What's new

BYU Football 2012

I'd like to see Nelson run less... More Foote.... More Williams... And to actually finish drives off at the end. Gotta turn those FGs into TDs if we hope to take down some of these teams like Boise or Utah.

I also hope that the subbing for Hill is kept minimal. I have never been a fan of taking out the starter right before he finishes off drives in the blue zone...
If we can't figure out how to do this, it's going to be a long season. I kept thinking to myself that we hadn't scored a TD in the second half.

they should've had at least two TD's that were brought back on holds.
Yes, but both of those drives were practically given to them by our stupid personal foul calls. Gotta cut those out (all though some of them were very weak).
Van Noy is a stud. Our secondary was amazingly good.

Yes, on both counts.

I would have also like to see that Hill kid get to pass more than once. If you're going to put him in, let him show what he can do. That TD pass he threw was absolutely beautiful.

As a Coug fan, I'm loving the stomping we just put down, but I bet I'm not alone when I say... damn, we're not very good. Sure, we beat a lowly crap-tastic team tonight, but even then, Nelson should have had two picks, and they should've had at least two TD's that were brought back on holds. Van Noy is a stud. Our secondary was amazingly good. That's about it.

I agree with this. Nelson doesn't throw the ball he floats the ball. A team with good speed and athleticism on the defensive end would have really hurt BYU last night.

Finishing drives is critical. Luckily for BYU they played a team that is still trying to find their way. They also have that luxury next week. Hopefully this week and next week can work out all of the bugs and be ready for the game in SLC. I would love to just see what UGLI has to say after BYU beats the Utes.

Phew, good thing I didn't do this!!!

I know, then you wouldn't be able to afford to go halfsies with me on Insider.

I will admit, I'm genuinely shocked that byu beat down Wash St. I didn't really watch any of the game, hopefully it was just a fluke.

As far as the two td's that wsu should have had that were brought back on holds...... There were holds on those plays so that is the reason that they would have got the td's. If there were no holds then byu gets to the qb and the passes never get completed, so to me saying "they should've had at least two td's" is incorrect.

Im still worried about nelsons weak throws, but remember that he didn't even have his go to guy for 90 percent of this game (hoffman) and we missed an easy field goal and if we are talking about "should haves", then we should have scored more td's (especially if hoffman was in the game) instead of field goals when we were inside the 10. The refs were also biased towards wsu (that personal foul on hadley after makeing a tackle was B.S.) byu was called for twice as many penalties and were at home.

This game could have easily been 50 to 6.

damn, we're not very good.

We're not very good? WSU had 224/yards and 6 points. Call me when somebody else holds them below that this year. Won't happen. BYU was in the red zone all night on offense too despite the fact that Cody Hoffman was out early. You shouldn't be anything but optimistic at this point.

I'll tell who's not very good, Pac 12 refs. Please leave those amateurs home in the future. Personal fall penalties for brushing arms? Get out here with that stuff. I guess they aren't accustomed to physical football.

Wow Pac-12, what a nice showing....

Maybe WSU shouldn't have fired their last coach? Cuz Leach's offense looked like crap tonight.

BYU was dominate. I love the new athleticism and muscle on offense and defense. Bronco's stunting and blitzes are so much better than what Hill ever did (all Hill did was play base defense it seemed).
Bronco runs three defenses. Base, max drop, and man-blitz. By far the most effective was max drop (rush 3). They kind of spied with Van Noy. He just kind of lines up wherever and does whatever I guess. Anyway, max drop was pretty much their defense most of the game. Got picked apart a little at the start but fine after that.

It's a good start. Chippy play is to be expected. I'd rather try to calm players down than try to light a fire under them.

I thought the playcalling was a little too fancy. Same with the blocking schemes. But it seemed to work and threw off WSU for the most part so fine.

Everyone looked good on both sides except kickoff and Nelson was kind of weird. He usually is at his best ad-libbing. But he looked great when he stayed in the pocket. Threw a good ball. But he looked terrible on the run. I like competitive players but he needs to learn when to give up on the play and throw it away. Just some horrible decision-making but it seems with him that's how he lives. Havings said that it was clear his ad-libbing was at the top of the list of WSU's gameplan. Credit them for getting guys to him and controlling the pocket.

This year looks good and the future looks good (Hill, Williams). But what else is new.

Refs sucked. Terrible calls both ways.

I don't like that either, especially when your normal quarterback can already run. The thing is, Hill can play running back too though because he runs like one, and BYU has that Kuresa kid that lit up Utah high school football playing QB at WR right now. I think they should focus more on "trick" plays in that context and use those guys to throw off a pitch or something, rather than having Taysom in the Wildcat formation.

I agree, if you play Hill, let him pass. Don't just use him as a RB. That TD pass he had on the run was fantastic.

In fact, I don't know why you'd use him as a RB... Williams, Alisa, and Foote all looked fine to me. I'd like to see more Williams. He looked to have a lil "burst" that we haven't had for a while.

I really didn't like the red zone offense now that I think of it. What the hell was Doman thinking? Our greatest strengths right now is the receiving talent. If I'm some of those big receivers, I'm a lil pissed at the playcalling in the red zone. Lob it up to Apo (since Hoffman was injured) or the TEs. Or, probably the most effective, run a bootleg. Give Nelson a run/pass option. This should be devastating as defenses will have to honor Nelson's running ability. Should find some easy wide open receivers. I mean, just look at how wide open TWO of our WRs/TEs were with Hill's first TD pass on that run/pass option.

I understand it's a first game... But that doesn't really excuse crappy red zone playcalling, right? Can't settle for FGs....

These are all excellent points, and I have to agree. I guess I just forgot that it's the first game of the year, and we're not going to be 100%.

I don't have any political contributions to make this year so the money in my pocket will be good.

Oh wow, it's going to be double sweet.

People don't forget, Wash St. had no problem scoring last year. Didn't they average over 30 points last year? Wilson is a 1000+ yard receiver, right?

Leach was supposed to only help them to score. Their QB was back and healthy. If anything, this was supposed to be a shootout.

BYU's defensive performance last night was impressive. Even Ute homers have to admit to this. Or concede that their conference is dump on fire.

I loved how we stunted and blitzed, changed things up, so refreshing... And the closing speed BYU had. Once a pass was completed, they made sure that Wash St. wasn't gonna get anything after the catch. In many cases, not only did they prevent yards gained after the catch but punished the receiver for catching the ball. Good physical defense

That BYU pass rush is good. Very good. If I'm Wynn my shoulder is hurting already.... Can't wait to knock him out in a few weeks. Van Noy is going to break you

Overall, there were certainly a lot of bright spots but I agree. That was one of the things that concerned me the most.

Other things that concerned me besides being able to punch it in when getting to the red zone* are: the dumb penalties (yes, the refs were pretty bad but even so there were way too many penalties) and too many runs for 0 yards (by both RBs and QB).

Too bad it's hard to know if the domination was because BYU is going to be really good, or WSU is going to be really bad.

*I think calling it the blue zone is just stupid.

I agree with all of this. Some of the hand offs were bad.

I'm also not sure if we really know much about BYU. I don't think that next week will shed any light on it either. Until after week 3 we might not know how good or bad BYU really is.
