What's new

Burks

He was measured at 6'5'' w/o shoes, and 6'6'' with shoes. He's a legit 6'6'', it seems (and has a higher standing reach than Gordo).

Also has a 6' 10" wingspan (that obviously feeds into standing reach, still worth noting, IMO).

How so? As in, what exactly DOES Burks bring to the table that Brooks doesn't, and if there's anything, does that offset what Brooks does better than Burks (almost everything to this point, apparently)?

Right now the only thing Burks is better at than Brooks is that he is 2.5 years younger.

Burks just oozes talent. I have no doubt he'll be an elite driver in the league. Not very confident in his jumpshot, though. It's real flat. Like he flicks it. But it will be fun watching his development.

Only because we know he can drive and get to the line does this make me happy, but it was refreshing to see him drain those two long jumpers in the first half tonight.

I like Burks a lot. He is way ahead where Hayward was last year at this time.

I also like the competition amongst Hayward/Miles/Burks for minutes. Competition is good. I

Burks was easily the worst defender on either team tonight. Kid has a whole ****load to go there. I mean... he kept guarding players 5 feet beyond the 3 point line for Christ's sake. And that's saying nothing of regularly losing his man off the ball and not fighting through screens (besides that he goes over when he should go under almost every ****ing time).

I totally agree about his defense and not only today, it really concerns me everytime i see him play. So much of talent, such a good ability to score shouldnt be spoiled with a bad defense like this. He should somehow learn how to not lose his man so quickly. Otherwise he will always be a talented bench guy whom you cant rely on to give major mins because of defensive liability.

My ideal perimeter player should be a mixture of Burks' offense and Paul George's defense

I have to disagree with you here. After last night's game Burks is ranked 29 in the entire NBA according to Synergy. He played great defense on J. Kidd. Your comments seem to be made in anger (made at 3:25 AM) for the Jazz's loss rather than in light of every one of his games. Burks made plenty of mistakes against the Mavs and has a lot to learn, but find me anyone who has a better Synergy defensive ranking at this time among Rookies or Sophomores. Every guard gets buried in picks from time to time (Hayward still all the time). I'm also confused about your critique about him picking up his man 5' beyond the three point line (too early or late?). According to Synergy, players score against him at a 29.2% rate. Compare Devin Harris 43.4% and Chris Paul 33.9%. He's got a lot to learn but is far from the defensive train-wreck you make him out to be.

Slow down. I said he was the worst defender last night. And he usually makes similar mistakes game in and game out. He's also usually guarding scrubs. Beaubois went off last night because Burks had no clue what he was doing out there.

Causation is almost always over simplified.

Burks looks like he is trying to be Raja out there defensively with the way he attempts to play press defense. I like that he is trying, but he does get BURIED on picks. He will have to learn how to properly fight through picks, or start going under because he is taken out of the play completely 9/10 times. Like Numberica said his off ball defensive awareness needs a lot of work too. Right now he makes a lot of positive plays, but also makes nearly the same amount of negative ones.

Burks' D is what you see from a lot of rookies. He's used to playing against players where he can make up for lapses with just his athleticism. He's used to playing teams that don't run offenses with so many hard cuts and screens. And of course it's all happening at a speed he never knew basketball could be played at. He's trying out there which is enough for now. More importantly, he can actually make plays on the other end which is something another guard we have cannot do at all.

I said this in the chat last night, but here it is again:

Burks was getting buried on screens and it was causing big problems on D. But, this is exactly the kind of thing that he needs to work out ON THE COURT. He's the only young'un that is showing me much lately. If he can work out his defensive kinks, then he'll be ready for more serious burn.

Agree. Also made an egregious error late in the 4th - he was on the strongside but still got caught ball-watching and let Beaubois cut to the basket for a wide-open layup that put Dallas up 4 with 4 minutes left.

I think this kid will be a player for us and has a very good chance of becoming a solid defender because he's so aggressive. It's not that he doesn't want to play defense - it's just that he has no clue how to at the NBA level. All part of the learning process, but it wouldn't be terrible for Ty to send a message that he needs to improve his defense if he wants to see more minutes.

Putting in effort is more than half the battle and Burks doesn't look lazy out there.

vslice and billyshelby, I agree.
