within the framework of the offense and also work on his outside shot but I'm liking what I see from the kid.

I agree. He just looks so fearless out there. He can be that aggressive attacking wing the Jazz have to balance Hayward who is much more conservative.

To me he is most exciting Jazz rookie to watch since AK's rookie year. Kid is oozing talent. I wanted Leonard with 12th pick but looks like O'Connor hit jackpot with this one.

KOC really deserves credit for sniffing this kid out. Obviously, it wasn't that hard...Burks being a Buff and all, but still. He really flew under a lot of people's radar around draft day and he has a big upside if he can get some minutes. I like what I've seen thus far. He has a pretty solid all around game, even if he has missed some from the stripe. Rome wasn't built in a day. But he's got a bright future.

Another thing that I like with Burks is his defense. He is ranked at 16th in the league (by far the best on the team) by sheer statistics by MySynergySports.com with 42 defensive plays (limited but impressive). Rajon Rondo is ranked 34th with 146 plays for example (Luol Deng 45th; 176 etc.). Some of his earlier plays were not that good, but he has come on strong. If he learns how to use his body a bit more like Raja, he could be elite. We'll know more when he plays against elite players as well.

I know I'm alone on the island, but I'm not ready to jump on the Burks Bandwagon. His ability to get to the foul line is noteworthy, and I like that he rebounds but the reason he gets so many chances at the line is that the dude never passes, (averages less than 1 assist in those 12 mins) The other reason is that he frequently drives to the hoop widely out of control.

If he shows that he can play with teammates I'll come off my island, when he shows he can play with the 1st team against 1st team opponents then I'll drink the punch. Until then I will continue to wonder about what could have been if the Jazz would have drafted Kawhi Leonard so that the Jazz could play pg, hayward, Leonard, Milsap, Jefferson.

He has the ability to pass and get assists. (See 6 assist game against Milwuakee). Now he needs to make that ability a routine part of his game. Not be a Hayward pass first player but learn to combine the two.

For a rookie, he looks fantastic.

Hayward should take some notes.

why he should take some notes? it is his game style, he goes to the rim thats what he does best. Hayward is a very good passer and all around player, he cant be a penetrator like Burks, and burks cant be like him

It was a tongue in cheek comment. I wasn't comparing Hayward to Burks. No need to be so serious.

Burks is never going to get real heavy minutes until he plays within the offense. He has a lot of great tools, it'll be fun to watch this kid grow into his role. Good thing he's on a team that's buying in, it should really speed the process.

I think Burks can become the next Corey Maggette...or he could turn into Morris Almond. Perhaps the problem is he just doesn't get a lot of PT, and what he does receive is inconsistent. So when he steps on the court, he feels the need to impress - and most rookies think they do that by scoring a ton of points. I'll give him a free pass this season. At least he's shown the courage to drive and shoot. Let's see if next year, hopefully with more consistent minutes (CJ likely gone), Burks can settle down and pass a lot more.

Yes, if you're watching highlights than the actual game .. as a whole.

During Millsap's rookie year he had a game with 20 points, 17 boards, 4 blocks, 4 steals, 3 assists. How does he get overlooked or underated so much? Burks is good and all, but he's not as exciting as Millsap was.

I was referring to the casual fan. Most fans (fanz) don't remember well, nor watch the details of a game .. more casual bb fans that look for the big plays. Anyone that's played ball knows this. Which means you do. Just trying to state how much that can be done that doesn't show up in the boxscore. Most fans (fanz) tend to make their assumptions from the most RECENT boxscore. Truth.

Is Burks more exciting than Matthews?

Per my earlier post; who are you asking? what's the criteria?

Personally, I find neither exciting. If honest, I like the Matthews brand more appealing from a consistency standpoint. Burks certainly shows potential, for sure, but Matthews shows a steadiness. Burks may get there.

I would also say Burks has more upside, but push come to shove, I trade him for Matthews. Now the neg-reps come.
