BYU Football 2012

Love this Leach quote on Riley Nelson:

"Am I impressed with his ability to run? No. Am I impressed with his ability to throw? Not really. But the most important thing," the always-candid Leach said, was Nelson's ability to be a leader in the 30-6 BYU win that was the season opener for both teams and Leach's debut for WSU on Thursday.

"You can see they draw a lot of confidence from him," the BYU alumnus said. "He's a tough, gritty guy."

Missed the game. It was on the euro version of ESPN in the middle of the night here.
Good to see BYU whipped some *** though!

Overall, there were certainly a lot of bright spots but I agree. That was one of the things that concerned me the most.

Other things that concerned me besides being able to punch it in when getting to the red zone* are: the dumb penalties (yes, the refs were pretty bad but even so there were way too many penalties) and too many runs for 0 yards (by both RBs and QB).

Too bad it's hard to know if the domination was because BYU is going to be really good, or WSU is going to be really bad.

*I think calling it the blue zone is just stupid.

LOL

I agree, one of the lamest things I've ever seen at the stadium. That's why I had it in bold in my post.

It was a good game one of the season. There was rust at times, and they looked great at times.
Most of all I liked the defense. They did not allow much in the way of YAC, and they got good pressure on Tuel, or Tool or whatever the QB's name was.
Riley looked good on his throws over the middle when in the pocket, his scramble throws are iffy, and his down the field throws are frisbees.
The running backs looked good, believe it or not I was most impressed with Foote, he seemed to move well bounce off tackles at times and push through for the extra yards.
Like others have said, some of the running play calls, and calls in general were not good.
Also, as was mentioned, the refs were terrible. They called celebration and personal fouls in excess. I could see those calls on a couple plays, but not nearly as many as they called.

I'm worried about defenses that can catch those lame ducks Riley throws up there.

Good game, it tells us a little, but not much. Wash St was out of sync, and did not play well.

I really don't like it when they go double TE and/or run out of the I-Formation. It's just too predictable and there never seem to be enough room for a big back like Alisa to operate in. I'm thinking that most of those running plays stopped at the line of scrimmage were out of the I...

Good point. A team with corners that have good closing speed could cause problems. One good thing, though, is that our receivers are pretty good sized, so they can usually win the "jump balls".

Oh, one more thing--I really liked the option. They used it a bit too much over the course of the game, but especially at the start of the game it was really effective.

BYU looked pretty good last night. Defense was pretty solid. I still dont think Rileys is as good of a passer as his stats showed last night, he easily could have had 1-2 picks. I guarantee you he will throw atleast one or two against Utah.

Agreed. It was beyond refreshing to see something other than 3 yard screen passes on 2nd and 3rd downs when we needed 10. At the very worst, our future looks disgustingly bright. At the very best? 16-0, like I predicted before the season.

Foote impressed the hell out of me. And the TE that caught the two TD passes. Where the hell has he been?

Foote was nice and so was the TEs who are now getting healthy but Ridley was the biggest surprise to me.

You may want to focus on beating Wazzu in week 1 before making that proclimation. All trash talking aside, I think they will be causing teams problems this year. Mike Leach is the mad hatter of college football and he's actually inheriting a team with some really nice offensive weapons. They've got some really nice WR's on that roster and a couple of good QB's. Add to that the fact that Mendenhall teams seem to start off slow each season and I think BYU could find themselves in a dog fight week 1.

Both BYU and Utah are lucky they're both getting this team on their home fields. I think Wazzu has a few upsets in them this year.

Umm, yeah, that was a rough one...

Swing and a miss.

However, I agree w/you. I could see Washington St. going on the road and upsetting somebody on Nov 3...

I'm going Oklahoma/Utep U 62.5 for my bet this week for real though. I'm just going to play one a week for fun and see what happens.

Just call me Ben Bernanke from now on because all I ever do is print money. They only combined for 31. College football betting is too easy.

Yeah, he was a nice surprise. Got hammered on a few of those throws and still hung on. Had nice field presence. Didn't look scared. If you can't have an elite level athlete at WR, the next best thing is somebody that can run crisp routes and catch everything. He appears to be at least that. I'm curious to see him get a few balls in the open field so we can see if he has any speed/shiftiness to him. Let's hope he can keep it up.

I obviously overestimated Mike Leach. That team has a ways to go. It seriously looked like theg had no spring or fall practices. Props to BYU, they looked much better than I thought they would. Two weeks from now @ RES is going to be very interesting. I think its a lock that BYU can improve on last years 44 point loss.

Concentrate on Utah St. little brother. You folks need to survive that game first.... Or risk being blown out. If Wynn's 2012 season isn't over this week, it surely will be in a few weeks. Van Noy is going to break a few quarterbacks this year.

You've got me on all counts. If Utah goes up to Logan with the wrong mindset, it will result in a big, fat, "L". I'll leave the predictions to you. Im not very fond of predicting season ending injuries for opposing players.

Stay classy big bro.
